Omg I have dermatilimania too!!! I will bite or pick my fingers until they bleed!! One thing that helps me is keeping my nails always done & keeping my skin moisturized around the nail! But I feel you! It sucks!!!!
Oh, you poor dear. Let me tell you, I'm the age of your parents, and I still have not found a fully effective way to curb the nail and cuticle destruction (I don't bite, because germs freak me out, but I tend to pick and cut). I was always told that it was a bad habit I needed to break, but as an adult, I read about it and learned it was more about anxiety, at least, for me. I've read that, especially if it started in childhood (which it had for me), it's a way to deal with and regulate emotions, and possibly stress. I notice that I tend to pick or scratch at rough spots when I'm anxious or agitated, and the repetitive motions help me, but then I end up with sore, and sometimes bloody, spots around my fingers and nail bed. I also do it if a spot feels too rough, and it bothers me a lot (anxiety again), so I pick or cut to make the spot "smooth", even if it becomes sore and raw. It was worse when I actually injured two of my fingers on some machinery last year, which led to nail damage, and, of course, I'm picking at the damaged nails so they don't quite heal properly, and are taking forever to grow back properly. I've tried pretty manis, which I got tired of quickly, then I tried just putting those silicone fingertip guards used by crafters, but they just kept falling off. I've simply had to find other ways of coping with anxiety that isn't self-damaging, but I know this is a lifetime thing for me, dealing with it. I did discover that those Match 3 online games somehow help me quite a bit, but I'm not always on the computer, and I don't want to do that for hours. Aromatherapy has worked for me, too. If I feel anxious, I have this scent locket that I just bring up to my nose to sniff for a few seconds, which helps to calm me down. But each person has their own thing, and you would want to talk to a good and understanding doctor about this. ❤

When Ashley mentioned your fingers, do you have dermatophagia or dermatodaxia? He mentioned it like it was just a bad habit, but you can actually get help to work through the disorders. Just thought I'd pipe up in case you've never considered these things! A lot of people have this and never realize it. They just consider it a bad habit that they can't break.
❤ My grandson’s Birthday is also August 4th. And like Ryan he seems to be able to just be old at almost Everything. He has High functioning Autism so he is Scholastically brilliant. But he taught himself to swim and dive and can Hit a target almost every time when shooting. Oh BTW he’s only turning 11 yrs old this year.

To wean off finger chewing, allow yourself a bit of knuckle sucking (no teeth allowed). No joke, if you can gain consciousness of it, you can probably beat the bad habit.
We all know he’s ready to propose but Joanna isn’t ready to say yes because she wants to travel and accomplish things before they move toward marriage, but that doesn’t make them less committed to each other. I bet they’ll be together at least another full year before a proposal happens!
