My composition teacher told us that its a good idea to write for instruments that you don't play, because you don't know what the proper technique or what the general guidelines are. When you don't have any preconceived notions of what it should sound like, you can end up creating some genuinely unique and original stuff.

This series of short videos you are providing are excellent! I have gotten so much out of them, and I think it is, in part, because they are being presented in small increments, one idea/concept at a time, so I can think and ponder about what was said instead of trying to remember several ideas/concepts all at once. This one was very cool, as I am fascinated with the creative process. I was very interested in Mr. Wilson's comments and ideas today on creativity, and how to get the process moving. His comment that "[s]ometimes proficiency can be a block to the creative process" got me thinking, as well as when he talked about an amateur as someone who does what they do because they love what they do. Thanks so much for sharing all of this! You always get me thinking and making connections with all of your content. 🙂🙏🙏🙏

I've been working on this track for my debut album. The last track used to be very diatonic with lots of bVI, bVII, and i chords for 13 minutes. I've been reworking it, and came up with a new chord progression for the verse, but also went out of my comfort zone to write something similar to Periphery, by playing chords and melody simultaneously while sliding and moving across the fretboard, it turned out pretty cool. For the prechorus, I combined two chord progressions from my other songs and added a part inspired by Imperial Triumphant, they make eerie music by taking chord shapes and moving them across the fretboard. The only diatonic part left is the chorus. It used to be in Drop-A on a 7, but it's now solely on a 6-string in E Standard which is out of my comfort zone because I'm used to 7/8 string guitars. It's now closer to 5 minutes and a lot more interesting, all it took was getting out of my comfort zone.

I've spent my life being a fundamentalist of this approach, and resultantly I have hundreds, even thousands of recordings where something kind of inspiring is happening in the moment, but something is always unlistenably out of the pocket, and everything is out of tune, and only about half of that out of tune is meanigfully microtonal, and none of it is mastered so you can only even hear the thing that's supposed to be inspiring about it if you listen patiently in headphones, and my existence is a house full of invisible and dead exotic birds, and there sure are some beautiful rotten feathers in there, if you're unusually willing to put up with rotten feathers, amongst the piles and piles and piles of invisible and dead and rotten birds, piled atop of piles of real and visible guitars in dead condition, with strings I can't bring myself to change, and no one is, and I don't know man.
