He's being re-rated and viraled by the youtube now though so he's making an unexpected comeback. Thee best. I have made memes with some of his one liners and had a lot of people thinking that I wrote it. haha. millenials and gen-z
I was 18 in 1985. My baby sis and I thought SW was the most funniest, brilliant and wittiest comedian ever. Can't believe it's been over 30 years and I still come back to this all the time. It's all still relevant and relatable and it's now 2023. Nobody even comes close to this man's comedic genius. King of dead-pan, the one-liners and smart as a whip! His delivery is perfect! And that memory is unbelievable! Thank you SW for always making me laugh!
Except that I kept thinking of jokes that he hadn't told. "I've been doing some work at home, putting in a skylight. The people in the apartment upstairs are really ticked off." "We had a swimming pool on the 27th floor. You wouldn't believe how deep it is." "When you shoot a mime, do you use a silencer?" "When I was a kid I didn't have a toy train, I had a toy subway. You couldn't see anything. Every now and then you just heard a rumble." and many more.
@@brandonb3273 An exhausted person tends to be silent anyhow & this tendency is shared by one killed by a gunshot, whether or not the gun has a silencer.
What I like most about him, is he's so different than everyone else. He doesn't let you know when he's said the punchline, because his whole routine is so monotone, that you really have to think about what he just said. He essentially has no "delivery." To me, it's funny that he can do the whole thing without so much as even cracking a smile. He's like a comedian that sounds like he's depressed.
Wow! All I can say is WOW..How does he do it? The incredible wit, the cleverness, the originality..the memory..all dead pan. A brilliant man. He will go down in comedy history. Each time I listen I am amazed. Steven Wright you rock my world.
Hilarious one-liners throughout. 48 min set, about 210 jokes = roughly 4 jokes a minute. How’s he remember all those? Great delivery, and the understated physical humor. (Home sick with a cold... bored... yes, i counted.)
his trick is to use common phrases like "used" and then adds something that isnt possible like "paint". and "batteries not included" with a pack of batteries lol. its GENIUS!
This was on BBC TV in about 1988/9 and its still fresh, can't believe how many of his jokes I've used over the decades - its like his whole set went into my subconcious. Classic!
Was fortunate to see him perform once here in Atlanta. I like his comedic timing similar to Emo Phillips whom I've had the good fortune to see multiple times.
I remember this show. 1985 i graduated high school. It was an HBO special. I never laughed so much and so hard that night. Brilliant comedian. Steven Wright is one of the all-time greats.
Not going to lie, this is the first time seeing Steven Wright's comedy. And his bit about why the alphabet is in its order and question if it's because of the song blew my mind.
25:27 I just rememeber after all these years about calling the theather to find out what's playing 😂. This whole special is genius. Wright is a one of a kind legend
This man has the gift that many comedians haven't achieved yet. Many had failed, many has refused they failed. Yet, Steven Wright continues to deliver the vast clean humor that makes us double over with laughter.
He hits you with the absurdities rapidly, and according to my accountant that adds up to a lot of laughs. Much faster than the old standard of a laugh a minute. I mean this guy barely gives you time to breathe. I love him, and hate him for the lack of oxygen he causes and the pain in my cheeks and stomach. Mt Rushmore.
The whole time I slowly realized who Mitch Hedberg got his inspiration from. Soon as he pulled out the guitar I immediately realized who Demetri Martin got his inspiration from.
It's been almost 30 years since I've heard this, and i still remembered most of it. This is simply brilliant, hilarious stuff, but as far as I know this is all of the material he ever had. I'd love to hear more from this genius.
Thanks for posting. This brings back OLD OLD memories of when we first got a VCR. It was one of the first programs I recorded to VHS. I was about 12 years old.
+Regz Zuse I couldn't stop laughing at the fact that where he lives fits perfectly to how he portrays his life. Sleeps on a mattress on the floor, the way he brushed his teeth and everything I lost it
I was about 22 years old when I Steven Wright for the first time in this show. It opened a whole new world of humour for me. My comedy heroes growing up were Spike Milligan and Kenny Everett and Steven joined that pantheon for me.
I think Spike would probably be the only comic to be able to match Steven Wright in the absurdity and surrealism stakes. Some Goon shows are like a polite fever dream.
They all laughed when I sat down at the piano. Well, that piano is now headlining the "A minor Walked Into A Bar" comedy festival and has a Comedy Central pilot in production!
Bob Monkhouse once said. As a kid I wanted to be a comedian and they all laughed. At the height of his success he added. Well they're not laughing now. Good line.
Buzz Garrison no comedy acts are spontaneous. Otherwise they would not be funny. Even Robin Williams whose act seemed like one long spontaneous rant was painstakingly scripted and rehearsed.
He built up a live auditorium career which is quite lucrative and successful. The hardest thing in stand up and television is you burn through so much material.
He has a lot of irony in his act...and a lot of observational humor and a HEAP of sarcasm. :) He is what we call here in my family "a professional smart ass"...he comes up with funny things on the fly. I admire him for his quick wit. I think he has to be one of the best comics there ever was. :) I can watch him over and over and never get bored of his talking. That deadpan look and that monotone voice is what makes his act so darned funny!
I'm so happy to say, I've seen Steve at Ontario Place , outdoor show. He was great, I love this guy. Sooo dry, and his wit is unique. Take care Steve. ,

mitch wasnt a ome liner, its just he had that same brain for comedy like.......mitch said maybe bigfoot is blurry, that mean photographers arent wrong, im not afraid of bigfoot im afraid there is a big blurry creature walking along the countryside, thats the same type of comedy but completely different at the same time, hes not a one liner
I love allot of comics who use profanity or really dark jokes, but I love how Steven and Mitch Hedberg could still make dark jokes without profanity, very smart, and alot of it was their delivery
In an earlier time, using "dirty" jokes in your act was called "going for the easy laugh", as they always guaranteed laughs from the audience. Certainly Robin Williams was quite blue in his humor, but he was also a comic genius who made his appearances complete in a way that the blue humor added to the enjoyment of it. Steven Wright's humor is also unique, and it's uniqueness works without making it blue. Anybody can get up and tell dirty jokes, but it doesn't guarantee you really have talent.
This is just "rapid fire" comedy. His acts are so densely packed with jokes; other comedians would have made 3 shows out of one of his! I mean, you aren't done laughing at one of his jokes and he has already told two more! Then you have to pause and laugh at what you missed coz otherwise you'll miss more. They keep coming! xD
Aww, that was both so sweet of HER to KNOW you'd like and appreciate this thoughtful gift....and YOU for keeping and cherishing it. I, likewise, pre-Internet had bespoke T-Shirts and pin-back buttons made for my loved ones AND myself. I intentionally chose phrases and words which were appropriate for the individual...very obscure (yet HILARIOUS). Phrases or words which were ~ in reality ~ litmus tests to "winnow the chaff" of humanity. On VERY RARE OCCASSIONS, a complete stranger would espie a pin-back button (on a steampunk hat I wear all the time) and/or GLANCE at a T-Shirt....and ROAR WITH LAUGHTER....i instantly knew he and I could be/would be FRIENDS. It was surprising to me, in retrospect, how few WOMEN reacted POSITIVELY/burst into GENUINE, uncontrollable laughter.... and how many men (comparatively) "got it"....but in my experience MEN (in general) possess far more non maliscious senses of humour and LOVE intelligent humour. Countless people ~ to think of this now ~ ASKED me to, please, EXPLAIN the joke...and I DID (and many more of these people laughed,)...but I do NOT recall my ever becoming friends with THEM. ONLINE GAMING ~ again ~ rare individuals will EXCITEDLY reference the literary significance of my GAMER TAG and/or WRITTEN QUIPS...again....ironically MOST PEOPLE are ASTONISHED to thereafter learn I am FEMALE. Men and women BOTH assume I am a DUDE❤ A shared sense of humour is a lovely thing.
I first heard this guy on the TBS Disaster Area bumpers. "What's the square root of a bowl of oatmeal? How much do the daydreams of a butterfly weigh?".
He is the perfect Gumbo of funny asf , thought provoking , Unique , Genius . Never seen anyone like his brand of Comedy & more than likely never will .
