Todays Famous Grave visit is the former Singer of Visage and major New Romantic influencer Steve Strange.
Stephen John Harrington (28 May 1959 - 12 February 2015), known professionally as Steve Strange, was a Welsh singer. From the late 1970s, he was a nightclub host and promoter. @toddblanks
@toddblanks Год назад
@@harryseddon776 The 70's all the way from beginning to end never missed a beat for music. But i also love the 1980's for music. 80's bands moved things more forward into different sound textures due to the electronics with the synthesizer and programming which helped broaden horizons. The 70's is a very interesting decade for music. I think most people who prefer the 80's is because there was a lot of depression in previous times looking at ways to escape it through their own music. But most look back at the 70's stuff today and remind themselves that there was some amazing bands at the time who they were definitely influenced by. People like marc bolan, david bowie, roxy music, brian eno, the talking heads just to name a few, were massively influential.
@pennymcneela7095
@pennymcneela7095 Год назад
@@toddblanks , I do believe Queen was influenced by Sweet, on some of their songs I hear Sweets singing techniques and lyrics scattered about. Sweet was one of the most underrated bands of the 70's but their music was fantastic.

I've heard of Visage, heard of Steve Strange but didn't know he'd passed. I think his influence helped make the new romantic fashion styles attractive and available to ordinary people, a bit like the mods in the 1960s. He's left a proud and worthy legacy.

As a kid I would sit alone listening to Visage. I never grew out of the new romantic movement, so would often be bullied when music and fashion moved on. I went to Steve’s 50th birthday party and a few of his events in the mid 2000s. I went alone to his funeral, a 500 mile round-trip. I stood in the rain for two hours waiting. I was interviewed by the Sun, newspaper, heart, radio, and local papers in Radio due to the way I was dressed. The BBC and Boy George tweeted pictures of the wreath I had sent with our picture on. I send a wreath every year to his sister for the grave. I am still so upset that I have never managed to get there myself, so thank you for posting this. Last tune, I represented and led the new romantic, 1980s section of the Queen’s platinum jubilee parade through London. I did it for him. I still cry every time I hear fade to Grey. He was such a pioneer and leader of the 80s music and fashion movement. I will never get over his loss and have a tattoo of the fade to Grey single cover on my arm.

I was 14 when Steve shot to stardom with Fade To Grey. I was instantly hooked not only on the song, but on him and the beautiful girls who always performed with him. I lived in Germany at the time, and the song took the number one spot for a long time. I loved Steve's eccentricity, his clothes, his style. He was a fascinating man, and I know that he influenced my generation in a big way, which I will be forever grateful for. He gave so much to the music industry, and he ushered in the New Romantic Wave, which was so important to many of us back then. I was absolutely shocked back in 2015 when I heard he had passed away. There is a sad truth to the saying that the great people die young. Rest in peace, Steve.

Very interesting and respectful video. Steve had a long standing drug addiction going back to his early twenties and although he may have finally beaten it , it took its toll on his mental and physical health. That plus money troubles was part of why he ended up living with his sister and her family.I also believe he had some kind of stroke several years before he passed away. I remember a friend of mine, who is sadly no longer with us, telling me that when he worked in a record shop in London in the 1980s, Steve was banned from coming in because of his previous behaviour (probably due to the drugs). And as every Bowie fan knows, Steve was in the video for Bowie's 1980 song 'Ashes to ashes ' (filmed in Scarborough I think). Anyway, Fade to grey is a brilliant record and one of the seminal tracks of the early 1980s. A haunting song from a unique artist.

Thanks Paul, great video, respectfully done 👍 the New Romantic scene was not for me, however the late great Steve Strange was an 80’s icon and will be forever, also a talented guy. You could not think of the New Romantics, without Steve’s name coming first. The thing I like best, when I hear Visage, it takes me right back to the early 80’s, High School days, great memories and fantastic music 🎵. Steve played a massive part in creating that era. I hope he has found peace 🙏

Great tribute, amongst all his hits “Mind of a toy” was my fav, but undoubtedly a massive pioneer for the beginning of the new romantic era, dearly missed 🌈

Fade to grey is such an iconic song for me, takes me straight back to our old family home when I was a nipper, like yourself I was born in the 70’s and remember the early 80’s and seeing these new wave bands on top of the pops etc, I’m my opinion it was much better times in those days and better music! RIP Steve and thanks for your contribution to music 👍
