Always nice to see and hear you playing‘classical’ style, something we’re at risk of losing as ‘loud, fast and hard’ seem to be the mantra these days. Hitting rather than playing what is a beautiful musical instrument.
Hi Steve! Congratulations on getting one of your favorite kits back in your collection. That kit is gorgeous and I think it’s one of the best sounding kits I’ve ever heard. So warm and punchy and very pleasing to hear. You were great as usual and I could tell you were really enjoying playing it. Now I want one, but I’ll have to downsize a few or my wife will do it for me.....and of course, I don’t want to do that. 😊. Take care and peace and love to you and your family.
I actually have part of the copper wrap version with the 24" bass, 15" and 20" toms. The wrap is in bad shape and the previous owner changed some hardware but the shells still sound great. It didn't have the Slingerland snare when I got it, sadly. Still, I love it and I'll probably never get rid of it.
I have a set similar to yours ! I had the shells Re wrapped, added 2new Ludwig rack Toms 12x15, 12x14, the Slingerland drums are 9x12 rack Tom ,16x18 Floor Tom , 26x14 Bass drum , replaced all heads and new Slingerland logo on bass .all DW 9000 hardware, Ludwig 6 1/2 x 14 Stainless snare , Paisty 2002 24 and 26” rides
My best friend growing up was also a drummer and he got a set of the copper covered Slingerlands, which sounded excellent. I always remembered how warm the toms sounded and the kick was loud and punchy. Fast forward 30 years and i found a set of chromies for sale on Craigslist. I watched them for over a month, the price dropped once, then a second time, and finally a third time and then i called the guy selling them and offrred him fifty bucks less. He agreed to my offer and when we met and i saw the drums i felt guilty. He had these beauties polished like mirrors, the dampners were even shining like new money, brand new heads on the batter and reso side of every drum, they were, and still are, gorgeous drums. 24, 13, 14, 16, no snare but for $400 i felt like i got a good deal. I will drop a link so you can hear em, i have many sets but the Slingerlands are my everyday players and only leave the house for special gigs. Nice playing btw, you got chops!
Watching this video convinced me to diabolically plan to take a double bass drum kit to my next jazz cocktail gig...and scare the crap out of eveyone present! 😁 Nice playing Steve!
What a great story! I absolutely love those drums! Back in 1980 when I was 10 years old, I started taking drum lessons. My teacher had a Slingerland chrome over wood kit. This brings back so many wonderful memories for me! Thank You!
I own the exact model kit referred to below which Jimmy Fox of the James Gang, and many others, used and is now a part of Rock & Roll history. It is without question the best sounding kit I have ever owned in my life. Along with that kit I also own something you will never, ever see for sale or have an opportunity to own and that is a 100% genuine Slingerland gong with the "Slingerland" official logo etched into the gong by Slingerland. The first and last time I ever saw one of those gongs used was when Phil Ehart of KANSAS used one live in concert. I am the original owner of all these items which I bought brand new in downtown NYC at what was then called "Manny's Music." In fact, it was one of the Manny family members who sold me the items, as well as hard fiber cases for all of the actual drums. These cases were custom made for Manny's Music and were sold only by them I was told. I made my own wooden case for the gong which has kept it looking like new after all these years. The actual drums themselves are beautiful, well kept, and head turning to this very day. They are as follows: Two (2) VIRGIN 14 X 24 Bass Drums with dual spurs, 10 X 14 and 11 X 15 rack toms on the set-o-matic stand, 16 X 16 and 16 X 18 floor toms with legs. Snare is chrome 14 X 6.5. In what was yet another amazing surprise coincidence in my life, after the Niles, IL factory was closed, Mr. Slingerland retired to Florida and my brother, who worked for Cadillac, sold him a brand new Cadillac! He told Mr. Slingerland about my drum kit and then, right there in the dealership, the elder Slingerland was kind enough to give me a call and we talked for about a half-hour about the company, my drums, as well as the gong (which was made for the company in Italy). Great story! Fellow drummer here. Nice chops,and great sounding kit,w/a snare to die for! I'd KILL for a Slingerland Magnum kit w the Cannon Toms going down to all the lower end Concert Toms,but God only knows if those kits still exist.

Steve I had chrome over wood Slingerland drums. My kit were concert toms 2 22x14 10 12 13 14 15 16 18..I would have loved to have had 3 toms across the front 10 12 13 or 12 13 13...If you ever have anything like this for sale let me know!...My all time favourite kit from my youth. Me too great great memories!!
Those sound awsome, great tone and the snare is especially nice with a great crack and sensitivity, I'd be interested to know how thick the chrome 'wrap' is?
Hi Steve: Always great to here you play the classic kit's . Who was first with the c.o.w ? I have a Gretsch c.o.w from the 70's with that sheet metal chrome finish. Thank's.
Neal Smith from Alice Cooper just sold his giant COW a few months ago. Could be part of it. To bad the heads didn't give a clue. This kit is a great drumming mystery. Where did it come from ?
Sounds great! Tuned so high. I have an early 70s Slingerland but I keep it tuned medium and muffled for more of a 70s rock vibe. I have to try a jazz tuning. Do you have the internal mufflers engaged?
