Man i always loved his part in crossroads! Kinda disappointed he went to ibanez instead of sticking with jackson/ charvel like that red jackson he had in the movie 😅
Hi Emily, I got to see Steve Vai perform with Whitesnake, the G3 show with him, Joe Satriani, and John Petrucci and also one of his solo tours. You’re very lucky to meet him personally. You should try to find one of his CARVIN STEVE VAI LEGACY unit to add to your collection, but I’m sure it will expensive if you do find it. Keep on rockin’🎸
The coolest thing I ever learned from Steve Vai was in a guitar magazine column (Pretty sure it was ‘Guitar World’) and the concept of solfage-basically everything you hear on an album and in a song you hum. I started doing this with my guitar and became terrible at playing by ear to pretty decent (some stuff still eludes me like altered tunings and some really low 7/8/baritone string detuned stuff but everything in E, Eb, Drop D or Db is pretty reasonable to play back from the album and my speakers to my fretboard. That was one of the best guitar magazine lessons I can remember. This guitar teacher who was the best shredder I ever took lessons from and can play any Zakk, Ygnwie, EVH (his favorite player), etc. solo right back to you off the album live on the spot during a guitar lesson (literally nothing was too difficult for this guy, he could tour on lead guitar for Zack Wylde or anybody else that’s crazy good if they needed him to do so for whatever reason) was also really big on solfage/humming notes to figure out songs and solos. He also loved Jazz and we were both obsessed with the jazz guitar virtuosity of Joe Pass, Al Dimeola, Grant Green, Pat Metheney. If you ever get into Jazz just immerse yourself into John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Weather Report, Return to Forever, and Miles David’s albums and you will be good to go. I’m gonna call those guys the Apex of that genre. Also, what are some of your favorite Vai songs? For me that’s ‘Building The Church’, ‘For the love of god’, ‘Bad Horsie’, and ‘Highly Strung’ with Aussie PRS shredder phenom Orianthi
Awesome video Emily! Happy Birthday Steve! He has always been one of my favorites, as he is amazing! You and family have a great weekend Emily! Love your channel! Next week I will be seeing Dokken again in Albany, NY at an Alive at 5. Free show outside! I saw Dokken in the 80's and 90's, but I have to see my man Don one more time and pay my respect to him as he is one of my biggest vocal influences ( I sang in bands over the years) and he recently said the last album that came out in October could be the last. But he's a legend for sure. Best wishes always and keep rocking like always Emily! You're awesome! 😃🤘🤘
I was familiar with Vai from his work with Zappa and was introduced to his music when my buddy played me the Flexible album. Just amazing. Also think the Alcatraz album with Vai is one of the best that he's done. Interesting little tidbits. Zappa had Vai play all the guitar solos he'd written but couldn't play. He's usually credited as "impossible guitar parts". Zappa also taught Vai a valuable lesson in the music business - own your own music. Steve has always had good business sense and made sure he profited most from his efforts.
I have a 1989 Jem 777DY and a 2016 Jem 70V Sea Foam Green and a couple of other Ibanez guitars. All signed by Steve. He played my Jem 777DY in 2007 I think your swirl guitar looks good. But it needs a clear pickguard. and backing plates. Great Video. I've been a fan of Steve's since the DLR days and Crossroad movie. The Whitesnake album is absolutely the best. I saw that tour 2 times. Have a good weekend.
Always nice to see this pop up in my recommended videos! I always had a love for Steve and always felt in the 80’s he was always under appreciated and slept on by the public due to him always filling in big shoes when joining new groups, whether it be EVH, Malmsteen or Sykes, and that always made me sad because Vai always showed he could hold his own, and then some, with each respective group. I remember reading my dads old guitar magazines when I starting out at 12 and every interview I read with Vai, Satch or Gilbert always struck me as Randy Rhoads type mentality, guys who always had their priorities as Teacher, Muscian, Rockstar from first to last as opposed to the other way around…..then I read my first Yngwie interview in 1986 on the height of trilogy, enough said there 😂 but all in all I’ve always loved Steve’s positive attitude and overall humble, no airs, personality. I can tell he’s always been passionate about simply creating music and playing guitar, I mean the man has a well known 10 hour “warm up” out there for anyone to try out! Also helps his stuff is always super fun to learn and play, especially once one learns how to pull off his unique vibrato bar tricks, super satisfying!
Cool video! I’ve been trying to find a Jem in left hand orientation that isn’t overly expensive, yet it is a hard find! Your solo sounded great. Thanks for sharing your Steve Vai wisdom! 🤘🏼😎 🎸
I saw Steve on that Whitesnake tour and he was great. I remember in the 80s the question was about who was better Eddie or Steve. I believe both are great guitarists. Keep up the great work on your channel. I did buy one of your shirts and it is great.
Ill have to re watch...dropped in while you were fan girling over the Jem (was waiting for the hug or kiss on the neck haha!) Great vid as always. Such a great tribute to the almighty wizard Steve! Very curious if you have ever attempted his 10 or 30 hour work out? And of course how about the notorious 10 day distilled water fast which birthed For the Love of God? (And probably much of the P&W Lp)
the words greatest at anything and the word hero! i dont use them ....too freely,... allot of good at things people. remarkable yes greatest maybe depends on the judges and what is being judged!!
