You are absolutely correct with the Merc @ 25:48 being very rare. It's a 560 SEC AMG. Part of why it's so rare and unique is the interesting relationship between AMG and Mercedes at the time. Some of you may or may not recall, that AMG used to be a separate tuning company that overhauled already manufactured cars. You couldn't order an AMG SEC from a Mercedes dealer like you can now (Well, technically you can't order an SEC anymore, but you get the point). You had to order a regular SEC and then put up another order with AMG and deliver your car to them for an overhaul. The process involved multiple mechanical modifications to increase the power and improve the handling, but also hacking up the body to give it the flared fenders and sometimes even repainting the whole car while they were at it. The conversions were very well made, looking and working like that was the way the cars left the factory. When you were too rich for a regular SEC, this is what you got to impress your friends.

Unsure if you've already done something like this, but I (and surely many others) would be very interested to watch a video about your journey in becoming an aircraft mechanic for the airlines. Watching through your series of videos has honestly made me seriously consider line maintenance as a potential career, so any insight you can provide into the process would be truly invaluable. Not that you are obliged, though! Every episode of Stig Shift is enough of a blessing as is.

One of these days, I’m going to sit down and make a very long video and talk about the path I took, and where my career led me. I would need to gather my thoughts and hopefully jog my memory. Stay belted! Here is one where ALL were belted and there were FEW injuries, way more dramatic, and damaging to plane, 1985. Plane dropped, out of control 30,000 FEET! On the 19th of February 1985, a China Airlines Boeing 747 one engine of 4 lost power, and due to pilot inattention, they allowed the plane to roll, then stall. Mind you, this plane can fly with ONE engine, and 3 were working fine. It was pilot error! They did not pay attention to speed or bank angle, while troubleshooting the ONE engine. Pieces began to tear off the jet as it tumbled toward the sea. And then, just when it seemed all hope was lost, the captain regained his bearings and leveled the plane - after falling more than 30,000 feet in two and a half minutes, they pulled out just in time. The crew nursed the crippled 747 to an emergency landing in San Francisco, and the 274 passengers and crew disembarked with only a few serious injuries. The media hailed the captain as a hero. But what was the real story? The proper procedure for dealing with a hung engine was to close the bleed air valves on that engine before attempting to increase power, and this probably would have fixed the problem; however, Wei was allowed to perform the procedure without reference to the checklist, and while working from memory he forgot to perform this minor but critical step. The engine did resume power, they went about it all wrong. Part, but not all of the horizontal stabilizer was broken off, but it FLEW fine, landed safely. That plane far exceeded it's design limits.

What I always appreciate about airliner redundancies is that these aren't just duplicates or backups but webs of asymmetrically configured overlapping systems. It would take multiple of failures of different types in multiple places from multiple causes to get to a catastrophic situation. And also, rather than binary failures there are degrees of capability degradation. Many people smart people have thought about these things. I especially like the Airbus hydraulics design.
@StigAviation

My goodness this was a good one Stig. Thank you for talking about the airbus Nose gear faults! My goodness how cool is that 777 built in test function? You would think the EICAS would be enough but that maintenance access computer is amazing!!! Wow!!!!
@stellarproductions8888
@stellarproductions8888 Месяц назад
You know the 777 maintenance terminal runs on Windows XP, takes a long time to boot up into the OS. But once its running, its solid, provides all the information that a maintenance engineer needs, to fix a plane, or figure out whats wrong with it. I saw him do a more thorough video on that terminal from start to finish in an older video, thats how I know that. But the 787 Dreamliner plastic princess has the maintenance terminal all built into the main flight computer, so no need for a separate terminal.
@StigAviation

I am very happy you enjoyed it, and to show you on the next one, the 787 has integrated it built in test functions into the EICAS 👍

I’m an airline fueler at my home airport, we have 35-40 AA flights per day. 75% are E170’s by Republic and Envoy, and there are one or two CRJ2’s by Air Wisconsin and a few RJ9’s by PSA thrown in there. Our mainline service is mostly 737-800 and A319/20/21 aircraft. I always enjoy learning about the fuel systems in these planes, how they operate. Keep up the great work, love your content! I always respected you for being exactly what you are. I respect you even more for sharing, teaching & showing us & your coworkers; and I will tell you why. When I worked @Sony there were certain people (asskissers, brown nosers to be nicer) that were always picked for product training even when it wasn’t their product & to perform a ‘knowledge transfer’ upon their returning to the people who actually had the hands on experience but never sharing to hold others back or to ‘have the power’ over others so they kept it to themselves. I applaud you for your respect of others & not be on a higher level than you coworkers. I could not think of a better man than YOU I’d rather be in a foxhole with. Your Mom did a wonderful job with you!

Another great and super informative video! I am curious, with the recent Airbus 330 electrical fire at Sea/Tac airport, could you explain for us the policies/procedures for ground support folks, as well as A&P mechanics, when a fire is discovered involving a aircraft? In the RU-vid video, there appeared to be quite a bit of confusion. Thanks again for everything you do!
@StigAviation
@StigAviation Месяц назад
I believe that was an Airbus 321 and when something like that happens, there is usually a very quick response time from emergency crews. In such emergency situations, the most important part is peoples safety, if safety is compromised, then people need to get away from that area. But that being said if there is somebody that can respond quickly, because there are fire extinguishers all over the place, without putting themselves into danger then they would have. as a technician if I see something like that, I will try to save the aircraft, but I will not put my life into immediate danger unless I saw somebody else in danger, then I would do my best to save them or help them. If the airplanes gonna burn down but nobody has been hurt, then let it burn down. It’s just metal. People are more important to me, I’ll save people not the aircraft. Hope that made sense 😅

Very very nice words at the end of the video, it is nice to see your work, your way of working, your jokes and as an aviation employee and spotter I learn a lot more. I'm a bit like you, when I see something on a plane and I don't understand what it is or do I ask a mechanic and they always love to tell you about it, because like you Stig you like your job and to teach others. Keep up the nice video. Cheers from Danny aka PiPo

Another Stig Shift!!!! Dutch Roll is a stability issue. Occurs with strong lateral stability, but weak directional stability - Yawing motion out of sync with rolling motion. Works like so: 1) Aircraft initially disturbed in Yaw, causes roll in the same direction. 2) As aircraft yaws back, it rolls in the opposite direction. (Aircraft yaws past the original position) 3) The cycle repeats.
