Upon discovering his aunt’s piano at the age of four, Steve Vai had what he describes as two epiphanies. The first one being that when he played notes to the right, he noticed they got higher. When he went to the left, they got lower. “Right at that moment, music just became very clear to me. That’s how music is created.” The second epiphany was realizing the infinite nature of the creation of music. “I was immediately flooded with the understanding of musical creativity. It was almost as if I was picking up from where I left off in another life or something like that.” He knew right then and there that music was all he wanted to do, and that he would never stray from the path of music. When he was a teenager he started taking guitar lessons from Joe Satriani, and started playing in local bands throughout high school. He attended Berklee College of Music and started working as a transcriptionist for Frank Zappa. Vai left Berklee to tour with the Frank Zappa band in 1980. Throughout the Eighties, Vai toured and recorded with David Lee Roth, Whitesnake, and many more bands. In 1990 he released his studio album, Passion and Warfare. My god, im 7 min in and beginning to well up with tears. What a beautiful story. Crossroads was the reason I began taking classical guitar lessons when I was 15 years old

I don't like his music but Vai comes across as an amazing person. He is a God-level player, clearly a musical genius and his love for the guitar is inspiring.

Steve Vai comprehends music the same way that Stephen Hawking comprehended the universe. 99.9% of us will never come close to his musical comprehension. I can think of only a handful. Vinnie Colaiuta. Victor Wooten. Chick Corea. Dave Weckl. EVH. Stevie Ray Vaughan and a few others. But all these cats are on a higher musical plane. And you know what? They are and were all so damn down to Earth.

What was the question again? Ha - I jest, this is an incredible monologue. Steve should do a spoken autobiographical tour, interspersed with some playing. Love Steve again. A humble, eloquent genius.

Great interview. He had an awesome guitar solo with different guitars when he was with Whitesnake touring in OKC in 90’ I believe.

Reeeeally fascinating interview. I've never seen an interview with Steve Vai. He seems like a really interesting, intense, focused Artist. @8:51 "You become what you think about. You morph into how you see yourself in your own mind."

I always enjoy listening to these type of interviews, because I know I'm not the only one who has these magic moments at the age of 4 or 5. People that don't understand, look at you like you are crazy. Well, I am, but for me it was I'm Losing You by Rod Stewart. I became a drummer, but I was also in awe of the guitar. Still am. Can't play, but i listen to it to learn the drums on so many songs. Thanks.

Great interview Steve. I think Reb Beach and/or Johnny Hiland would be good inclusions for Generation Axe.

my Guitar teacher Steve Silverman from Westburry long island told me he gave Steve Vai guitar lessons and Steve Silverman is a Great guitar teacher BUT for some reason Mr Vai never gives Steve Silverman any credit? I mean never why i do not know Steve Silverman told me he gave Steve Vai lessons for a long time and he was a good student and they got along well? Oh well?

I’ve had many of my drum students go on to successful careers. And that’s because they have a God given talent. And a good teacher recognizes that and simply points them in a positive direction. Those students were going to find their way with or without me. Good teachers aren’t looking to take credit, we do it to share our love for the instrument. I can proudly look at one of my former students and take satisfaction that they became great musicians. Peace.
