Steve Miller talks about starting off playing gigs at dances to eventually producing his own record, The Joker, which went platinum...check out www.nightflight... for more information...
Mr. Miller has got to be one of the smartest R&R musicians around. Watch his pre induction video for the R&R HOF. He tells it like it is and rips them a new one.
I was a huge Steve Miller fan in the early days. Sailor, #5, etc, great albums............. but when he sold out and went POP (the Joker, etc.) he became just another pop star. What a shame.
He didn't really sell out to be honest. He got bored with the San Fran scene especially after his old band mates left and wanted to do laid back blues and rock, unlike the tedious psychedelia he had been doing before. My favorite Miller albums are Children, Sailor, Your Saving Grace, etc., but I can still bump Eagle and the Joker when I feel like having fun. It's artistic direction, especially in Miller's case. I understand that he changed direction, but there's so much hate towards the 70's for him that I really don't understand.
@@noahmatteson4525 Steve still has interest in jazz and blues and tries to incorporate that into his shows with new songs but he said usually fans from all ages want to hear the 70’s hits. In my opinion he is a guy who could’ve made a living doing jazz clubs blues music etc. but he doubt would be a millionaire doing it. I don’t particularly think he’s sold out as the poster before you said. I always thought about him a combination of blues, jazz, a little country, & soft or pop rock. Whatever he’s been doing for 60 years he’s been a success. He also didn’t give in to other people telling him what songs to write what music to play etc. In some interviews there seems to be an undertone of him not feeling entirely satisfied where he’s at. He is a success story. I often wonder if he was a little trapped with the pop music because he was so successful at it. To go back to doing jazz or blues he might not have been as successful..but not sure. I think he’s had to work really hard to get to where he is now. He could do anything he wants now. He’s certainly not a struggling musician. I love listening to his stories!🙂
