This is the first of my Stick Dulcimer reviews looking at what models are available to buy in the shops this Christmas and beyond. I have no hesitation recommending the The Mcnally Strumstic© to anyone, Bob Mcnally is a great innovator in instrument design, The martin backpacker maybe the most famous of his designs, but this stick is also a true classic, its economical use of timber, 1" square paduak!! with minimal parts is impressive. 10/10

You need to check the octave harmonic for the placement of the bridge on each string, you probably know all this as a guitarist but for those reading this who are not- this is where the fretted note half way is checked against the harmonic, the note you get when you touch the string above the fret with the left and pluck with the right hand...it gets more complicated with wound strings mixed with plain strings but at least get the lowest and highest string in tune

how thick is the top on these? From the pictures I've seen it looks thicker than 4mm. I have a long wide board of walnut that's 1/4" thick, think I could make the fingerboard and soundboard from one solid piece. I'll loose a bit of thickness when I level sand too but I think a thicker than normal soundboard will tame some of the banjo twang. My neck blank is quarter sawn white oak with a walnut center stripe....it by itself sounds pretty resonant.

That’s a little too thick fit a soundboard In hardwood. (Fine for fingerboard) My own stick Dulcimers would have a walnut soundboard of no more than 2.5mm 3mm in spruce. 3.5mm cedar. ;-)

@fastLane500 sorry, I wrote a reply but it didn't post. You would have to import the koa model from the states direct, bearing in mind the import taxes which will add 30% or more. The spruce model would be close to this sound. If set up well.

Why the Grand Strumstick and not the original GDG Strumstick? By the why Popular Mechanics had plans for a similar instrument back in the 1970s.
