Cool story Stevie loves to tell at her concerts: She was driving around LA and heard Prince "Little Red Corvette" , she couldn't get the melody and tempo out of her head. This is at the time she was working on her album ,'The Wild Heart' . She had a song written, but for some reason she just couldn't get the sound she wanted. So Stevie decided to call up Prince. She said she was so nervous to speak to him because she is such a fan. Can you imagine Stevie Nicks being nervous to talk to then new kid on the scene, Prince? She told Prince about the song she was having trouble with. Long story short: Prince joined her in the studio, read the lyrics and promptly put down all the synthesizer tracks. That song is "Stand Back" which is one of her greatest hits. Prince asked that he remain uncredited because he was such a fan of hers that he wanted it to be a gift to honor her. So you can definitely hear Prince's music in "Stand Back". Give it a listen. Now she pays a beautiful homage to Prince during every one of her concerts. 🎹💜🔮

She felt that Stand Back sounded like little red corvette. And that she stole it from prince. So she called him up. He immediately came down to the studio and laid down the synth track and left the studio. You can hear little red corvette within stand back.

I completely agree! I'd say the same for Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt & Eagles (just to name a few. I name dropped them because Stevie was friends with them and they were all mainly from Los Angeles). It's a true testament that music was better crafted to be timeless. Sadly, most music from the past say 15-20 years doesn't have the same heart & soul put into it. Speaking of Fleetwood Mac, I still wish Silver Spring was included on Rumours, it's my all time favorite vocal performance from Ms. Nicks. You REALLY feel it. Gets me every time right in the feels

Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel were sampling with Fairlights. They weren’t sampling other peoples music if you want to get specific, but sampling has been in rock music for over forty years. Fancy that. and just so you know, I am old enough to have bought those records and they came out. Well, my mom had to buy them because I was only 15.

Fantastic reaction! Stevie Nicks came up with the phrase "edge of seventeen" after a conversation with Tom Petty's wife. Petty's wife said she met Petty at the age of 17. Nicks wrote the song after her uncle and John Lennon passed away. The lyrics to her songs tend to be personal and symbolic, which adds to her mystery. Just to clear something up, there was absolutely no auto tune in the 80s. Not until the mid 90s. Everything before that had to basically be sung dead on because there was no way to fix it after the fact. That's why I have an even higher level of respect for songs of this era or older when they're super tight sounding, because you know it's legit.
@sadwingsraging3044
@sadwingsraging3044 4 года назад
@falchulk Bullshit, an equalizer will NOT give you 'talent' or cover up for someone who has none. It can only smooth or crisp things up. The foundation MUST be correct. Autotune can turn a turd into gold.

@djjazzyjeff1232
@djjazzyjeff1232 4 года назад
@falchulk Do you even know what an EQ does...? Yes there was Graphic EQ, Parametric EQ, Compression, Gates, Reverb, Delay, Expanders, DeEssers, welcome to the world of audio processing. Studio Albums are not and have never been "reality" per-se, but that's not the point. The performance had to be laid down The Beatles revolutionized how music was recorded by multi tracking and recording in stereo and layering and all that stuff, and that was the standard until the mid 90s when Auto Tune was invented. 1995 is the exact year I believe. And then later came Quantizing of drums, so your drummer didn't even have to play in time, you can just put it on a grid and iron it all out! My point is, until the mid 90s, that stuff didn't exist, so again, when you hear it and it's laid down super tightly, that's the band just being dead-locked together with real human beings and FEEL, not with processing.
@Deathbird_Mitch
@Deathbird_Mitch 4 года назад
I'm going to add "echo/reverb" or just layering the same vocals over themselves to this discussion. Look at what they were doing with guitars. Same things were done to vocals, by some. I first caught onto it with Ozzy Osbourne. I was trying to figure out the odd texture to his voice. (Notice he has 3 mic's taped together on stage.) Since then I notice echo/reverb/layering in many performances. Stevie Nicks has a great voice, but she uses echo in her performances.

@@April-ng2kx I would definitely suggest doing some Linda Ronstadt. She broke onto the music scene at 18 and even then had amazing vocals, her early stuff was so good, Different Drum, Long Long Time that the record company formed the Eagles to be her backup band. Blue Bayou, Desperado, You're No Good...the list goes on. She did country, rock, folk, some blues type tunes, songs in Spanish, and even an operetta. There was nothing she could not do. There is a video of her, In My Own Voice, on RU-vid that talks about her career and the struggles she has with Parkinson's. You should watch it, it is too long to review/comment as it isomer an hour long. Willie Nelson was once quoted as saying "There are two kinds of guys in the world, those who love Linda Ronstadt and those who have not met her yet."

I'm hearing a lot of references to "80's drums." The effect that causes the distinctive timbre you guys are referring to is called gated reverb. It was invented by accident by Phil Collins and his producer in 1979. Essentially, they were creating a signal chain to shape a drum sound. A common effect to use on most recorded instruments is called a reverb (think the "echo" that happens in a large room, which can be digitally emulated). Another common effect used in recording is called a noise gate, which helps tighten a certain bit of audio. The gate "opens" for any sound over a certain dB level and "closes"--that is, mutes the track--after the audio dips below a certain dB level. Phil and his producer mistakenly put the noise gate after the reverb, which caused the big, blooming reverb to close shut in an unnaturally quick manner. This effect was used ad nauseam throughout the 80's to create a big, punchy tone without having to worry about long reverb tails muddying up a mix

@@hopetogether I don't think people should be so quick to dismiss some of the musical value of work nowadays. I'll be the first to admit that there's garbage being released now, but there was also garbage being released back in the day. I think the shift in recording from tape to a DAW, where one can try the same take 40 times with impunity, has presented musicians with a degree of security (verging on complacency) while recording. But I do enjoy some modern music just as much as the old stuff. Autotune is one of many innovative modern developments in plugins and other effects that, when used correctly, can offer a multitude of interesting sonic varieties previously unavailable

I recommend "Shadows of the Night," "Heartbreaker," "Fire and Ice," "Love Is a Battlefield," "Promises in the Dark" and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot." She married her husband, Neil Geraldo, the lead guitarist-songwriter-producer in her band, in 1982, but they have been together since they met in 1979 to record her first album.
