I was an 18-year-old college freshman still settling into my first dorm room before classes even started when the news came. It was a crushing blow. My single greatest musical regret is never seeing him live - I thought I would have plenty of chances to catch him in concert, since he was clean and sober and healthier than he had ever been in his life. His loss hurts me more than any other musician that has been lost in my life - so cruelly ironic to die in a damn helicopter crash after giving up Crown Royal and cocaine for breakfast every morning. When I get to heaven, one of the first things I'm going to ask God is for the recordings of all the music we missed out on because He felt the need to take Stevie Ray from us when and how He did.
My mother was in love with him and his music. When I heard he had died, I had to call to make sure she was alright. I can only hope that when she died nine years later, she got to meet Stevie in the afterlife.
SRV’s talent was mind blowing. It never gets old watching these performances and I’ve seen them multiple times. He was just so damned great. Thanks La/Che for another excellent Saturday with Stevie. 🔥
His incredibly fluid and lighting fast playing, young guitarists think he must have been playing with the lightest gauge strings, just the opposite, he played thick strings and had his string action set high, still blows my mind, how in the heck was he able to get such silky smooth licks, from piano strings, on a guitar? Dude could probably peel an orange with his left hand
His hands--like Jimi's hands--were very large, with strong fingers...He occasionally would actually tear off one of his fingernails, when attacking the guitar like he did!
Which is also what caused him to have super thick calluses that would start to or completely tear off...Stevie would just SuperGlue them back on & continue playing..Just a couple more of so many ways & reasons why Stevie was not only a G.O.A.T.,, But definitly a true bada** as well!!...R.I.P. I saw SRV open for Robert Plant in 1988, and to this day it is one of the best performances I have ever seen. I count my blessings every day that I got to see this genius perform at the peak of his powers.
I saw the same show at the Montreal Forum! He got everyone on their feet the whole time and outshone Robert Plant's show completely. I also saw him again as the main act and Jeff Healey opened.

Stevie was channeling as always. Some call it god or the universe but whatever it was it flowed through him to us in a spectacular and beautiful way. Every time I watch him live he gives me goosebumps and brings me joy. RIP Stevie, man you are so missed.
The last song SRV performed before the helicopter crash was sweet home, Chicago, and Eric Clapton Buddy Guy Jimmy Vaughan and a couple more great blues performed this song and they all said that everyone could tell that SRV was special that night The guitar that he is playing in this video is like a 1959 finder stra and it was his favorite guitar A reporter asked him his first love and he said it was this guitar SRV said that this guitar talked for him not back to him like a woman
I had the privilege to see SRV in 1986, with his brother Jimmy+ the Thunderbirds being his opening act. COULD NOT SIT DOWN!!! Once the music started, I was in the isle dancing through the whole concert! Stevie drives the vibe and takes you along with him ❤❤❤❤❤❤

It is the best way to start your day, SRV breakfast, coffee and a hike!! It would have been incredible to see him grow older but you have to appreciate the 35 yrs he was here. Legendary performance🎶🎵🎸🎼
Many years ago, I (a stone-cold Hendrix fanatic!) was driving down the road, listening to the local FM Rock station in Seattle...Suddenly, they began to play a version of Voodoo child, that I had not heard before...I was sure that it was Jimi!...but the licks eventually began to tell me that this must be some sort of lost, alternate version of Jimi, playing his classic....and then, a voice began to sing the words...I freaked out!...What/who was this person, having the nerve, and talent, to sound so much like my hero?...When the DJ mentioned Stevie's name, I rushed out to buy his album!...I could not, (and sometimes even NOW), believe that this Texas white dude could duplicate so well, Jimi's licks, and even take a certain style to an even higher level than Hendrix? But I have to admit it...SRV was even more advanced, and every bit as talented as Hendrix was. I did some research recently, and found that Stevie took up guitar at age seven!...and he was not even discovered until he was 27 (the age Hendrix died!)...so, he had a certain advantage over Jimi, as Stevie got to put in 20 years of practice, before being discovered. Hendrix started on electric guitar at 15, and was discovered at age 23...So he hit his amazing peak of technique, after only 8 years of experience playing!...We can say that Jimi was a more "natural born" player than SRV...but then again, Stevie's staggeringly accurate technique was even more polished, even more facile than Jimi's, likely due to having those 20 years to hone his craft. Stevie was clearly the best Blues-based guitarist of his time, the 1980s...and Jimi "owned" that title, during shortened time, 1966-70. I think Stevie was indeed, overall the best ever, in that small, but powerful group of Blues-Rock players, most all of them owing a great debt to Jimi Hendrix, for showing the world what was possible with the electric guitar...SRV respected Jimi to the MAX!!!
I saw SRV live outdoors in San Antonio back in the day. Eric Johnson (another awesome guitar player) opened up for him, then Eric came back for the last song or two with Stevie. It was so awesome! Dang man, I really miss SRV :(
I know you guys are famous and everything now. But I'd LOVE to hangout with the two of you and have some drinks!! I'm in the same boat as you guys were. Although I knew about SRV. What I didn't know was what kinda music he played. I just thought he was another Jimi Hendrix, who I didn't care to much for. At the time I was a Boogie Boys, UTFO, Whodini, Fat Boys, Run DMC, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash, Midnight Star kinda WHITE boy. Truly discovered SRV about the same time as you did. AND IT IS SOOOO F'N GOOD!!!! He is THE ABSOLUTE GREATEST OF ALL TIME, PERIOD. End of discussion!!! Now, if I can get you guys onto some Chris Stapleton.....WOW!!! Imagine for a minute that there was a musical artist with the vocal ability of Chris Stapleton and the guitar greatness of SRV......THE WORLD WOULD EXPLODE!!!
"Don't forget about Reese!" You damn well better not. Y'all ought to dig on the version of "Cold Shot" from this same show for that very reason - it's the rare SRV song where somebody else besides him plays the best solo. Even if you know the tune, you need to see this performance of it if you haven't. One of my very favorite sounds in all of music is a Hammond organ in the hands of a man who knows what to do with it, and ooooooh--WEE does Reese Wynans know what to do with it. Good gracious. Have mercy. That solo doesn't just get him an invite to the barbecue, it gets him invited to play at church on Sunday - and I don't mean the Southern Baptist church. One of the baddest solos you will ever hear on any instrument, but especially the beloved Hammond B3 organ.
Like the gunslingers of yesteryear .. Stevie Ray brandishes his guitar the same as they did their Colt 45's. He was .. and STILL IS .. BAD ASS on guitar! Wonder how many noticed he had switched out guitars .. again?
There are so many great players that I love and love to watch but there’s never been one that just blows me away and makes me watch like ARV did and still does. The sound, the power, passion, skill- just amazing - like a guitar Shaman.
Before Double, they were Triple Threat with Lou Ann Barton on vocals. When Stevie would quit his job in bands, the leader often said, "Good! ". Not the normal response. But they knew he was not destined to play in someone else's bad.

In 1982 we went to see the moody blues. Then this guy named stevie ray vaughn started playing. We went home after he was finished. Never have i bailed on a headliner, b ut it wasSRV!
Great as a three piece but Reese brought another dimension to that group; filled some gaps if you will. Great video reaction as yall really feel the impact of this rare talent.

Yeah Tommy Shannon the bass player, had been playing a whole lotta years with Johnny Winters by the time he hooked up with Stevie Ray. So yeah you could say he was a seasoned musician by that time. Also Reese Wyman's had previously played with Carole King in the 70s with none other than Eric Johnson at 17 years old cutting his chops. Just a little bit of trivia for you.
This band was SO TIGHT!!! Of course: Stevie was a MAD MAN on guitar...but, his change-ups were INSANE...and, the other band members were SO GOOD at READING HIM!! In the way they worked, as one: they remind me of the GREATNESS of Led Zeppelin....this band was ANOTHER instance of people coming together at the right time and will most likely NEVER occur, again....SO GREAT! How can ANYONE listen to that and NOT wanna MOVE?? The JAM a PARTY!
Stevie is the GOAT! Came from a working class family in Oak Cliff TX, his dad was a drinker with a temper. His older brother Jimmy started playing guitar by ear when Stevie was 8 or 9; Stevie got very excited and began self-teaching soon afterward. He idolized Hendrix and all the blues greats. The boys used music as an escape, played in local clubs and bands. Jimmy left home at 15 to pursue a music career, already considered among the best in TX. Austin had become a proving ground for young artists & after Jimmy settled there, Stevie dropped out of high school to join the scene, sleeping on pool tables or couch surfing while playing local blues clubs. At the famous club Antone's, he got to sit in with & earned the respect of the great Albert King, who remained a friend and mentor. Jimmy's band, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, was the hot ticket in Austin; but Stevie developed his own fan base locally and eventually formed Triple Threat, which pared down to Double Trouble. They picked up a manager, played venues around the country, then internationally. Jackson Browne offered them free recording time at his studio where they cut the tracks that eventually became their first album Texas Flood.(They sent him a horse as a thank-you gift!)David Bowie used Stevie on his China Girl album which caught immediate attention and catapulted Stevie's into celebrity status but he declined a world tour to remain with his band. Then Texas Flood was released and the rest is history. He and DT played with BB King, Albert Collins, Jeff Beck, and others. Stevie nearly died from cocaine addiction & booze, but got clean & sober at age 31 and his music hit new heights. The performance here was at Austin City Limits, 1989. In 1990 at age 35, Stevie played as a guest on Eric Clapton's tour and left via helicopter with members of Clapton's entourage, when they crashed into a ski hill and all on board died instantly. He's buried in Oak Cliff, and there's a memorial statue of Stevie in Zilker Park in Austin. Jimmy still plays and won a Grammy about 4 years ago. He also accepted Stevie's induction into the R&R Hall of Fame.
He was performing at Alpine Valley in Elkhorn Wisconsin with Eric Clapton and Robert Cray I believe with the next show in Chicago. After the show it was very cloudy with low visibility and was recommended that they NOT fly the helicopter that night and drive to Chicago. Stevie decided to take a chance and the helicopter chrashed into a hillside and died. Very very sad ending to a tremendous talent...
