Yeah, that Austin City Limits DVD is legendary, just so good... the difference between how SRV looks from the earlier to the later show is just stark... from eyes closed to being clean with eyes wide open and smiling... can't recommend that performance enough.

When Stevie was in this type of zone, seeing him play live was like a religous experience in a revival tent on a hot Saturday night down south somewhere. Stevie was the minister the scripture flowed effortlessly through, which allowed his guitar to speak in tongues!

You could not have hit the nail on the head any harder. My first two SRV shows were his last two shows. I was at Alpine Valley where that fog and dumb pilot took down that helicopter. That second to last show was one of the most spiritual experiences of my life. His performance was so incredible that Clapton came out and said "How in hell do I follow that?" And, then he said that Stevie was the greatest guitarist he had ever seen. It was truth. I love Clapton. And, I have seen him many times. But, my friends and I had to leave the show after Stevie's performance. We sat outside the venue in shock at the greatness we had just witnessed on that stage. I was touched spiritually by something during this song. I would experience this feeling only one other time in my 50 years and that came to me as I walked thru the doors of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. A flood of emotion is the best description I can provide to others. I've seen many hundreds of shows in my lifetime. Those SRV performances still sit alone on the top shelf.

I think Chris went on to drum for Kenny Wayne Shepard. Kenny's dad was Stevie's manager, as a young man he use to watch SRV play tagging along with his dad. Stevie was a big influence on Kenny. Check out Kenny, he's got some really good music.

Now this is more like it. No backing tracks, no ear pieces with click tracks so you don't get out of time. just 3 guys killing it led by the best. Lots of people are technically talented. But his lightening quick changes of tone and volume to attain a certain sound is unique to him. If you listen closely there are 15 0r 20 variations in the sound he's getting from that beat up strat. Not to much the absolute soul crushing emotion he plays with That translates through the guitar. The universe is not fair. Stevie was taken from us while Cold Play still walks the streets.

His older brother Jimmie said that Stevie would practice from the time he got home from school until dinner, then after until late into the night. As you can well imagine, his fingers would crack and bleed, so he would just superglue his fingertips and keep playing. Truly a phenomenal player in the truest sense of the word. I can remember vividly the moment I heard the news of his death - I had gone out to get takeout for lunch and I had just parked my car when the DJ reported it. I just sat there and cried.

Here's a couple more Master Classes: Life Without You (Capitol Theater) Mary Had a Little Lamb (Austin City Limits) VooDoo Chile (Austin City Limits) Stevie was a friend of mine...super nice, fun guy, great sense of humor but always, always a humble guy. He was a bluesman thru & thru (tho played some rock n roll). He had a guitar in his hand since he could toddle. I've seen him live many times in many places & venues. There's truly none better. Here's what puts him in the stratosphere above everybody else: Stevie can play/cover ANYBODY (He's studied, learned & played w/ the greats...of all styles...Texas Blues, Memphis style (B.B. King) & Chicago style blues...he spent quite a bit of time in Europe hanging out at pubs/clubs in London & other cities bc he wanted to learn European style electric blues. He enjoyed listening to all genres of music & always said that even if he didn't like it, he always learned something from it. What did he listen to on his own? A soul station on the radio!): But NOBODY to date has been able to play SRV style & skill. His sound is his own & is God-given. That's what makes him the goat!!😊 Enjoyed it guys!!👍

John Mayer, who is no slouch with playing the blues said that people couldn't just pick up SRV's guitar and play it. He said he would maybe last a couple minutes and he would be spent. SRV put out shows lasting a couple of hours. Drive to the next venue and do it again. By the way, the Double Trouble band were not just a few friends tossed together. The bassist, Tommy Shannon who was fantastic who played with the likes Johnny Winter and Muddy Waters. You noticed in this live version of Texas Flood where SRV would end a bar or riff and step to the mic as if he were to sing and then step back and go further down the rabbit hole. It took a great band like those in Double Trouble to hang with it in seamless fashion.

I would like to suggest Life Without You written for his friend Charley Wirz who was a mentor and helped Stevie in how he designed his guitars and who died of a heart attack. It's my favorite song of his and has a beautiful message.

Thanks for this. I'm not fan of SRV, but I enjoy of the headroom of his amazing gtr sound. I guess one reason got the sound is that he used 15" speaker elements instead of 12"?!?

@yabby6550 3 года назад
@@alanberg5575 I am a blues fan - I even wrote a short university level study of the early days of B. I can't say why I'm not a fan of SRV. Maybe too much Hendrix connection...Maybe it is that I like the most acoustic (roots) blues. Roots blues is real blues for me. - However, I like the guitar sound of electric blues early times and especially the British Invasion time (original Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green etc) Maybe SRV played too much compared to Peter Green to my taste... Anyway, because of the fandom of my amp designer and my taste I have 15" in my rig like SRV had. YEEEE.

@@yabby6550 Fair enough, Yabby. I certainly respect your opinion. Stevie's style may not have been everyone's personal taste. SRV's playing was sort of the blues on steroids---or HGH. But to me, he will always be the greatest, the way he combined unmatched physicality with such technical precision and control. He put everything he had into his playing, and his showmanship was as good as there was or is. Most important, however, was his kindness and humility. I love his interviews---particularly the ones from his post drug and alcohol years. Anyway, thank you Yabby for responding to me so swiftly. God bless!

Tommy Shannon, the bassist claims in his book, this way Stevie's best taped performance. However, just before the show, he had to be medically roused from a cocaine induced coma. With fluids, and vitamins they got him to the stage and this is what happened. Hence the more than most sweating.

Helene here. Hello gentlemen! I have a suggestion for a reaction. I don’t see where you have done any reactions to Joe Bonamassa, one of the greatest performing blue/rock guitarists in the world, and I think a solid contender for guitar god status. I think he is in the SRV mold, but he can also sound like Gary. Clarke Jr. or even Page, depending on the song. I would suggest as an intro to react to the live official video of “Going Down” from the Greek Theater. KILLER guitar, KILLER keyboards, KILLER brass…..KILLER band. I would provide the link but then this might get taken down by youtube…….They do that. You will both love it…I guarantee it. Have I ever steered you wrong? 😁 👋

This might seem slightly unbelievable but Alex managed to get into some sort of online spat with Joe Bonamassa. Not sure of details but may preclude us following that path!!

@@TheThamesmen OH NO! can he separate out the spat from the outstanding musician? Geez, wonder what happened. I’ve always heard that Joe is a very nice guy and he has done so much for the music community during the pandemic, raising money for out of work musicians online. I truly hope Alex can move past it or they can mend fences. If not, George, if you’re not familiar with this artist, please watch the video I referred to and tell me what you think.
