About the teabag toboggan ride down the stairs - we never actually SEE a gun in the guy's hands. In my mind, an innocent man in the wrong place at the wrong time never knew WHY he'd just been treated this way just for going up the stairs.

My father was a cop from 1977-1999 and I just asked him about his sidearm issue. He said they used revolvers in his department all the way until 1992 when they switched to Glock 20s. Great episode, guys!
@Etherman7
@Etherman7 5 лет назад
There's an LA Times article saying the LAPD allowed Officers to switch as early as '86, but there's no mention of mandatory change over to semi-autos for their department. Probably some time in the early 90s, I had a Professor who was LA county at that time and that's when they switched. Props to your dad for holding the line!

Also, that female cop had terrible trigger discipline lol she had her finger wrapped around that trigger in every scene when she was pointing it at someone. If anyone has ever fired a revolver, if you cock the hammer especially, you don't curl your finger on the trigger unless you are going to fire lol

As far as I know the police use of revolvers ended between the 80s and early 90s. By the mid 90s, cops were mostly using 1911s and probably Berettas. You can actually see that transition happen between the first two Terminator movies. I know some cops in the South still use revolvers, but cops in the 90s generally used semi automatics.

Chiming in on the gun debate with real experience: My father was a cop since Vietnam mom until he was forced into retirement from getting hurt on the job around the 2000s. He carried a 44 maximum with speed loaders on his belt until the department forced him in the late '90s to go to a Glock 911 (I think that was the model). Up until then, there was a lot of leeway between what a officer could and could not carry because it came down to whatever they were most comfortable with and going to use when it mattered. I remember jingle his bullets made in his speed loaders when he walked and the creek of the leather belt. Now we're from Alaska so it wasn't the only gun in the house we had plenty of others but that's what he carried on the job. I hope Kyle accepts my revisionist history. ;) Sorry, I mean Gun-Guy Kyle accepts my revisionist history.

Two things on the "Johnny, you're not that fast" scene. One, it was super slow and the other two guys had more than enough time to at least lower their guns to retarget. Two, the chief or whatever reacted to being shot in the leg before being shot in the leg _and_ without lowering his gun.

Almost all police officers have carried either Glocks, Sigs, or M&P's since the late 80's/early 90's. That's not to say some still carried revolvers, but in the early 90's it would have been uncommon. Private security guards still carry revolvers to this day, but that's based on preference.

Brian called it perfectly when he said the main characters moves look like something a more comedic, Jackie Chan type should be doing. We laugh at the “tea bag toboggan” for it being completely out of place here but, now imagine Jackie Chan doing that. It would be hilarious in a good way and probably be seamlessly intergrated in a fun fight scene. The main actor seems pretty good at his style of martial arts but, it just doesn’t translate that well into “cool action scenes”.

I think what makes me laugh harder than anything is those sticks are clearly practice sticks made of rattan used for training only. You might get one good blow in but they'd shatter into splinters and not do that much damage. Maybe that's why he never uses them!

The LAPD started issuing the Beretta 92fs to officers in 1986 right after the military chose it to replace the 1911A1, and most of the department had switched to it by 88. So yeah, Kyle is kinda right. I know that a lot of officers still preferred the old revolvers because of ease of maintenance, stopping power, and because they didn't jam. Plus, revolvers are much easier to use with blanks, just like pump action shotguns and bolt action rifles. But who cares when you have death sticks!

27:00 It's a little hard to tell but the "one for play" stick looks like it has a darker shade of brown painted on it, either in circles or down a spiral. I vaguely remember there is, or was, a martial arts supply manufacturer that made practice weapons painted like that (probably has more color codes for different kinds or somesuch,) made of softer wood; if it was a full-length staff it would visibly wobble and it would break if you tried to hit someone for real with it. So it's "for play" in the sense that it's a practice weapon, and it never occurred to him that maybe three people watching would know that.

23:40 that's early and late Jackie Chan for some reason after he got famous in the mid 80s (I call this the Jerry Lewis effect) dude was almost always a suave lawyer or cop and usually depicted as comically conceited to a point but generally a principled guy who will not let the main villain manufacture super drugs. I'm mainly talking about 3 Dragons, have you seen 3 Dragons with Jackie, Sammo and Yuen Biao? But yeah the like in Young Master which was billed as Jackie's directorial debut he's down on his luck and goofy so you were generally correct.. .I'm sorry, what were you saying? I'm just really passionate about Jackie Chan/. The Jerry Lewis effect is rarely seen but involves a goofy guy becoming a director and producer and writing scripts where he is the star.

Police forces have not traditionally had military grade hardware; for quite a while there simply was no need for them to have it. I'm not from the US, but as far as I know, up until certain high profile riot, terrorist and shootout scenarios in the 80's-90's, the police basically maintained early 20th century tech: revolvers, pump-action shotguns, surplus rear echelon ww2 smgs, bolt action rifles, and even lever action rifles.

This is set in Los Angeles where 40% of the population is Mexican-American, so it's just a matter of odds. Most Mexican-Americans speak at least a little bit of Spanish and go back and forth. Also, there are plenty of Mexican-American cops or with heritage from other Spanish speaking nations.
