3 years ago i left a comment saying how my band was covering this song, and how helpful it was to me at the time, and i wanna give a little update I was pretty new to bass when i learned this song, but the band leader wanted to cover this, and the distance by cake. Me wanting to make a good impression, learned those songs through a pretty intense trial by fire, but the band ended up disolving before our first gig. Members came and went, couldnt schedule practice, usual band shenanigans About a year after that i joined a punk band as their first bassist, and not long after we got a second bassist. after making, practicing, and scrapping a lot of songs, we have our very first gig coming up early in july, and i couldnt be more excited This video in a way lead me to be a pretty decent bassist about to break into a somewhat large scene in Charlotte NC
Yo I know everyone's tastes are different, but for my money this is the best bass line that has ever been written, period. I love this song so much. Thanks for breaking it down
Needed to learn this song for an upcoming gig, this was super helpful compared to most bass tutorials I checked out. Great funky line looking forward to playing it live!
If you dont have a keyboard the bass needs to play the keyboard part otherwise it wont sound funky at all. Honestly a good bass player slapping out the keyboard line sounds way better than bass/clavinet. The song works without the trumpet/brass section but not without the funky bassline
Thank you for this. First, no 30 second explanation of what you are going to do. Second, perfect balance between bass and soundtrack. Third, tab along with watching how you finger this. Excellent!!
@@RussellCatchpole You answered my question before I asked it, thanks! Was just listening and thought hmmm that sounds wrong octave wise. The problem is you also need the low Db if playing tuning down to Eb so you would need a 5 string anyway, no?
You play it in a slightly higher register, but I actually prefer this, since it makes it easier to pick up the notes. Plus, the overall feel is right and the notes appear to be very accurate. It is the best bass transcription I've seen for this song. Good job.
@@florainbass There's also a synth bass there in the mix, I think that does the lower register stuff. That would make sense, otherwise they'd be in the same sonic space.
@@nathanwahl9224 there's _only_ a synth bass in the mix, this is that part, or that is to say an arrangement of it. It's necessary to transpose a lot of it up the octave unless you downtune (or play a 5 string)
Ive been looking for tab with that really cool fill before the slide which for some reason i could never figure out by ear for a long time and now i finially have it. Although i personally play it on a five string amd play where it sits on the d# on the lower octave and the horn riff i play with a lower octave. But yeah brilliant best tabs in terms of which notes are right.
On the contrary! Never trust a musician who jumps around too much-why are they trying to distract you? Just play the bloody music-if its good, let THEM jump around ;-)
@@strayvideo yeah that's my dream show I wanna go to... 5 dudes standing still on the stage and playing notes. Not that I can get that experience from home...
hey man thanks for the clear tab and video! When I listen to the song the bass seems lower, but i do recall it is played on a 4 string stingray.. do you think he plays it like you but over an octaver?
@@AnnoyingOrange420 yeah, that's fair, completely get where you're coming from i just always believed it to be and played it as slap and personally it sounds nicer. (in my personal opinion)
Hey, floarainbass. Many thanks for your great Video. Would you be kind enough to share the Google Drive request with me? Many thanks. Great playing, great Bass.
When going from the d# to the e#, the d# is supposed to be a ghost note, not a hammer on to e# Would you slap me like a bass? Nice Video 👌🇨🇷 Love this ... any danger you could do it in E please (happy to pay).
Very nice job! Can I ask you a question? If I go to the RU-vid music copyright list I see that every single Stevie Wonder song is not usable in RU-vid videos. How can you upload those covers without your videos being blocked? Thanks in advance! :)

I asked you because I tried to upload an Al Jarreau song (Boogie Down), which according to the list can't be used too. In fact they blocked my video as soon as I uploaded it... But I saw on RU-vid an old Boogie Down bass cover with the original Al Jarreau track. I can't explain it...
a student gets a bass lesson and hes taught how to play notes on the first 2 strings then the teacher says "ok next week i'll teach you how to play with the other 2 strings". a week later the teacher then calls the student and asks when hes coming in for the lesson and the student replies "sorry, i forgot to tell you i cant come in today coz i have a gig".
