Steve Wright, the radio legend, is said to have "died of a broken heart" after being let go by the BBC, according to friends.
He struggled to cope with being removed from his Radio 2 afternoon show, which he had hosted for 24 years.
The decision to end his popular show in 2022 sparked backlash against the BBC boss responsible for the changes. Helen Thomas, in a tribute, described Steve as "second to none."
Steve, aged 69, was found dead in his London flat on Monday, and his death is not considered suspicious.
Mike Graham speaks with The Sun's TV critic Ally Ross on the backlash the BBC have faced since the DJ's passing.

`Died suddeny` after years of medical neglect. Ask me? Even paid privatley which I could not afford for an angiogram. Considerable stenosis but Dr. Lipkin at the Wellington London fobbed it off. Cut forward. 2024 a carotid artery ultra sound has left me with deafness left ear. The reason according to HARVARD medical, `Anyone suffering with stenosis and having a carotid ultra sound should take care as they might develop deafness`

Had Steve Wright been on a commercial radio there would have been no disastrous decision to end his Afternoon Show, possibly the best of its kind in the UK. It was no mean feat running a popular radio show for 40 years and it only got better and better, the very, very best. It was a mystery to me why he didn’t quit the BBC completely there and then, take a well earned rest and break and then resume his popular Afternoon Show format with the likes of Virgin Radio, Greatest Hits Radio etc. Who would have snapped him up in a heartbeat, it would have been a win win for everyone. All things have a cycle and a forty year run is certainly good going but if the public still want the product and Steve was more than happy to continue with his team then it would have just been wonderful. Steve left a legacy to be proud of caring about the quality and his listeners as we cared about him

Paul Gambergini was interviewed this week and stated him and Steve were due to have meetings with BBC bosses this week regarding the new digital Radio 2 oldies channel and I would imagine the plan was to have Steve do the afternoon show on there. He said when he first announced his departure that the plan was to always do more podcast style shows and other projects. I find the whole narrative a little much, how many people in media can say they had work solidly for other 40 years?
@ShanghaiRooster

Paul also said that Steve was offered very big money to move to a commercial channel but turned them down as he wouldn't have been allowed by them to do his show as he'd done it for so many years at the BBC. As he said, its not just about the name on the packet.

Grown adults with brains acting like this. This pursuing the cult of youth, thing, people under 40 listen to the radio still? Thought the whole point of radio was, because we can't see them, their ageing process didn't 'bother' us so much as anyone on TV screens or in shite music videos. except, bullshit, cos no matter how ancient crap like madogga gets, you all still love that cancerous cretin anyway. The level of delusion required to make a post mortem report on someone, when they were not even there is staggering. I saw Steve Wright speak when he had found out that after 40 + years they wanted something/someone different in the afternoon show. He said that he understood and that it was time for him to try something different and it was right that someone else should have a turn on the afternoon slot. Are people forgetting it was the BBC that gave Steve the platform to entertain us for over 40 years? Are people forgetting that Steve still worked for the BBC and indeed had just done his show on Sunday before he sadly passed away that night? @bordersw1239 I was 25 when Matthew Bannister made those changes & while I certainly found the smashie & nicey image a pain in the arse, he shouldn't have been so cavalier in the way he did it. I do agree that having an old fogey playing chart hits is ridiculous as they should be nearer to the record buyer's age. The only "old" DJ's who had their finger on the pulse for new music was the late, great John Peel & Anne Nightingale. If Bannister had got more smarter music-loving young DJ's, such as Pete Tong & Trevor Nelson, the transition back then would been better. Unfortunately a lot of the replacements were more interested in their egos & the music took a backseat. Indeed Radio 1 felt like it were for short-term trendies rather than long-term enthusiasts

I hardly listen to BBC Radio 2 any longer having listened to it for over 30 years. There are plenty of other radio stations for the young and more with it listeners. It’s both interesting and unfortunate to see this particular school of thought so widely reported and it’s something which came to me quite early on as this sad news originally broke. I’m 62 now and I’d listened to Steve as far back as the ‘Read and Wright’ days (which no-one seems to have mentioned) though less so recently simply because the BBC have in effect turned Radio 2 into what I’d always perceived Radio 1 to be! I’ve said for some time now that the relentless pursuit of the younger audience has somehow left the Beeb with nothing relevant to me (except perhaps for Johnnie Walker) so as a result, my ‘go-to’ has become Planet Rock. I can’t help thinking that maybe the BBC radio management are all too young to be familiar with Harry Chapin’s ‘WOLD’ or Mark Germino’s ‘Rex Bob Lowenstein’ but they’ve certainly made both a reality…!!

hold on Super Mario had worked for the BBC for over 40 years, that's a good run for anyone in any job, the BBC has a huge problem with new listeners and viewers not signing up, so when theylet go of a man who became an OAP 15 years back his death is their Fault, no one dislikes the BBC more than me but blaming them for Mario's death is weird, he lived alone, drank too much, had a terrible diet, donna kebabs and pizzas were his atple diet according to him, by his own admission never exercised, I'm amazed he was still alive TBH, he was past his best at work and in private life, if his family had taken more care of him perhaps he would be still alive but it's easier for them to blame the firm he used to work for, I didn't see anyone having such sympathies for the coal miners, shipyard workers or steel foundry workers when they all lost their jobs, and many of them were died as soon as htye signed on the dole, (regular exceris kept them alive and a sedentry life killed them off quickly) not one person cared about any of them,
