“Rick Beato” this & “Rick Beato” that… YOUR interviews deserve at least as much widespread acclaim, as you often seem to steer these conversations, exactly where I wish more interviewers would. So I guess that means that I think that I’M the Gold Standard of artist inquisitors, then?! 🤔 Seriously, though, thank you for always digging deeper than the norm, and really getting at the nuts, bolts, motivations, & inspirations of these masters’ processes - the stuff that’s not quantifiable or geared to rote replies, but that is the most revelatory❗️And thank you for focusing the spotlight on Steve’s most arresting gift - his uncommonly facile, fertile, & profound compositional imagination. That he delivers them with exhilarating & expressive technique is secondary, but that IS quantifiable, so it’s lower hanging fruit, for most journalists & superficial listeners. WONDERFUL conversation with Andy West, too. And Andy Partridge. And Dave Gregory! Thanks, so much, for all of them‼️ I was at the Town Hall show, too - yet another testament to Steve’s undimmed passion, tireless perseverance, and unbreakable will. He continues to inspire AND shame me with his ceaseless displays of superheroic fortitude‼️

You write very well. Steve's sadness due to his wife's death is clear. This world is a transition to eternal life, I believe, just like Steve Morse's music. Guitar and composition genius.

Steve is just the nicest person, the greatest guitarist...ever. How can you not love this guy? Incredible composer as well. My heart breaks that he lost his wonderful wife. Hang in there Steve...we love you (in a non-gay way of course).

Steves story about the Mahavishnu is almost the same as when I first saw Steve play live. Purple came out to South Africa first time 1994. I had no money for the tickets but knew a security guy who got me in. It was a 3 way bill, Purple played last. When I got in i stood right at the back behind the seated part of the crowd but the in the break when they were setting up for Purple all the people at the front o the stage went to get drinks or whatever so I just walked to the front and saw Steves roadie setting up this pedal board. So i positioned myself as close as possible to where he would be standing and literally held on to the stage so no one could push me away. Then he came out and it was the most mind blowing experience of my life. I went home and immediately started practicing!! I saw them again years later. That time I actually paid for a ticket.....

First comment! Thank you for doing this Greg - it was great running into you backstage at the show on 5/15! I have lots to share. Seeing my guitar hero Steve Morse & the Dregs at Town Hall the other night was FANTASTIC! It proved to me that while it may not be the same, you can go back. That evening, I went back to the early 1980s hearing & seeing what came off that stage. In ‘81 my brother John & I opened for the Dregs @ The Fountain Casino in Cliffwood, NJ w/ our jazz-rock fusion band and started a fan/friendship w/ the band & crew that resulted in our somehow being able to get on their guest list & backstage for every show they played in NJ for the next few years. When I saw Steve again that night for the 1st time 40+ years he seemed to remember me - but perhaps he was just being polite. It didn’t matter, it was just amazing to see & hear him again. And since those days, our worlds got even closer together…Unbeknownst to him; drummer Van Romaine was the drummer in the 1st original band my bro & I had in 1983 - and he’s been the drummer in the Steve Morse band for decades now (that band opened the show and sounded fantastic as well...) There was a moment in the Dregs set during “Hereafter” where I uncontrollably wept in my seat - the melody, chords, emotion & memories overwhelmed me. Proving once again, the power of music. Backstage I reminded Steve what he’d said when I had asked him (in my curious student-of-music-20s) what his influences were and he told me “Bach, Beethoven, Mahavishnu and Jimmy Page”. We laughed and he agreed, that was pretty much it. Some things you just never forget.

Thanks so much for this interview Greg! "You encompass all of the best qualities of what it takes to present instrumental music to an audience." Perfectly stated! It was so great to hear "Leprechaun Promenade" and "I'm Freaking Out" on this tour. The hairs on my arms were elevated most of the night. Hearing and watching it live, you really get a sense of the level of ensemble play and counter-point in Steve's compositions. What an absolute genius. To think he was in his early 20's writing a lot of that stuff. And of course, the material later on is also brilliant. He has been such a major influence in my writing and arranging, more so than even my guitar playing. Writing is where the rubber meets the road for me. Great players are a dime-a-dozen...Great writers, not so much. Steve is still my favorite composer/guitar player, bar none, not to mention his humility and great character. "Since I've Been Loving You" is may favorite Page solo as well; and I have a Juice Extractor! 🙂
