With so many abandoned raillines in Australia, tourism could benefit with rides like this

Yeah it should be set for standards. Call it the Australian Abandoned Line Riders (AALR)

Many years ago I worked for a large Company headquartered in Harrisburg, PA. Each year the Company would Commission a local central Pennsylvania artist to search out some of the small towns in York and Adams counties to paint watercolor pictures for this Company and they would be mounted on Christmas Cards for the management employees to send to many of our customers over the Christmas Holidays. The gentleman who did the picture has the last name of Kennedy. Many of these pictures were done over the years and one of them happened to be a painting of the freight and passenger building of the Railroad at New Freedom, PA. I am fortunate to have two of those pictures as they were also produced to full size pictures and hang in my living room. Many happy and satisfying years were spent with that Company. I'm now 90 and lovingly look at those pictures often and think about those wonderful days. Jim Hatboro, PA

Being from Montgomery County MD, we have biked the Rail Trail, that is the normal rail trail. I knew about this abandon track, due to seeing some old wooden freight cars on this line in New Freedom. One was a caboose. I still have those photos. They are gone now of course. Thanks for the video. Mike

So this is the first I’ve heard of rail biking. I have so many questions! Time for a deep dive.

You should carry a whistle, and an air tank. so's you can whistle a warning as you approach the crossings. it should be a robust whistle sound, that conveys respect. The drivers think hudson is coming!
@brian-t-
@brian-t- Год назад
You could have stop signs on the crossbucks.... you could rig them so's most of the time, they face away from the road. It's complicated, and expensive!

When my family rode the line two years ago, there was a flagger who followed the rail carts by highway and protected every crossing.

@@brian-t- What you describe is an early form of automatic crossing protection. However the required power supplies, track circuits, relay cases, etc, would make the installation cost prohibitive. In point of fact Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations require a STOP or YIELD sign to be mounted directly below each crossbuck. Why this hasn't been done I can't say,

Rail bike you say? How exactly does one obtain such a thing, and how does one know where and when to safely ride some rails? Looks like a good time.

Great video. I believe you are unconsciously making a groaning or sighing noise periodically that is being picked up on the camera. The Northern Central, btw for those who don't know, was a major PRR line that was severely damaged by Hurricane Agnes, which resulted in it's partial abandonment. I'm not sure if there is still a connection to the rail system anywhere. I imagine there is.
@evanstauffer4470

Yes. Their connection to the General Rail System is with Yorkrail (formerly Maryland & Pennsylvania) at York, PA

Where I live they've been tearing up the old tracks and turning them into bike paths that go for miles.

Guessing its all down hill from Stewartstown to New Freedom, not much peddling going on? Cool looking ride!

Not hardly, the railroad is a roller coaster as it dips in and out of valleys, there would be 3 uphill grades westbound as in the video. They are shorter then each uphill grade going eastbound.

Good to see the line getting used...I hope it can see locomotives again some day. Why not look at replacing the noisy Gas engine with electric bike technology, you would still have to pedal to get motion but the uphill sections would be a breeze....and quiet.

Fascinating. I have lived in that region and recognized where you were at only one point about 10 mins in. Right about here < 39.760012017663804, -76.62587478318385 > and while parrellel to 851. I drove under that underpass hundreds of times. ... will watch again tomorrow with a map. It would be interesting to know the exact starting and ending points.
