Still got my original Scout in 308. Can’t fault it. It can be a little punchy to the unwary shooter, especially on full power loads. T8 moderator was the one to get for the Scout as it only added 50mm to the overall length.
I like it, save for the bipod. Would be nice if there was a non-bipod version, but then I guess it’d be a different rifle. Anecdotal, but I know of one Steyr barrel (for an SSG M1) that had to be returned due to barrel erosion at the crown.
I would buy one for the accuracy with the factory ammunition of various weights and the way it cycles even though it looks a bit different to other hunting rifles. Good review.up there with broadsword comprehensive gun workout.👍
This is one of the rifles id like to have someday. Just because of the looks, its kinda ugly and beatifull at the same time. Lets hope you get to review the bigger calipers too cause id like to know are they as accurate as this.
I have owned a steyr scout elite in 308. It was a great rifle, very accurate and a solid action and 3 positions safety. The extra mag is also nice. But I can tell you from experience that that bipod is garbage and really lets the rifle down.
You have to know the history of this platform to completely appreciate it. It was designed by a former American sniper. It was ment to replace the m2 700 Remington sniper rifle of the U.S. armed forces. .308 was the original caliber chambered. The shorter barrel in the second version is for military suppression Hence, the odd ball threads. The 6.8 western platform amd it's attachments are meant for this rifle. Downside....it cost 3 times that of other precision models. Unless they can produce this for around $1000....it won't attract sales.
It has got nothing more than we used to have in the 70/80's. except more weight. In my opinion 7.5 lb is the very limit for an all up scoped rifle. I have always cut my barrels down to either 18", in 308 19" in .222 or 20" in a .243. So nothing innovative there. The integral bipod is handy in that format, but as I never use them for big game hunting they are just unnecessary weight, as is the spare mag. in my opinion and being of a fixed height is next to useless . The whole idea of a rifle in that configuration is to take a scope say of a 1-4 or 5 or 6 with a 24mm objective, so that it will sit lower and give better cheek weld. A large scope of the type you are using goes against the grain of what the rifle was designed for i.m.o. Looks bloody awful to boot!
