After digitising my old Super 8mm film collection I came across this long forgotten footage of the 1980 Stevenage Carnival - apologies for the copy quality and the (nonexistent) camerawork.
Nearly 50 floats, 4 marching bands, Stevenage Carnival Queen Debbie McKechnie and Miss Anglia Delia Moth took part -- with the Rugby Club and Round Tablers (dressed in Victorian garb) going for "saturation coverage" on street collections both in front and ("new innovation") back of the crowds. Despite it being a cold day, they raised more than £5000 (with £2000 donated by the Corporation) - all money going to local clubs for the disabled. The prizes were presented about 5pm in the old Stevenage College grounds with overall winner for best float going to Warren Spring for their Frankenstein's Lab float. In the evening there was a fair at Fairlands Valley, a carnival dance at the Mecca and a firework display in Fairlands Valley.
