As a kid I got this show on VHS as a Christmas present from my father. Initially I was kind of disappointed, a relatively cheap VHS tape of some guy I had never heard of (yeah I was kinda spoiled at the time). But when I eventually sat down to watch it, it changed my life. I was like...what is this? How is this possible? Some years later he got me a more than decent acoustic guitar and the Eric Clapton Unplugged tabs-book with it. The Live at the El Mocambo VHS is still the best gift I ever got.
yes! my dad put the VHS of this on for me when I was about 14. I still remember watching it thinking, "what the....fuck". I had seen virtuoso guitarists before but SRV did something special here. stripped down, no distortion effects etc and just a 3 piece. Such a great tone too. My dad made me love this shit for life
I also got this (on DVD though) as a Christmas present from my dad. I too was disappointed, because I had been planning to buy the Montreaux album, but my dad's coworker told him to find this. Said he'd seen every concert video from SRV, and that this was the best. Still haven't seen/heard better.
This video changed my life forever. I was into my 4th year learning guitar and i was into metal and metal only. Then 1 day a friend brought by this video. At first after looking at the box i told my friend "you know i hate country" cause of the name on the box and the hat that i was looking at. My friend said just watch 1 song then we can do something else. Well just a few seconds into the song till the end of the video of everyone screaming for more i was paralized at what i just saw. My friend needed a snow shovel to pick my jaw off the floor. From that point on metal was dropped and SRV and blues became my focus.
odudi Nice story odudi! I play a lot of rock and alternative music.and i loved it,just 4 chords and Some riffs in between. Then i met srv ........ I only play srv from that day on.
Hendrix blew minds, then EVH, and then came SRV! This concert is the best electric guitar performance from beginning to end EVER! Any genre....SRV was channeling God or something!
I agree and I'm a dyed in the wool Eddie guy, seen VH 16 times and every time he Blew my mind...Was supposed to be at the SRV show at Alpine Valley where his helo crashed but couldn't go ,one of my Biggest regrets because I never got the chance to see him Live..At least we have recordings of his Genius...
He was channeling a lot of cocaine into his nostrils, I'll tell you what. Bro was a menace to society and an absolute legend to play this insanely well whilst probably a stiff breeze away from cardiac detonation.
I've often sat and just watched the audience thinking my they had no idea what they were about to witness the best to ever do it doing just about as well as he could do it he was so out of his mind that night such face melting guitar playing
@@travisprugh6347 I see it in all it's eargasmic sensations and am swimming in in all SRV's out of this earthly talent both on the guilty and his brilliant vocals.
When you get a performer like SRV, it's honestly hard to find a single show where he wasn't on the ball like nobody's business. This show, however, was on another level. Something was burning hotter in him than usual, and it makes a contender for one of the best concerts of all time. Incredible stuff.
did he or the band ever make the same kind of comment about this gig? I completely agree with you. glad I got to see him both times he played in Halifax, NS (!!).
Lol, something was burning in him that night for sure! Whiskey and cocaine. Agreed, this show is my favorite, I got the DVD and watching it on the 50 inch screen is great.
Scott Matheson Ive been playing for 23 years now , and just About now i think i can play Some great tunes. SRV has always been a big influence for me and i started off with the shuffles and Some easy licks. On a great day after playing at least 3 hours i actually am capable of playing a riff like he did. Dont get me wrong , im not saying i am a great guitar player .and i play with 0.11. Nevertheless i was happy. I finally did it☺️ Then i look at HIM playing , especially at el mocambo, and i realise what a one of a kind guitar player he was. Its just unbelieveble how he throws out lick after lick , bends the 0.13 all with such ease and soul , power and feeling. Best guitar player to have ever lived. I love you Stevie. Thanx.
like all good musicians, he didn't just play the music, he felt the music, its pure catarsis. It was this very version of the song on the friday night rock show when I was kid that made me understand what my grandparents used to say about their love of jazz, that you had to feel the music, and even though it's a different genre of music this and SRV (sadly after he died) open my ears.
I firmly believe that when you have an intense, burning desire deep in the pit of your heart to play the music you love, it translates to your playing style. SRV was and is a prime and perfect example of that.
Seen'em both,Hendrix will always be the master innovator.SRV will always be the master of the instrument.Saw him live 4 times, small clubs to the old Colluseum in Houston. Moved me and every girlfriend I took with me to tears of joy every time. Have seen all the greats, he's the best ever. Miss him so much...
I used to get stoned out of my gourd with my friends and watch El Mocambo in my little piece of shit town when I was younger. It was hands down the most exciting thing to do.
You know, there are a lot of musicians that I like which I'll never get to see live because they've passed away, and for the most part I'm fine with it, their performances are still here on RU-vid or anywhere else on the internet, and that's enough for me. With Stevie Ray Vaughan, though, everytime I see him playing live, I just wish from the bottom of my heart that I could've seen him, just one single time and it would have been enough for the rest of my life. He was a great player and he inspires me everytime I hear him.
Bro stevie makes me feel alive. He was put here to be a bad mamma jamma and that's what he did. Then he got sober abd died in a horrific freak accident. Sucks so bad
Yessir Like a railroad bar to the forehead. Boom Although, I was blessed to see him 5 times and he always opened with Scuttlebuttin. Either way, its an F5 start!
No shit man. Stevie was a fucking hurricane. I've never heard a live SRV performance where he doesn't basically torch every God damn guitar slinger you have ever heard or seen within 90 seconds! Everything he gave us was straight from his sole 🙏
Seen EVH, Zappa, Vai, Beck, Clapton, Buckethead, Wylde, Johnson, Satriani, Nugent, Gilmour, and many others. Nobody could knock an audience off its feet like SRV.
Once I discovered this show I watched countless times ! I think it’s the best guitar performance I’ve ever seen ! And I’ve seen a lot of them ! This show he was dead on it almost looks like sometimes he has to slow himself down so the guitar can catch up! I’m not a musician but I love music ! Probably sounds crazy but to me that’s just what it looks like this particular show !
Pretty much a Hendrix guy who always thought srv was sort of a cheesey version of Hendrix, but a few tracks/performances I’ve found in recent years make it abundantly clear srv was truly a sick nasty player.
I never understood how people said you had to feel the music with jazz as it never did anything for me, then I heard this on the friday night rock show and it made sense right away. Jazz still does nothing for me, but the blues, oh yes.
Im just wondering who walked around and picked everyones jaws up off the floor after every one of his live performances. I so wish that I could have seen him live.
6th grade in 1996 watched this on VHS.. My grandma made me grilled cheese with fruit punch daily.. Still love El Mocambo at 36 years old in 2019. Granparents and father have passed but i still love SRV. Hope my son likes his music.
Imagine that you were there by chance (young or old does not matter) ..... I am sure that seeing this changes your life, something that can touch your mind and soul this way.... for me it did and it was only a VHS tape
Never realized how much taller Tommy Shannon was than Stevie he's like a whole head taller - alot of people don't know he used to be Johnny Winters bass player
Epic!!!!! It's the only word that I can find to describe that performance at the Elmo. I was fortunate to have seen Stevie on two other occasions but the evening of July 11 1983 was like no other. Great full to have been there.Thank you:)
Stevie Ray Vaughan is not only a legend but..a showsman on what he can do..A great guitar player and performer which can never fade away..Stevie made it happen when so many just wish it to happen..U with me?
this show has one of the greatest sounds I've ever heard... He was such a great guitar player that even on his bad days, he was awesome! WISH HE WAS HERE!!!
One of the few things about Texas from 1958-1983 I loved, Austin before the rich found it, Stevie, his brother, and Willy and his 4th picnics. outlaw country and rock. man that was something to live thru and see in person, Glad i was alive to see it. Geez lake travis before it was popular. man those were the days. and of course we had Nancy Griffith, etc. music was special then. Thankfully willie is still alive.
No doubt one of the Best concert ever of of a genius guitarist playing a Strat . The first one for me being Hendrix at the Royal Albert Hall and his famous "STONE FREE". Listen to that one if you have the chance , and the sky will fall on your head !!
Saw him live 3 times. The third time was at the Benson and Hedges Blues festival in Los Angeles with Irma Thomas, Dr.John, John Lee Hooker, Joe Cocker, and BB King, in 1990. The man NEVER disappointed. I took off work and cried like a baby all day when I heard of his death on the radio. LONG LIVE STEVIE!!
Lol you wouldn't get away with that nowadays, naming a music festival after a brand of cigarettes. When I smoked I was always a Benson and hedges guy myself. It makes sense SRV would play at something called that. He always had a cigarette with him on stage. As you can see in this video. He puts it between the strings on the headstock to keep it in place. It's a tone-cigarette. Like tone-wood, cigarettes add brilliant tone to the guitar, as long as they're good quality cigarettes. OK that was a bad joke but you know what I mean
@@duffman18 All true duffman. And I actually dug your cig joke. 😝 Stevie was SO the man!! STILL one of my worst memories hearing that on KLOS morning radio, on the way to work in L.A. What a loss to music. God bless. ☺
I feel very fortunate. I got to see him a year before he died. 3rd row at Merriwether Post Pavilion on the “In Step” tour. Stevie and the boys were on fire. I will never forget it.
He was so freaking beautiful and talented he was his music 🎉after he died I could listen or watch anything on him because it hurt so much I miss him daily and believe me he keeps me going in my ear buds in my car in my house thank you Stevie for making music that makes my whole body move and heart sing you are missed and loved and no one has made me feel this music like the great SRV ❤
