Gabby Barrett sings “Don't Stop Believing" Steve Perry in Audience American Idol 2018 Finale Top 3
Former Journey lead singer Steve Perry gave one American Idol contestant the surprise of a lifetime this weekend after her performance of the band’s hit “Don’t Stop Believin'”.
Perry was in the audience during Gabby Barrett’s final performance on Sunday night’s episode, although Barrett wasn’t aware of it until after she finished the song.
“Oh my gosh, I know who that is,” screamed Barrett as Perry laughed from the audience.
“She was amazing, that’s my critique,” said Perry when invited by the show’s judges to give his opinion. He also claimed it was “the most amazing version” he’s ever heard.

There will only ever be Karaoke from here on out. All the world will ever have is the recordings and vids and fading memories of those days. Perry could probably still sing a reasonable wedding party version, But I doubt he'll ever want a contemporary live performance for fear of doing the song an injustice

This was from 2018, when he had just turned 69, he is 74 now and in decline. I saw a short video recently of him hanging out backstage with the Temptations and not only has his hair gone completely white, but he seems to be shrinking.

@@nancywyatt821, I think he looks GREAT with his natural white hair! Black hair when you get into your 60’s is just not natural-looking, so I’m thrilled he made that decision. Joe Elliott of Def Leppard did too, in the past year or so, and both men are silver foxes if you ask me! ❤️

I'm 59 years old now, I was standing in the 8th row center stage watching Steve sing his heart out to this song way back in 1981 at 18 years old outdoors in the summer with string bikini's on girls everywhere you looked. It was a show I will never forget in my youth. There will never EVER be a Journey without him.

@@mikebreezy248 Pretty sure his mother was sick and dying when a lot of that was happening. During the recording of their last album together pretty sure she died during it. And he wanted to be with her taking care of her. And then later when they all reunited he broke his hip. I honestly think he was afraid of the surgery which is why he kept postponing it. But hey, yeah let's just call him a whiney baby. 🙄

@@robertthode2151 True. But, Pre-Steve Perry Journey was nothing to speak of, as well as post-Steve Perry Journey (in terms of new material). The best Journey material that is played today is still from Departure, Escape, Frontiers, and Raised On Radio.

She can hit the notes, but she has no power in her little voice nor any feeling. Steve Perry was the only one who could do justice to a song. The power, the vocals, the range, the emotion. I sure have missed him so much.

I'm a straight male, and I'd probably give him a hug! He is THE best voice ever to grace the radio waves and I'm privileged to have seen Journey 3 times with him. Of all the music celebrities in the world, I rate his (and the other band members) song writing ability right up there with Paul McCartney and john Lennon. Journey # for me! The Beatles a very close #2!

I love Steve Perry, but as an Australian it's really weird to me to hear people calling him The Voice. Ask any Aussie who The Voice is, and you'll only get one answer...John Farnham. I remember seeing Journey in concert back in 1983 when they were ruling the music world. Steve gave everything in his performance. He has one of those unique voices that's easily recognized: A truly one of a kind singer.

I met Steve Perry backstage when that song was on the charts. He was one of the nicest rockstars I have ever met. He seemed really surprised at the almost "we aren't worthy," crowd trying to be really close to him.

I’m 61 and out of all the bands and groups that I’ve seen and ever wanted to see was the Eagles and I never got to see them and Journey, Steve Perry is by far the greatest voice I’ve ever heard. His range from song to song was second to none. That group should’ve retired together. I even got to see Lynyrd Skynyrd in the Lake Charles Civic center before they made it big. Van Zant was a god of gods and his writing skills were legendary but there was never a voice like Steve. Just the most amazing human being with that special voice. 🙏🏻🙏🏻😭😭😭

@@TinyFreya59 I'd take Steve Perry in his prime over anyone any day. Unfortunately, at over 70, he's no longer in his prime. Neither is Arnel Pineda. I've watched a recent video of Steve Augeri and he wasn't terrible, but I'd still take Deen Castronovo over all of them. He's still pretty good.
