I just used sticky stone to install cap stone around top of my ledger stone. I have smooth concrete as a substrate and the ledge stone cap is completely flat so it should make good adhesion. I also built a stand/ shelf so the ledge cap/ stone wont move while curing. I wrapped the shelf in plastic incase any excess stickystone wont adhere to the shelf when i remove it. Alot of thought went into this. I hope it lasts in the winter. Lol

Sticky stone is good for a rough look like that or cultured stone, but if trying to do tight work, have to use mortar to pad the stone to allow for the variations in thickness.

Somehow the sticky stone feels “flat” compared to the mortar. I think the ability to pad with mortar makes it feel more “real” by introducing variations, and making the blocks look level with gravity instead of just attached to wall.

Cost is big factor.. mortar is much cheaper

It's not much cheaper when you factor time into the equation. With Stickystone, you have almost zero prep time and zero after-job cleanup. With mortar, you have to have water, buckets, trowels, and other tools as described in the video and these all need to be cleaned up after every job or at the end of every day. With mortar, you also need to mix in small batches so you cannot work continuously as you can with stickystone. So after factoring the cost of tools, time, and materials; stickystone is cheaper for you and for the customer. That allows you to finish jobs quicker, be more competitive on bidding jobs, and do more jobs per year!

First of all your scratch coat is going vertical instead of horizontal. Sticky stone is better for cultured stone because it's lighter weight and more even thickness. The right product for the right application. My time is money the finished cost of the entire job is more is your actual cost not the particular material. And let's not forget the overall quality of your work how long it will last and how easy it is to maintain.

The X-77 Ardex product manufacturer recommendation for application is to apply the scratch coat vertically, not horizontal like you would with a typical mortar scratch coat. The customer wants what the customer wants and this is a way to satisfy a customer that wants natural stone. Thanks for the feedback!
