I was on the Vai crew and videotaped almost every performance (for years). This was in the 90s (before the time when everybody had camera phones etc at every show). Unfortunately the camera wasn't the greatest and the transfer suffered too, but still, fun! :)
Interesting; Steve sees you filming and gives you a show! Most guys would throw a tantrum and call security. Not Steve. He's like, "oh yeah, you wanna shoot video of me? Okay, I'll give you something to video!" Steve's cool like that. That's one reason why everyone loves him; he's a fan just like us who gets his rocks off jamming!
He will always be my favorite guitarist. I dont care what anyone else thinks. Lol and he has a great personality to go with his awesome guitar skills. Love Steve Vai
Oh wow, no kidding, what a great time that must've been! Did you shoot entire shows or just segments? You wouldn't happen to have more from this show, would you?
i have a feeling mike mangini is on drums there. couldnt see the drummer but could tell frm the way his right hand was hitting the high hats and they he hit cymbals.
I would either say it was so loud it was hurting his ears or the crowd was making the same faces at him and he was doing what I would do and that would be make em back what's up
This is a good performance of Bad Horsie but it's not his best performance in my opinion. His best was on a different night of this same tour. I actually had never seen this one until recently. The best one was available on Vai's own website for a longtime. It may still be there. I don't know.
wth where is all that sustain coming from? the fernandes sustainer doesnt seem like its installed on that guitar. the bit where he gets the guitar off his body and does the show is not possible without the sustainer. can anyone please explain?
this is from a year ago but i'm going to answer any way. this is not a note sustain this is just feedback from the guitar interacting with Vai monitors. and if you know what feedback is it's not that hard to control it and make that type of "stunts" jajaja.
This bare wood JEM (its name is Bad Horsie btw) doesn't have a sustainer on it, but it's different than the other ones because it has an Ash body. My main suspicion is that the reason he can get such heavenly distortion/sustain/feedbacks without a sustainer is the amp he was using on the period: a Bogner Ecstasy on a respectably high volume and probably a Boss DS-1 on the front on the lead moments. IMHO, this is my favorite Steve tone period. His 1996 G3's For the Love of God performance is another great example of this setup. Look the harmonics jumping out of the guitar at the end of the song, it's jaw dropping
