I spent years looking for this song. Heard it on a classic rock station, never remembered the song name/lyrics or artist. Got the record that it was on from my mom in February, put it on said album a few nights ago and jumped for joy in front of my roommate who thought I went nuts when it started playing. "Dude! Why you freaking out?" "I've been looking for this song for over 15 years since I heard it when I was 16" (just turned 32 on Sunday) I called my music friends who I use to track down certain songs, screaming "I'm not crazy! I found it! It's called "Valerie" by Steve Winwood. I knew it existed!" It's the little things in life like these moments I enjoy the most.

I'm 45 too. We had a special generation, and how we see this world will never be duplicated. Regardless of what I go through in this life, I know my childhood was probably at pinnacle of American youth, the 80's and 90's. No war, just a cold, quiet war with the USSR, and we still managed to capitalize on it 😂 Yeah we hid under our desks for fire drills but damn, that's what it was We had the jams. Oregon Trail was a real game, everyone got dysentery, and floppy disks were actually floppy

@ezradlionel711

@@ezradlionel711 So ipso facto used his voice? I don't get what your intent is here.
@ezradlionel711
@ezradlionel711 2 года назад
@@boerebru If you had said "Well Eric Prydz sampled this song for Call on me" I wouldn't have said anything. "Used his voice" sounds pretty ambiguous to me. His voice wasn't some ancillary instrument on the track, it's the entire song. Plus it wasn't originally Eric's song -- he took a Daft Punk members DJ loop and got the rights to do a full arrangement and had to re-do the song because he couldn't get rights for the Master. So when you say use his voice, I think you're glossing over a bunch of stuff.
@boerebru
@boerebru 2 года назад
@@ezradlionel711 My comment is in relation to the comment before that said he considers Steve Winwood's voice an instrument and I was basically saying your not alone cause it got used like an instrument in the song Call on me. Why you got to make a mountain out of an ant hill?

My fan is blowing my hair back right now just like in this video, and moments ago I just bought myself a ticket to my very first Steve Winwood concert for my 52nd birthday treat! It will be the absolute best day of 2024, and I might cry. Reflecting back to my teen self, holding my Steve Winwood cassette tape that had just arrived in our family mailbox from my Columbia House music subscription, I never would have predicted in my lifetime that I will see him perform live in an arena. I encourage everyone reading to go buy tickets to Steve Winwood in an effort to show Steve how truly valued he is as a phenomenal artist from our beloved 80's. His shows need to reach Sold Out status! 20 concerts: July 30 - August 30, 2024.

A lovely song written about Valerie Carter, a great singer with a great voice, who in fairly recent years sang backing vocals on all James Taylor's tours and albums. She got back into drugs during a low period in her life and Taylor supported her throughout, appearing at her drug rehabilitation ceremony. She passed away of a heart attack in 2017. why don't we have good songs like this anymore? i'm dead tired of hearing about drinking, cars, money, sex and whatnot. i love their beats and music (sometimes) but the content is old. We need more guys like John Lennon, Steve Winwood, and other greats from the old days around. back when love was from the heart and wasn't synonymous sex (as far as today's music goes). i know some songs by today's artists are good like this but we need more.
@rickesh28
@rickesh28 9 лет назад
You can't generalise music like that. According to you, music now has all these references to alcohol, money and sex, but you're forgetting that music has ALWAYS had references to all of these. ***** Don't go on about the 'wrong generation' shit I am only 36!! I have listened to a lot of modern music actually and whilst there are some that don't mention money, sex or drugs, they are very few and far between! I appreciate people who are able to write their own music and do it well like Adele, not people who just produce random noises from a synthesizer that is on a loop! There is nothing remotely musical about that!
@Ineddiblehulk
@Ineddiblehulk 6 лет назад
Oh FFS really? "Music was better in my day". You should be embarrassed spurting such cliched claptrap with a straight face. Even Alvin and the Chipmunks, the animated series, pointed out the moronic hypocrisy of this sentiment in the 80's and that is HARDLY a bastion of social criticism. If you think music today is rubbish, that says more about you than music; you're not looking hard enough (read 'at all') and you mistake music that 'you like' as the only material with merit. Neither make for a very robust opinion.

Eric Prydz sampling this was genius because this song is epic
@ShadowSliph
@ShadowSliph 4 месяца назад
Fun fact, he didn’t actually come up with that sample, it was Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk fame. Bangalter and DJ Falcon had a duo act called Together and they played it during a live set, a recording of which had gotten around in DJ circles. Ministry of Sound knew about it and wanted to release it because it’d be a huge hit but the duo said no, mainly because they hadn’t cleared the sample. So MoS basically plucked Prydz from their stable and said “remake this”, then got Winwood in to re-record the song because he didn’t own the masters anymore. Prydz has since come out and said he hates the song because it’s all he’s known for now and it’s not at all his sound.

But others heard the track and then labels wanted and it hired Eric Prydz to do it.

It’s incredible how music can take you back to a place that you forgot. I was 6 years old when this came out. I still know all the words to the whole album. Yet, I forget my kids names 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

I was born in 1984, my father died the same year. This song came out in 1987, and I remember always loving it because it had my name. And I always thought of it as Steve had a thing for Valerie, but now hearing each and every lyric at age 40, it takes on a whole new meaning for me. I even took jazz class for my whole childhood. Always had a hard time connecting with him being that we never met. Thanks Steve❤ 😭❤️💖🤍🥲

@@robertsimon5869 I totally agree with you. Steve Winwood is multitalented...not only a unique vocalist and songwriter but also a multi instrumentalist. He has such an extensive body of work that defies description. It often seems that our most prolific and distinctive artists have more low-keyed careers in spite of their towering talent. Thanks for your comment. Blessings to you & all.

Always bothered me that this song never got as big as some of Winwood’s others. It’s really one of his best compositions. Deserves more covers than it has.

He played most if not all the instruments on all of his solo albums. That is really a big deal in my book. Saw him live several times in his solo heyday. He was nothing short of fantastic live ..... a true perfectionist.
