Likely a combo of great genes and taking care of himself. I remember stories of Steve hanging out with the Laurel Canyon musicians of the late '60s-early '70s, and he was one of the few who did not take drugs.
@makeadifference4all
@makeadifference4all 9 месяцев назад
@@markb20 Agreed: he's always been at a healthy weight and, from what I read years ago, exercised regularly. Plus, he's stayed creative with comedy, music, and writing, which is great for the brain. I hope I age half as well!

@@makeadifference4all Yes, and as you said, Steve was always an intelligent guy. He grew up mainly in the '60s and rocketed to fame in the '70s when drugs and alcohol were everywhere. He was smart and disciplined enough to avoid those wasteful situations.

I was in high school early seventies the first time I saw Steve Martin do standup on Carson. I had never seen anything like him, he was doing this absurdist, non-sequitur style humor that I loved and was totally unique. Anyway, one of the 'jokes" he told was "I like to give my cat a bath, but the hair gets all over my tongue". Then, he puts his famous arrow through his head, pulls his mouth wide open and before he starts jumping up and down, blurts out "here's something you don't often see!". Well then, there you go, a birth of a legend. And I have an inkling that "cat" joke might have been the reason that old lady he met said "yuk".
@charlie-obrien
@charlie-obrien 9 месяцев назад
Steve's comedy has been so expertly refined over the years and that's why he is still on top. He left the white suit and the arrow behind in the 80's and began making movies that were the top comedies (and even some dramas), now he is back on TV with "Only Murders...." and the best nightclub stage act since the Rat Pack, which he does with Marty. All through this time he has been a musician, an art collector and connoisseur, a writer, a playwright and basically the renaissance man of our time.
@jaykay6387

Never could have predicted way back then how successful and varied his career would be. I was just happy that here was this new, edgy standup comedian that wasn't doing warmed over borscht belt schtick or pained political satire. He ushered in the "modern" comedy that was adopted, transformed and curated by Letterman and is still in fashion today by disciples like Conan & Kimmel. I remember telling everybody I knew you gotta' see this Steven Martin guy before anybody had heard of him, so I'm going to take a little bit of credit!

I must say (nod to Ed Grimley), that I fell in love with Steve Martin's zany (see Happy feet) early comedy and then over the years read his books and watched as his movies evolved and now I am in awe of his acerbic wit and perfect timing. It is simply unparalleled in show business. I was also reminded, while watching this clip that I should never be drinking coffee while watching Steve tell a story.

@geraldframinghammer2626
@geraldframinghammer2626 9 месяцев назад
@@daveclark8337Conan didn't spend most of his time on basic cable. He spent 17 years hosting a talk show on NBC, and after the Leno debacle did 11 years on TBS. And if it wasn't for Jay, I guarantee we wouldn't have to suffer through Jimmy Fallon. I won't say Conan is as good as Carson, but it's comparing apples to oranges. The world changes, and though Johnny was a titan of late night, I personally appreciate Conan's sense of humor more, but that might be a result of being in Conan's target demographic my whole life. If the Internet didn't exists, Conan would still be on network TV, no doubt, because Letterman would have invited him to take over the Late Show after what happened with Leno.

One of my most favorite movies is "Mixed Nuts," starring STEVE MARTIN (soo good at soo much!!) & Juliette Lewis (she so hit the🎯 w/her character), Rita Wilson, Anthony LaPaglia, Madeline Kan, Garry Shandling, Steven Wright, Adam Sandler, Liev Schreiber (amazing job!), Robert Klein & more. It's a farce, but more than meets the eye. I think it was waaay ahead of its time; critics didn't grok it/appreciate all the creativity & artistry of writers, cast, crew & director; couldn't imagine there were lots of peeps who would love it (for the so many reasons as there are layers & facets to it, including the variety of humor mixed w/varieties of real-life angst & ambivalences, nefarious peeps, absurdities, surprises, a very rich farce that provides food for thought long after movie ends).
