I was at a Santana concert in Miami, early 90’s…Prince showed up at the end of the concert, more than half the people left, I stayed cause I was coming down from shrooms. Santana came out & tried to get everyone to come back in the concert cause Prince showed up & wanted to jam a little. It was me, my best friend & a handful of people left in the audience…and Prince & Santana on stage…pure magic. What a gift.
I think both Stevie Wonder and Prince are musical geniuses. Their library of great songs and instrumentals speak for themselves. Birds fly ,that's what they do.They ❤ the sky.
Amen. There is no doubt in my mind the greatest Super Bowl halftime moment was Prince singing Purple Rain....in the rain. Gives me goosebumps thinking about what a perfect moment in time it was. The show producers were so afraid and explained to Prince that it would definitely be raining during the halftime show. They asked him if there was anything they could do for him. His response, "Can you make it rain harder?" The ultimate professional. He left us way too soon and is sorely missed.
@@lloydertel1 well prince beats him tell me what instruments Prince can’t play how many songs did prince write I love Stevie but Princes talent goes above and beyond anybody
Prince was a consummate guitarist and musical genius. The song calls for rhythm guitar so that's what he plays. It's surprising how many guitarists that play very well are clueless when it comes to playing rhythm.
I don’t think the guitar ever actually worked, at least not before the video ends. Too bad, I’m sure Prince wanted to play a blazing solo, and I’d have loved to have seen it.
@@LukeMcCormick-cellear Yeah, it's in there the whole time after the tech replaced the dead cable. Prince is just playing a little bright sounding chuck chuck chuck-a-chuck rhythm. Check around 4:14-4:16 there's a moment where it stands out clearly. He's not trying to steal the show, just be a member of the band. I think it's great.
@@PhillipLandmeier Yes, Prince throws in a few fills. Unfortunately, Stevie completely drowns out the last one when he calls for the crowd to scream. They wouldn't have had a whole pedal board ready for Prince to make his typical lead sounds. But the rhythm "chucks" are classic Prince funk, and add to the song, making it dirtier and more danceable.
Prince just coming on stage and casually leaning over Stevie's shoulder and playing keyboard like a boss. He was from another planet, I get goosebumps every time I see a video of him playing.
So between Stevie Wonder and Prince on that stage is virtual musical omnipresence. Two more talented musician, song writer, performers, and producers have never graced any stage at any time IMHO, unbelievable !
There's a lot of bands that don't know how to think on the fly. Ive heard of artists wanting to join a band on stage and not being able to because they couldn't find an amp or something ridiculous like that. But this band, Notice them switching instruments and helping Prince plug in. They all know exactly what they're doing on that stage and know how to make room for others. Real professionalism right there. Not that I would expect anything less from a Stevie Wonder band.
That's the "stage manager" who handles all that.. Keeps everything in order "JUST IN CASE" not just in case another musican rolls in but just in case something happens with equipment. amps, mics, etc. they gotta be ready to keep it together. Most bands they're looking for groupies to collect for after the concert to " meet the band".. Not here...
Most of the first 1:26 is filling because there's an issue backstage. Imagine that in front of many thousands of fans, we've started, 8 bars till Prince, 7, 6, wait,: no Prince? Takes a moment to recover, band and even crew joining in the whole clap your hands thing... Ok, break it down to the drums then... Such composure under pressure
I attended the Stevie Wonder concert in Jacksonville in 1986. It was the best concert I ever attended. It started on time AND he sounded just like the record. He has so many hits, every song was recognizable and awesome! It was a pleasure. He's the BEST! A GREAT live performance.
I was fortunate enough to attend his "In Squared Circle" tour in Calgary, October 17th 1986 not quite two months after your show. I couldn't agree more with your comments as it was an incredible show! One thing I will never forget when Master Blaster (Jammin) started playing I realized as we were were sitting in the center of the arena on the first level that directly behind us in the stands was a huge array of sub woofers. With the band in the round and the subs behind us it was an unforgettable, amazing experience!
I mentioned it sounded like the record because SOME live performances and live arrangements of the songs sound OFF. It was a fantastic experience at the time. Luther Vandross is a close second. I attended his concerts 4 times back in the day AND he was unbelievable. A GREAT live talent as well. It was a pleasure.
Prince was the greatest and knew it but always had humility and respect for his forefathers and mothers. You could see it in the way he was onstage with them - some of which included Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Carlos Santana, Miles Davis
I'm so grateful to have been blessed to be a part of that ERA. We had countless unmatchable they supported each other with respect no Dissing or Murdering going on. And we could dance all night and day. My Granddaughter told she see how we was inspired to dance. I asked why don't you dance in 2022 she said you can't dance with Rappers style of music.
I love how Prince didn't try to play Stevie riff. Just vamped on something different and let the music come back when Stevie did. Pure class and music smarts.
I got the immense pleasure of witnessing this very thing at Madison Square Garden years ago, except it was just Stevie on stage , solo. He was playing this song when a tiny man came walking out with a guitar, in a purple suit and stilettos.👠Let me tell you: YOU COULD NOT HEAR A THING OF MUSIC FOR FIVE MINUTES STRAIGHT. That entire place went bananas and erupted in joy, screams and amazement. 😍 it was like nothing I’ve ever experienced. Simply one of the greatest moment of my life . 💜🔥🕺💫
So cool! ♥️♥️♥️I miss Prince! I love Stevie Wonder! My dad teaches me who is the best ever singers in the world. He owned his all albums. My dad is singer from Bulgaria Sofia Europe. This so far away from USA. I love this misic and all best singers of the world!♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Prince is a class act... It is my honest belief that he is UNDERRATED. This may sound ridiculous but dude owned the guitar, sang like a damn angel, dressed like he WAS fashion, and all that will being as humble as this video proves. RIP to the greatest preformer of our time
Eric Kestner I totally agree. His shows were just magic, and sadly I only saw them on video. Don't forget the man's dancing and choreography out of this world! :- )
I love watching how this unfolds....handlers get the word, they tell Mr Wonder, he almost starts then decides to vamp and give the drummer some, crowd cheers when Prince appears ....respect
Agreed, yet I'm guessing it wasn't totally spontaneous. Prince isn't just around staying near by and Stevie didn't know about it. But still it was cool how it felt that way.
Absolutely timeless, literally. The clip's runtime seemed to fly by, as true art happened before my eyes. When I thought it was halfway through, it only had 40 seconds to go...🎼🎹🎤🎸🥁
@@scottash351 It doesn't look very planned at all. Notice how Prince straps on his guitar and starts playing, and a roadie doesn't even show up to plug him in for about 30 seconds.
Awesome ... Stevie, Prince & Sheila E on the same stage .. That must have been a hell of an experience ... R.I.P. Prince ... You went on too young ....
Just came across this. We lost a enormous talent with Prince. Never really listened to his music except for on the radio. He had more talent in his pinky finger than most of today's artists have in their entire body. Could play any instrument ( did on all of his albums) as well as a great stage performer. R.I.P.

As a kid in the 70's, Stevie was my guy. My favorite jam was and is " I Wish ". Growing up broke , that song checked all the boxes. As an adult, Prince to me is the REAL KING OF POP, SOUL, R&B, FUNK and ROCK GUITAR !
If yall get a chance pull up Prince backing Chaka Chan live on guitar singing Sweet thing!! It blew my mind!! Love you Prince everything you touched turns to music!!💜💜💜💜💜💔
From a 52 year old white guy in Omaha, I've listened to both their music as long as I can remember! Awesome video I just discovered this moment I'm posting! Love this song!
Stevie Wonder is the best musician of my lifetime. Prince is a close second. These men understood music in a way that is unrecognizable to most humans.
what i find amazing is that as Soon as Stevie sits down around 2:52, he immediately finds the top chord that Prince was slapping. This whole thing is almost as unreal as it gets. one of teh most amazing songs written bu one of the most amazing artists, and then being joined by someone of equal stratospheric attainment
I just love how everybody is having so much fun! The horn section is tight and there is so much talent on stage. She playing the mess out that tambourine!
What a rare treat indeed, two legends performing together.....oh to have been there to witness such an event....genius in music is rare and right there we can see two of America's greatest
Man I was so into that but when it cut out I was like," WHAT!!!!! I WAS JAMMING"!! What a treat to the eyes and ears! Stevie and Prince!!! As far as Prince goes I'm not sure which is better his recorded music or his live concerts!!!! Either way that man was AWESOME!
This is a beautiful moment. Sheila E brought Prince the guitar and before she did I want to believe she told Stevie “I’m gonna give Prince the guitar and when he stops playing the piano you can go back to the piano” Stevie goes back to the Piano and immediately plays what Prince was playing. Great musicians/artists…that band…professionals/masters…geniuses on that stage man !
@@malikabenachour1366 you are absolutely right. But if you watch all those lists of the guitar heroes of the 80ies you read about Eddie van Halen, Steve Lukather, Joe Satriani or Ingwie Malmsteen. Rarely about Prince.
@@NeulichimKanal True. I loved when Eric Clapton was asked :"How does it feel to be the greatest guitar player in the world?", he responded: "I don't know. Ask Prince." :-)
@@NeulichimKanal indeed but Prince was quite a distance muso-culturally from those guys and so too from the aficionados of 'those' guys, I think then they both just didn't look that hard and if they did they couldn't get their head around it ...'hey guys, forget Satriani I've found the worlds new best ever guitarist'.
One of the best if not thee best guitarist of the last 35 years such a natural talent. Still remember watching lovesexy 88 live as a teenager guitar skills just blew me away.
I got a chance to attend a Prince concert in the 80’s; pure musical genius. And I’ve been a of Stevie Wonder since the very first time as a kid in the 70’s. What a musical legacy Prince left and Stevie will leave.
How the fuck have I never seen this before?!! This has absolutely made my day and will keep me buzzing for the next week. Also, how good were his band improvising, setting up the guitar no quibbles? Proper professional musicians ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
💜 O+-> 💜. A true Maestro. Webster's definition of a Maestro is an eminent composer, conductor, or teacher of music and Prince was all of those things so much more. ☮🕊💜🎶 You are beautiful, loved and missed ☔️
Interestingly enough, Prince forbade anyone from playing Stevie Wonder records around him while he was recording he debut album. He didn't want to be influenced by the magnitude and sheer force of his music. Which is understandable when you are trying to find your own voice.
Possibly the most innovative genius in soul and pop music at the time… I don’t blame him at all for avoiding Stevie, as difficult as that sounds. I hardly listen to new music anymore. I always get too compulsive with scribbling notes and opening browser tabs, burdening myself with responsibility to evangelize lovely vibes to others. The upside is that I have a little more space to develop and share _my own_ musical vibes… I hope.
This sounds like BS. Prince would be kidding himself to think that he could avoid Stevie's influence simply by forbidding his music during recording. Stevie's music has been in the airwave since the mid-60's, and Prince grew up with constantly on the radio. Once it's in your brain, you can't just get rid of it by not playing it around you.
I could listen to Stevie all day and even if I tried to copy him, it wouldn't sound anything like him. But I can see where it might be a worry for a master who can cop anybody's licks.
The crowd's reaction when Prince walks on the stage and seeing Prince smiling and having fun and showing respect to Stevie is just fantastic ... 💜 O(+> 4ever!
Oh I didn’t want it to end! I always watch the less famous musicians on the stage because you’re watching somebody experience a pinnacle moment in their career and life, a moment that they will remember forever. It makes me smile from ear to ear. Imagine working so hard for so long on your talent that you get chosen to play on stage with Stevie Wonder. Just imagine that. And also the same exact HOW IS THIS REAL feeling about Prince. PRINCE! Putting the two together must be mind boggling. I am so happy for these people. Total life goals. Imagine being that good at something! ❤️
The sax 🎷 guy and the clapping guy glancing at each other like “OMFG” and then clapping guy got to HAND A MICROPHONE TO STEVIE WONDER WHILE PRINCE PLAYED STEVIE WONDER’S PIANO while trumpet guy and piano lady dance. They are living this moment so hard. I would kill to hear these musicians talk about this experience. Fantastic. 💗 ❤️ 🎵
At first I was enjoying the whole aura of two greats on stage. But then I flashed back to Stevie playing "Purple Rain" as tribute to Prince and couldn't finish as he teared up. And well....It got to me.
Prince 💜I still can’t believe he has passed on. A gift from God. Unbelievable talent right from the start of his career. ‘When doves cry’ is the first time I recognised. Genius. Lost too soon Rip. 💜💜💜
I’ve said elsewhere that Prince always seemed to be competing (to be the best against other artists as well as himself [see the RRHOF tribute to George Harrison’s “While my Guitar Weeps”]), but here, he’s completely collaborating . You know who the mentor and mentee are. This is respect. This love. This is two musical geniuses...And that was an audience in an unforgettable night. I envy them.
@@AcidicMonkthat's not true. Prince is big fan of Petty. You need to read this article. www.nytimes.com/2016/04/28/arts/music/prince-guitar-rock-hall-of-fame.html
