An interesting fact- Stevie couldn’t read music, but he felt it deep in his soul. He definitely left us too soon. I would love to see you react to his live performances of Texas Flood at the El Mocambo. There are some great studio versions of his songs but, in my opinion, his live performances are his best. I wonder if Stevie opens his eyes now and then while playing.... totally in the zone. Nothing against these super fast dudes like Vai and Satriani but Stevie is an Artist that let his soul flow through his guitar reincarnate in every note that came out the speakers.... totally different level of playing emotionally....

I was 23 when Stevie died. I grew up near where his helicopter crashed. I happened to be back home visiting my parents on that day. I heard the news on the radio and was in shock. I think the fact that it happened so close to home added to the shock. There are a lot of great guitarists and rating them is very subjective. Having said that, Stevie Ray Vaughn was in his own category. I've never heard anybody come close to his gobsmacking creativity. His genius was breathtaking.

I had the pleasure of seeing SRV 3 times.... first time was in a very small venue , in Bloomington Indiana. His Brother Jimmy and the Fabulous Thunderbirds opened the show. It was a great show . At the end of Stevies set , his brother Jimmy carried out a chair and a double neck guitar . Jimmy sat in the chair and Stevie , while over jimmy shoulders , played the lead part and jimmy played the lower neck , the rhythm parts. Then they switched ! You could tell that they had done this before. The last time i saw him , was at a big outdoor venue at Deer Creek , In Indianapolis Indiana. Stevie had just got clean and sober and was feeling great. The Sun was setting in the west as the moon was coming up in the east. He made a remark about it "God Must Love You Indianapolis".. It was one of the best shows i have ever seen!!! . Shortly after that , the world lost the best guitar player ever . Much Love S.R.V. "if I dont see ya again in this world , i'll see ya in the next .... Dont Be Late ..... Dooonn't beeee laaaate "!

Even though it's a cover of Jimi Hendrix song he played it different every time. He was a true Blues guitarist who played with a lot of soul. I got to see him in concert a few months before he was killed (1990). I stood there mesmerized the entire time with my jaw dropped (figuratively). I've been to a lot of rock concerts and have seen many great guitarists, but he was on another plane. I think of him as the Mozart or Beethoven or Bach... of the guitar - a virtuoso. So sad he was taken in his mid thirties. I'm grateful I was able to see him play.

No you don't write that. There's the main music writen by Jimmy Hendricks. But Stevie would always make a tune his own by putting his soul in it. There's always a part of a song where he just snaps and when he snaps, great things happen. And it's not always as flashy as this is. Take a listen to "Lenny" a tune he did for his wife Lenny.

Great question. Eric Clapton said sometimes while he's performing, he has to "stop" in his head to figure out what he could/should do next and that he never saw Stevie having to do that. He was a channel for the soul of blues, of music. This is a Jimi Hendrix song. Stevie asked Mr. Hendrix if it was ok to play Jimi's song. Not only did Mr. Hendrix give his permission, but he also gave Stevie Jimi' gear, his Wah Wah pedal and something else. *** Thank you for this Response: You are one of several who are stunned and don't know what to say. The beauty of Blues and Jazz is that you don't write it, you feel it. You can find several videos on youtube of the same song, and it's never the same. In fact in 1987, he did a better version where he played 1/2 the song behind his back. Stevie couldn't even read music. He had no idea what key anything was in. He heard, in this case listening to Hendrix do it over and over, and then he played it. His keyboardist, who is not in this encore, is the real hero. SRV played everything down 1/2 step to Eb, which is fine if you are a guitarist, but for a keyboardist is hell. GOAT, and under appreciated because he wasn't in a hair band in the 80's.

When Stevie plays he goes into an alternate plane of existence. Stevie couldn’t read music. This song was written by Jimmy Hendrix. Stevie was an admirer of Jimmy. Stevie channeled the music through his soul and into his fingers. He embellished on Jimmy’s four minute version of the song and went over nine minutes by improvising. I highly respect and admire Jimmy’s guitar chops, but even he would have been blown away with how Stevie played his song. Stevie is the G.O.A.T.
