SRV is the GOAT❤ he picked up a toy guitar as a child, didn’t read music. This was in 1989 and in August’90 he was in a helicopter crash and died at the age of 35. Eric Clapton said ‘When people who don’t play heard Stevie they thought hey I’m going to learn too… while people who played guitar after listening to Stevie thought they should throw out their guitar.”

Stevie is a unicorn. He plays like he's one with the guitar! No one guitarist can ever be number one because it's personal taste. SRV is one of the goats!

Fun Fact: In 1969, Vaughan's group opened for The Jimi Hendrix Experience in Fort Worth, Texas. It was at this show that Vaughan lent Jimi Hendrix his Vox Wah-wah pedal which Hendrix ended up breaking. In return, Hendrix gave Vaughan his own touring Wah-wah pedal.

The significant difference between SRV and the other great guitarists you mentioned is that they were rock guitarists, whereas, SRV was a blues guitarist first. Admittedly, some songs (like this one) are blues/rock fusion.

I was lucky enough to see him open up for Robert Plant in 88 in Toronto and he literally seduced me with his guitar and then he sang...smooth as butter. Little sister with Jeff Healey is a must my friend. Before he recorded this he asked Jimi Hendrix parents for permission out of respect and they were delighted and gave SRV Jimi's foot pedal. Great reaction and Peace out ✌️ ☮️ 🙏

This was recorded in 1989, what a legendary blues guitarist and singer Stevie Ray Vaughan was, this rendition of Voodoo Child is amazing. It's so sad to think that SRV tragically died in a helicopter crash in August 1990, at the age of 35. We are very lucky to have live videos on yt of his various performances including the wonderful Texas Flood (Live at the El Mocambo) 1983, so we can continue to enjoy this man's incredible legacy. Really enjoyed your reaction, Anthony and Black Pegasus. 👍😊

SRV is the greatest. I saw him 5 times. Was lucky to get to meet him backstage where he signed my ticket “SRV” and still have it hanging on my wall. He died August 27, 1990 in a helicopter crash. I was driving home from my first day in 2nd year law school. Listening to the radio, I heard it was confirmed he was killed. I pulled over immediately and started crying. I was destroyed. He has always been my favorite.

It's really impossible to say who was the greatest of all time. It really all comes down to personal preference. Now you can't deny innovators like Jimi Hendrix Eddie Van Halen, Les Paul, BB King and so many more that just completely changed guitar play. To me Stevie Ray Vaughan was the best at what he did. Texas Blues was his thing. To have respect from somebody like Albert King that hated everybody, Says-A-Lot. He's by far my favorite guitarists cuz he's stuck to his roots and he stayed with it the whole time he was alive.

I saw him a number of times in Austin. Once, at an outdoor venue, it started raining. Not only was Stevie there with his band, Double Trouble, but his brother Jimmy was there with his band The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Anyway, they had to stop playing because of the rain. Everyone stood there for 45 minutes, until it cleared enough for the bands to start playing again. I didn't see anyone leave.

People say differently, but I've been listening to him for decades (so I know), he is--absolutely--free flowing. He never, unless he was playing with another band other than his own or when recording, played a song the same way twice. This also makes some of his performances way better than others.

The doppler effect thing he does twice at the beginning of the song, is done by bending the note he is playing and slowly bring it back to the original note while rocking a whammy pedal back and forth.

everyone raves about stevie, and rightfully so, but double trouble , chris on drums, tommy on bass, those two are no slouches either, i consider them, at what they are doing, are every bit as good as stevie doing what he does, which is why they ARE double trouble, give it up for them too,,,,,,,,,,just sayin. the whammy bar is not a noise gate, it stretches the strings, stevie has a whammy bar from a left handed guitar mounted on his right handed guitar because where the bar is,, its where the pressure to stretch the strings is applied to the lower strings, instead of pressure beginning on the high strings side, more than likely because of how hard he plays, he goes through strings like a chain smoker, he uses a lower tuning a half step i believe, so he can stretch the hell out of the strings easier, better, faster, and further, and he uses heavier strings, cant remember the gauges off hand, but there again, cause he plays hard, breaks a lot of strings, and a fatter sound,, the man was just a natural beast..........

From an old-school guy, 65, who played in teenage bands in the '70's - In terms of lead guitarists, it's great to think of them the same as thinking of who's the best among rappers. Rather than who's THE best, it's more like, 'who's the best at doing what' type of deal. Otherwise it's into subjective apples and oranges. Kind of like Jordan vs Bird vs The Professor. Jose Feliciano does things on guitar that most rock guys don't/can't do. SRV's the best at what he does. Johnny Winter is too. EVH is too. Robin Trower and Roy Clark and...are too...

I think the majority would put Jimi at #1 simply because he was so innovative; ahead of his time. Like the Beatles. But it's entirely subjective; I think David Gilmour is not high enough on most lists. When you talk about the top 20 or so you can make a cogent argument for each and every one. Definitely check out Texas Flood live at the El Mocambo. It shows both his guitar and vocal skills even more than this one.

Who is the GOAT guitar player - well for me it depends on when I was listening. There was a time in my life when I felt Eric Clapton was the greatest. At another time it was Jimi Hendrix, then B.B. King and so on. Right now I have settled into just listening to many different genres and trying to grasp the different skill sets that are out there. Billy Strings is extraordinary, as is Trey Henley. But I will always fall back on my old favorites like Alex Lifeson and Jimmy Page and maybe Peter Green. In my little mind though, SVR ranks in the top 5 mostly for the way music just flows out of his instrument - he was unique and loved what he did.
