+Justin Rivera HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! It was so painful. It takes balls to get up there and sing like that tho.... In front of people. I mean.....where they can hear you....
+Rocco Astoria well you can say what you want about this specific performance but Steve Vai is one of the most technical guitar players of all time. He's right up there with Yngwie.
It's been said before...but Iron Maiden is one of my all-time favourite bands, so needless to say (but I will anyway), those vocals shocked the shit out of me... Now I'm gonna have to go listen to the original again for recovery.
I can push the trem all the way to the body on my Ibanez till the strings are just hanging off the neck ,then let it go and it's perfectly in tune...works if I pull up too... 90's RG560 under rated guitar...wizard neck ,24 frets
Well, Steve Vai is not this kind of man. He is truly respectful and would try to help the others to give the best of themselves rather than blame them!
This should have had a camera for the Drummer... I mean come on... That's no ordinary drummer sitting behind the kit. It's the One and Only NICKO Mcbrain himself... One of My all time drummers...
Why is it we always tend to criticize everything we experience? Can't we just enjoy the performance for what it is? For God's sake, it's Vai playing Maiden!!
You can’t enjoy the experience with that voice, sorry. Thank goodness there is a BUNCH of guitar in this song. Plus this is probably my favorite IM song and it’s a disgrace.
Derkabronen Fredi was thinking that myself , sounds like somebody singing karaoke, not meaning to bash the guy singing , he would prolly do a better job than me, and at least he knows the words :P
I was definitely hearing it but you texted it first. When your singing off KEY. wow itsssssssss really hard to listen to. Dude we are not tone deaf. 🤔🤔
Unfortunately Maiden songs are not just about technique, there is way more that. No one can play a Maiden song better than Maiden on the other hand Steve Vai is a phenomenal guitarist and this is a really solid performance except the vocal.
It´s the other way round ;) Dave and Adrian does this song miles better, compared to Vai. I know they are not playing it too seriously, but when you play a Maiden-song, you have an obligation to honor it with a great performance :/
I have been wondering for a while if it is worth posting anything about this? It possibly isn't as from what I have read a lot of people who post nasty critical comments are all 'experts' even though they were not there and know nothing about the circumstances this song was filmed in (without our permission as well I might add). Anyway, for what it's worth, this was Steve Vai playing as a guest of Nicko McBrain and myself at the London guitar show - it was just friends having a jam, nothing serious. Prior to the show we had one brief get-together were I showed Steve the parts and we had a quick play through - he had heard the song before but had never played it live. The singer Peter Eldridge had one day to learn and then perform this song - he is a great singer and a very nice bloke and he had a go but singing like Bruce obviously isn't really what he does! He has sung IM songs in the past (with Bruce too - search on RU-vid and you will find others) and it was fine. The Trooper is a hard song for anyone to sing so please cut him some slack here? As far as being nervous - we weren't - we are all professional players just having a bit of fun...The bassist playing with a pick, crap solos et al....None of that matters - all of the solos were totally improvised and yes, there are good bits and bad bits - that's what happens when you jam isn't it?! The bassist Andy Frost plays with a pick mostly so he did here - so what! - (Steve loved his playing btw). Hope this has helped clarify things a little.....P....
I was actually at this (vai did a masterclass as well) and I can say it sounded amazing. If I could Sound that good at a jam i'd be content with my life. I've heard Pete sing some amazing tunes and as for Phil... World class. How many of the haters on here actually play to a good standard let alone be able to do this song?
A big hug from Brazil ! You did a nice job ! Tell me more about this episode :D I dont know.....but it seems that Nicko McBrain and Steve are great friends, Am I right ?
I appreciate the fact that you did speak up, Phil. The background is quite interesting, and adds quite a bit to the appeal of this. It looks like it was fun and that in itself is awesome. The bulk of these "critics" have the collective experience of a yard-sale sign painter, would be hard pressed to tune the receiver to play their stereo, and are more likely to find themselves playing the game "ROCKSTAR" than EVER actually being one. But, haters gotta hate, right? Keep on livin' the dream, man!! Peace!
I don't think Steve vai has to learn a solo, especially a simple one like that, he could probably play the original note for note, but where's the fun in copying someone else
Love what he did with the solo here. Vai always pushes the boundaries as to whats tasteful and whats not but thats just his style. Hes a monster player and this was a good take
i gotta agree, this song is an all time classic, and NOBODY can play it like the original Iron Maiden can with Dave and Adrian, but then again ive listened to maiden now for 30 years
flister2011 Agreed, I have listen to Maiden all my life as well, so it´s hard to impress with a cover. But I don´t think that anyone, who has heard the original, will think it is good ;)
i know bruce keeps harping on about never getting any recognition from mainstream sources, but after all these years they have proved themselves as one of the best bands of all times, my sister used to listen to wham, and duran duran, etc in the 80's, and i have twice been proved correct against her arguments, Maiden has survived and are still going way into my adult life, and George Micheal was gay after all :) me 2 sister 0 hahaha i win sis ;) lol
flister2011 Yes. Maiden is not a typical Grammy-band, and nor have they been inducted into the "rock n´role hall of fame". But Iron Maiden is the second greatest selling metal-act on earth, they have at this point sold 115 million albums -only Metallica can top that with their 120 million. But if we look at the charts in the last 15 years, Maiden has surpassed Metallica with miles, since they still do excellent music, while Metallica has not made anything worth listening to since 91. They usually never get that many awards, but again, they are a true pure heavy metal-band, which means that they never sell out, and they never use the media to promote their stuff. Also, Maiden still plays almost as good as in the old days -that is pretty rare in present time for a metal.band ;)
Come on people. This is a fun hearted cover by serious musicians (ok the singers monitor must not be working Lol!). To say they can't play it correctly? Most average to above average musicians can do a pretty accurate cover of Maiden. It's pretty simple music. Lets not get carried away here.
I've seen High School Talent Show bands do a better version of 'The Trooper' than this buzz buzz buzz vibe-less version... The drummer is the only decent one...
To me the only good thing about this video was the guitar because it was played by Steve Vai and the drums because it was played by legendary god, in my opinion, Mr. Nicko McBrain because he was the actual drummer for this song. Steve Vai played Adrian's solo amazingly and I can't complain about how the other guy played Adrian's solo. The bass was badbutt as well as everything else except the vocals. Sorry but the vocals were horrible.
Xenofon Vasilakos I have my opinion and you have yours. If I like a virtuoso's improvisation over an original piece to fit his own style, it'd be my damn business.
I Could n't agree more!. I appreciate virtuosos' styles (excluding Malmsteen's) BUT.. some times they overdo it. I think he fell on that "pitfall" during the ending of the solo. What strikes me weird here is the choice of the vocalist. Don't you think so too?
Ok, you are listening to this cover for the first time, you just heard the vocalist's first line, were like "wtf?", and have scrolled down to see the comments. The vocals do get better....
To everyone comparing Steve's playing to Dave's... You realize it's a tribute and not a competition, right? Also, the singer sucks in this particular song, agreed.
