In this review we take a look at the long time requested film; Leafie A Hen Into The Wild, or perhaps known as Daisy A Hen Into The Wild if you're familiar with the English Dub. A film full of beauty, tragedy, and an otter taking a dump. Please enjoy!

as a battery hen leafie wouldn't have lived too long anyways. they're unfortunately bred for production, not health, and even rescued battery hens are going to develop major health problems. so, she lived a good life and helped another mother take care of her children, that's a good end to her arc.
@cypheri1339
@cypheri1339 3 года назад
If they're rescued early enough in their lifespan and are kept on a more natural lay schedule using only natural light to regulate their cycle they can live fairly long lives, but they definitely are never going to be as fit and healthy as a heritage hen. If I had to guess, Leafie is probably based roughly on a brown leghorn. The hens have a yellowish head/neck, dark brown body, and somewhat lighter underfluff. The most common breed of egg hen (at least in my part of the world) is a white leghorn and brown leghorn productivity is negligibly different from the solid variety so it would make sense.

if leafie was a cornish/broiler hen that would definitely be the case, as they were specifically bred to grow as fast as possible so if they aren't killed anyway they just grow so large to the point of either dying from organ failure bc of being so unnaturally large in such a short amount of time or they become crippled at simply their sheer weight and size they are forced to grow into. i honestly think these types of chickens shouldn't even exist, they were literally just bred to suffer

I have a friend who cares for rescued battery hens. Sadly, they never last longer than six months or so; but she always does her best to give them a comfortable life. I understand the need for fast production, but there's got to be a way to get plenty of eggs without being cruel to the hens.

It's not that sad, though? Ok it's sad. But the strong implication that Leafy wasn't going to survive the winter anyway made it kinda sweet that she chose to let her body go to feeding the predator's babies, instead of letting her meat go to waste. You can at least give credit to Don Bluth's older films that he had a lot of dark themes to them even though they are films that he produced for the whole family to watch, and yes, kids too. And while his films typically had happy endings, there was a lot of sh*t and sad events that happened too. So in conclusion, I give Don props for at least being an American animation film producer that doesn't shy away from dark and depressing themes in children's films similarly to countries outside of the US. If you haven't already, check out Secret of NIMH, The Land Before Time, An American Tail and All Dogs Go to Heaven. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

I think that was actually his last attempt to put a stop to the weasel. If he didn't confront her that night, the weasel would have gone for Leafie and possibly their egg. During most of the fight he was moving backwards and trying to avoid hits, rather than land them. And when the weasel grabbed his leg, he flew as high as he could with her with the hope that the fall would kill her.

Got that weasel’s voice was just tragic… The idea that like… even if Leafie left them and just took her son, that would still be leaving these weasels in a miserable state. She’s just hoping for this meal to be able to feed her children before they starve and now Leafie is standing in between her and their survival. But if she doesn’t comply and let this meal go, Leafie could just crush her children anyway as revenge. The voice acting drives home just how tough of a place this poor thing is being put in and Leafie’s sacrifice truly ties it all together.

I read the book just a few days ago. At the end, after greeny says his goodbye, leafie is sad because she can't fly and she blames herself for not trying to learn how to fly. And after weasel catches her, the story says that leafies spirit flies and is happy about it and she sees weasel while she is carrying leafies body with her jaws. So yeah. The last perspective is leafies souls, while her dream, flying has come true. OK I'm crying again it's just so sad and beautiful at the same time.

There's a difference between torturing living things when it isn't necessary and torturing living things so your own species can thrive and keep existing. In nature it is all about balance, without carnivores there would hardly any plants and smaller animals wouldn't have shelter or places to sleep for the night, however if there are too many carnivores then the plants will over grow, causing many fires. Sort of unrelated, but I think that the one-eyed "weasel" in this film is a actually not a weasel at all, but a closely related animal; either a fisher cat (it's not really a cat) or a mink. Her coloration seems too dark to be a weasel or a stoat, and she appears significantly bigger than those. Fishers and minks are both known to kill ducks and chickens, and occasionally go on killing sprees. My guess is that they called her a weasel because that is a more familiar animal.

Weasels are known for eating farm yard animals as well. If a weasel gets in a chicken coup it will eat the eggs, chick's, and adult chickens. Weasels are well known for killing things much larger than themselves and also killing more than they can eat. If a weasel has just eaten it will kill again if it has the opportunity. Pound for pound the weasel and its cousins are among the top predetors in the animal kingdom. You are right about the size though, but that was probably a stylized change to make it more imposing.

Either that or it was Leafie going to heaven and experiencing what would happen if she could fly and follow her son. Either way this film seems more mature than most cartoons that tend to be made in the west. it tried to depict an actual situation that can happen in life, have anthropomorphic animals g through it and grow from it.

The weasel's tears to me are tears of frustration (and bitter sweet gratitude) with her role in life as a predator mother and having to take up leafie's sacrifice just to feed her own offspring. (Moms, no matter the species, def don't want their kids to starve) Both have there own roles of existence to play out, and to reach that understanding was amazing in this film. Deep lessons all around. Such an amazing underrated film.

@Yanis Khaled I agree that the simplicity of children’s stories are better (just villain v hero), exspeically for young children. I been hating how everyone always pities or loves the villain becuase of some tragic backstory or being hot and funny. I swear, you can make that kind of a villain commit war crimes and still be likeable to some. But I believe that this film would work wonderfully for more mature children. They must learn eventually, and would get the moral of understanding others views.

That reminds me of some stories in Buddhism, I believe it might have an incluence on the story, specially that end... There's one story where a past reincarnation of the Buddha was a monk, and he decided to let himself get eaten by some lions/tigers/big cats cubs, so they won't starve. And there's another story about a monk that let his blood get sucked out by thousands of mosquitoes, also in other to feed them, as a sacrifice. The following life, he reincarnates as a king and ate through his life the reincarnations of those mosquitoes, that became ducks in other to feed him and compensate him. I can sense similar vibes, I love this kind of story
@fawnieee

@Yanis Khaled Because life is so much more complicated than "good vs bad", it really saddens me that people are so desperate to infantalise kids these days. They're so much smarter than you give them credit for the and BEST thing you can do is teach your children what the real world is like. Unlike the whole "the world is so fair and good, you have nothing to worry about", you need to teach kids that isn't true at all. When you don't teach kids about life or death they become terrified of it and don't become critical and independent thinkers. The world isn't a happy perfect place where no one dies, never has been and never will be.

Accepting worldviews that ultimately causes more suffering and are somewhat moral? Very much objectionable. Abolishing suffering through biological reprogramming (eg. gene manipulation to prevent suffering from being too extreme, achieving superintelligence, immortality and permanent state of contentment and downloadable memories) and completely changing the state of the ecosystem that is currently causing so much suffering to both predators and prey to extinction is an absolute must that humanity should try to achieve. The current system is a fucking mess and cruelly indifferent to most species, while humans are benefitting out of it. Suffering-Focused Ethics (Negative Utilitarianism) is very much the best normative morality out there and the society should start realizing it. I like the way this movie shows death as just another part life. All too often, kids media, especially here in the US, simply avoid the subject because they think kids wouldn't handle it. But that's obviously not true because kids are smarter than we give them credit for and I'm sure that they've experienced death one way or another, maybe with a family member or a pet. Its important to show them that while death is sometimes sad and even scary, it's just another part of life and one that we need to accept. So I applaud this movie for being dark because it serves a purpose and it treats its target audience with respect

It's so unfortunate that things get so censored and dumbed down in western animation. Animation is not, and doesn't need to be limited to children. While I do enjoy Western animation, it can become boring. You pretty much know from the start that there's gonna be a happy ending. The original is better to me because it allows the audience to take in the gravity of each situation, to actually feel the emotion the directors were aiming for. It makes me feel a lot more respect for them BECAUSE they aren't holding back. That's just my perspective though. No judgment if you like the dubbed version ✌

This looks like a BEAUTIFUL movie. I like how that doesn't stand on the troupe of predators being "evil" and prey inherently "good." I also think the original is much more "eastern" ethically/philosophically. Where in the West you'd expect something more like "Death bad, life good", I'd expect a movie from someone with an "eastern" background to acknowledge that the plucky young protagonist getting away might spell starvation for a whole family of predators, and that their death could represent the coronation of a fulfilled life and becoming part of something greater.

We're led to believe she's just a mindless killing machine: a stereotypical villain that tries to stand in the hero's way. But that curveball where she's only a desperate mother trying to save her babies gets you thinking... she's not evil at all. And that last part that was unfortunately cut out where Leafie sacrifices herself to save the weasel's babies actually had me tearing up like the weasel. Just think of how she must have felt. The range of emotions. She'd been pursuing this chicken throughout the entire movie, and finally here she is, offering herself. I can picture the tears of joy of finally having her prey, but also... legit tears of sadness as these two had a bit of a bond themselves by this point. You definitely weren't looking into it too hard! In the book, it is outright stated that Leafie sees the weasel drag away her body and flies away as a soul. Oh Christ... I'm tearing up again!

They should never have cut the ending, like wow! Its so rare to see a carnivore depicted as simply doing what it must to survive! The weasel even cries when charges forward, showing just how much she appreciates the sacrifice that will no doubt save her own babies! :''''3

I cant get over the finale of the original uncut version. Leafies sacrifice, the weasels respect for her as she accepts fate, the tears. Leafie wants to help continue life. And she knew that her own body would not go to waste with the weasel, instead helping her feed the children she saw with her own eyes. Leafie is not just a good mother to Greenie, but also a guardian angel to those babies of the weasel.

To add on to what you've said about Leafie's sacrifice, I notice that it bring's her character arc full circle. She always wanted to be a mother, with someone care and provide for, and she got her wish through adopting Greenie. But with Greenie grown up and leaving home, and her own death approaching, she willfully sacrifices herself in order to provide for the children of her long-time enemy. Leafie has gotten everything she wanted, both in life and in death. In my eyes, this film feels very much like a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. The characters undergo tragedy and hardship, but their sacrifice is rewarded in the end and they ultimately get what they wanted.

Not gonna lie, I think Wanderer's hair makes him look pretty cool - though I think the art style is what really sells him as a bad ass. Also WOW that ending made me cry, I don't usually get like that. The original voice over performance for the weasel was also very compelling.

The tearful leaping part is, to me, the crux of the weasels character development. It's what separates her as a mother doing what she needs to do from a random scenery chewing villain just killing for the hell of it.

I just noticed something. Saberspark reviews all the cursed things while Steve reviews all the deep, and artistic yet brutal cartoons and animated films. Man you guys definitely found your grooves, and you do very well with both of them. You two are my favorite review channels, you pick up things no one else would, on two different sides, and shed light on them in the best ways you can without getting complicated or confusing. It's just something I noticed, and I'm very glad both of you are here doing this. These were just kind of my observations and thoughts on what you both do. It's in no way bad, it's a healthy way to go about things, not being afraid to explore depths of films and animations that others heavily shy away from or can't explain in a way that does them justice
