Here they are.... Stihl ms 201tc new style vs the tried and true Stihl ms 200t! see which puts out more power fully ported. For products and info visit my site worksaws.com/
This is my 201tc. Its a by far the best top handle saw i have owned. I have them all, and this one is my baby. I also put a 1 tooth larger sprocket on it to give it more chain speed. It has been 5 months, and i use it almost every day. It is running great with zero issues. Joe did a kick ass job on this saw, and he just informed me that my ms400 is done. Im looking forward to having another power house saw on the job site. Semper Fi, Steve K Tree Corps
I’d love to see a 60cc shootout, with a ms362, a 562xp, a cs620p, dolmar 6100, maybe a 6400, and older husky 262xp, an older 036 etc! Keep making great content Joe!!! Awesome stuff!
I am working on gathering all of them. I will probably finish porting and sell the 50cc to fund the 60cc saws. Late spring/early summer. Thank you for your support.
I was begging for something similar. 036 or 361 with a 362. I don’t understand why Stihl went backwards on the 362. Even modified the 362 is still not an impressive revision🤷🏻♂️
I don’t know why the 362 gets the hate; mine has run flawlessly and pulls 25” bar and chain. I’ve owned two now and both are good saws. (First one met it’s fate via truck fire.) I liked it enough to buy another 362. But if the stihl 400 was available when I was shopping it probably would be the one coming home with me. Thanks for all the testing and work Joe.
We tried both on a job (both bone stock btw). Obviously the 200 was older than the 201. Throughout the day, it seemed they were close enough in use that the only noticeable differences were because of who the operator was, not which saw was being used. I provided the 201 and the guy I was helping had the 200. Both in pretty good condition.
It’s funny to see those results after all of the videos that I have seen about the 200 being way more powerful than the 201. No arguing with the dyno. I love it.
This is both ported with my style, both muffler modded they were very close. Now ported that 7% is noticeable, but if chained Right it would be super close in the wood.
I start by comparing what the manufacturer claims. The 201tc out of the box is heavier, but makes more power and has a higher power to weight ratio. So it stands to reason that mods will increase power on any saw, but we're starting the race at different start lines. Wouldn't you want a 50 ft advantage in a footrace?
Without googling I’d say the bore strokes are the same so with the strato “x torq” piston vs windowed I wouldn’t think there’d be much difference. The vast I would say is in the m tronic vs carb and most people that work in their own sht would want the carb’d and most people that can afford the 201 would want warranty work. There may also be differences in compression.. oh, so the strato “x torq” is marketing jargon for “heavier piston” so you got that adding to curb weight and like I said they may have bumped the compression up. Other than that they’re both decked so you can delete the base gasket but time is proving the 01 to not be as bad as the little $800 bastard was said to be. I wish the 193/4 weren’t clams but it looks like you can bb a 193 with a 194 jug n slug. Shrug
Awesome job as always joe! This is something that’s really cool to see the numbers on these two saws. There has been a debate on it for quite some time! Definitely looks like it just comes down to personal preference at this point!
They are close enough that people shouldn't be too upset. Both would favor different styles of cutter too. 201 will tolerate a heavy hand and 200 will shine in the smaller stuff.
I just tore my 201 apart it has the dome piston and I am reading .021” squish. Also the exhaust is reading 108 and the intake at like 74. I am going to try and get close to your numbers. I’m not confident enough on the lathe to change the squish band yet.
Great content brother👍. I have 1997 model poulan 3450 54cc timbermaster type 2 saw. About to port soon any tips on poulan never ported on poulan. Great saw from family friend who wanted to get rid of it so I took the saw home only problem was the impulse line was broken ,new line runs like a champ
Would LOVE to see you do something w/ a 355t, I'm still amazed at how little love the 355t gets I mean it's been a god-send for me as a climber, sure the 2511 basically put it to the back-burner *but* I've kept an 18" on my 355t for years and it always always does exactly what it should IE reliably start & cut like a beast (I can bury an 18" with mine) And 9.3lbs WTH?? Stihl says that's an 8lbs powerhead....Echo marketing-materials do draw-attention to Stihl lying about specs but a 1.5lbs discrepency is insane (maybe it's fully fueled&oiled? I'm a nerd with 20min to kill am gonna check the reservoir capacities on a 201 :P )
@@dynojoemods2764 you mention that in one of the Stihl groups and the arguments will start. No one wants to hear the beloved 200 isn’t always top dog lol 😆
@@Houseworksaws thats why I always say it lol. I also tells folks the t 550 will take the 346's lunch money 😎. Gotta have a good time with the "team" guys lol.
Fantastic, thanks for sharing all your detailed info. My handyno was telling me the 201, even with jusr muff and timing was close to the 200t. How close is a ported 355t, I know you cant do squish but Id swear my ported advanced and muff modded 355t is very close to my roughly same as your ported 200t. Thanks again, this is pure gold.
@@dynojoemods2764 any pistons that would work as a popup for the 355? You got me putting a 460 on my timberwolf now, I take it its the least difficult of your 590 hybrids. Very bad influence sir.
@@dynojoemods2764 I've got a 020 av super i was going to send you but then i went ebay shopping and got the 201t c heading your way. Now im curious about the old school saw.
@0:48, the squish band work....do you happen to know any #'s for compression-ratio, or PSI at the spark-plug, or anything like that? That chamber looks WAY small even for 36cc, am gonna have to revisit your 661 video and see just how big the chamber there looked! Sorry for off-topic but have you seen the cheap aftermarket 660 big bore jugs? They come with 54mm ports, as one would expect, but most seem unaware they also come w/ the 54mm chamber in fact it's a touch *smaller* than the 660 chambers I had to compare (1 56mm 'new j's' and 2 56mm farmertec's), so - for those like myself who don't machine - we actually get to enjoy that in this particular configuration! I see you use wider squish clearances than many others, but you also seem to make smaller chambers, am I observing that correctly? Is this "balancing out" basically? IE instead of squishing 20, you squish 25 but it's got a smaller chamber, so compression-ratio would be same (or even higher)
Another top quality video Joe 👍🏻 Quick question - on the 201 you gave squish at about 0.027. Isn’t that quite high for a smaller capacity saw? My (albeit rudimentary) understanding was that on smaller cc saws you can go tighter on your squish as there’s less material to expand on the piston. Please correct me if I’m wrong as I mainly work on smaller cc saws as they’re more common here in Singapore. I normally aim for about 0.018 squish on 30-40cc saws.
Thank you. Generally you can go tighter on the smaller ones. After looking at the band and the size of the chamber I wanted to go a bit on the loose side of my .025" standard. With a bit of timing advance and the added compression I don't want these too hard to stsrt while up in a tree in a odd spot.
Working on it, have some homelite projects, and a few others hopefully this summer I can meet up with some others that deal with more vintage iron. Trying to keep a mix of different modern brands on the channel.
All part of the fun. Maybe a few other tweaks on the 200 can find even more power. Either way both saws are very close. But only 1 you can walk into a dealer and pick up.
370ml vs 310ml fuel tank capacity. Primary reason many people here wanted to skip the 201 generation. Little did they know batteries would take the manufacturer focus in the top handle class. I run both, but mostly the 200 for nostalgia.
@@7eis, that is a fairly insignificant amount of fuel in my opinion. That would change pending the outcome of a fuel economy test, how much wood cut for the fuel used.
No, but I've heard from a guy who has built a lot of 200s that the 020 cylinder will give a little boost stock for stock, and they are cheaper. Maybe Joe can test one for us to find out for sure.
@@IndianaDoug of course the 201 is a great option and they do much better on fuel too, but don't tell the die hard 200 fans 😜. I like my 200t and rear handle, they sound great, so there's that lol. I have a video cutting some red oak cookies with the 200 rear handle, she's a great runner, and a very clean example of a 200 😃. Have a great weekend buddy.
Was the clutch slipping on the 200T? I can tell you one thing, I really like my ported 201 much more than my 200 without a doubt. Also..... I always laugh when U pour the gas! U should get yourself a nice “no spil” gas can! Can’t beat them in my opinion Again thanks for the awesome videos
I really should get a no spill, but that would take some of the excitement away. I'm not sure if it was slipping, or if it was going into a wonky spot between the H / L side of the carb. Graph does look a bit odd on the lower rpm side.
@@dynojoemods2764 I noticed that and heard it also. I really don’t have any input on that but if I had to guess it maybe was slipping???? Either way then U know it could have some more room for power there as well! If U want a no spil tank I would be happy to send you one!
@@AATreeService I have a different 200 and a 020 coming up this spring rebuilt and supposed to be all stock. See if I can find some more out of those. Appreciate the can offer. I think I might have one somewhere.
The 200s are too expensive so are the 201s, I am not a professional tree man so I will never own either of them. If I could get three wishes from a Genie I would choose the 200 because of the cylinder and the lack of electronics. The power would not make much difference to me.
