STICK WELDING BASICS - ARC WELDING EXPLAINED

In this episode of the Longevity Learning Lab, Bruce explains the basics of stick or arc welding. Stick welding is also known as SMAW.
Stick, the most basic of welding processes, offers the easiest option for joining steel and other metals. Stick welding power sources deliver inexpensive options for welding versatility, portability and reliability. Stick joins metals when an arc is struck between the electrode and the work piece, creating a weld pool and depositing a consumable metal electrode into the joint. The electrode's protective coating also acts as a shielding gas, protecting the weld and ensuring its purity and strength. Best for windy conditions and adverse environments.

Sounds like a fun day! If you get stuck, happen to have a question youtube isn't clear on(many videos, many opinions, many references as there are many ways to accomplish a welding task the "correct" way), give us a call to speak with our tech dept. as they would be happy to assist you.

I'm 74, when I was 11 years old. I was reading a hot rod car magazine $.025. in 1959. I saw in the back cover an electric arc welder for $14.95 !! Called the FOURWAY electric arc welder, made in Chicago, Illinois 🇺🇸. I saved my money, 2 months go by I had enough to buy it,. It took 2 months for me to get it. They don't ship as fast back then. When I plugged it into 110 vac. And struck an arc, it scared the "sh?t" out of me, as I never saw anyone weld before !! Later on in my 20's I became a professional welder. Welding sure came a long way !! Great Video. Thanks

"Power" is not the same as "current". Power (Watts) is represented as "W" , current is represented as the letter "A" (as in amperes), and the letter "V' represents voltage. The formula is W =VxA. Therefore, A (current) = w (Watts)/v (voltage).

Thanks. I've watched other videos and some of these people absolutely know what they are doing. But for the very rank beginner that is trying to decide what kind of welder to even start out with, you explanation has been simple, to the point, and easy to understand. I was advised by my farrier to just go with stick welding for the simplicity of equipment. No gas bottles to buy or haul around and one doesn't have to worry so much about the wind if going outside.

thanks for the vid , im a newbie to stick welding and was wondering , is it ok to actually hold onto the stick to weld to have more control or will it be to hot

Thanks for watching! You cannot hold the stick itself only the stick holder.
@usernamemykel
@usernamemykel 2 года назад
@@longevitywelding INCORRECT!!!! You can hold the stick like a pen so that you have more control over it, as when tack welding. Wear gloves and if the rod/stick sticks to the metal - be prepared to let go because it will get red-hot quickly.
