I'm sorry, but hearing you "just talk" with your Dad reminds me of being back home and being with my Dad. It's a beautiful thing - enjoy it! Dad died in 2019 - He was 96. I still miss talking with him! He was my best friend!
Started with a 046 20+ years ago. Then 066, 460 and 441C. When the 500i started appearing in 2018, wanted one BAD. They first were available in Europe. They were promised in the US late 2018. Delay after delay followed. Wrote a letter to my dealer begging for the first 500i. He taped that letter on the wall for over a year. Finally, after breaking down crying late summer 2020, he called his distributor in Conneticut, begging for one for me. (Must have inherited that desire for new tech from grandpa, you will hear about that in my letter to you) That got 'er done. The baby arrived in Sept 2020. IT IS A HORSE! All my Stihl saws start good but this will start after 1-3 pulls. And does it work! 🤩
I bought a 500i a year and a half ago and love it. I now have 3 saws with 25” bars and think it is the perfect length because I don’t have to bend my back to cut a log on the ground. I already know what your review will after a season of using it, so enjoy!!!
I always love watching your videos and listening to your dad. Every video that you put out is very entertaining and useful in one way or another on top of you having some of the best scenery in the country. And unlike some youtube videos you are not asking for a hand out. Your whole family works for the betterment of the farm. Keep them coming.
I have 011 for small limbs 12” bar. 028 for medium limbs 16” bar. 029 super for the tree trunks 20” bar. Had to rebuild the 029 three yrs ago and put a jug and piston in it to up it to a 039 with a muffler mod. Burn wood and cut about a cord and a half each year. 100% agree, cut your wood when the weather conditions are good and it’s half the work. I stock pile two years ahead and let it season.
Pap has a nice collection of saws he said something I catch myself doing as now I am older (I wanted it) didn't really need it You boys are lucky having a cool Dad like him believe me. We all learn a lot when Dad speaks .
I have 170 sthil and sthil 271 farm boss and a Husqvarna 455 rancher and old homelite push oiler. The 271 is the best saw I've ever run for doing fire wood.
Nice group of saws,I bought a038Av super back in the 90s suprisingly it was made in Brazil! At the time Stihl wanted them off the market and I ended up paying $500.00 cash and no tax here in western New York.
I bought a 500i about a year and a half ago and love it. It’ll bury your boot in saw chips in a heart beat, it’s a screamer forsure. I was dead set on a 462 but (my buddy owns local STIHL dealership) dealer couldn’t get one in. He had a 500i and brought it up to try out and that’s all it took I got one on the next order 25” bar full wrap handle bar. Runs crisp 100% of the time and starts flawless in winter and summer.
after I burned up a few cheapy saws, I picked up an ms291 (white handle 😁). sees less than 100 hours a year, some years less than 50. She always runs and with a sharp blade, really rips. Would recommend.
Good video, enjoyed the conversation. I like that you dad bought because he "wanted it.", good enough reason. I have been doing all my cutting with an 034 since '93. The dealer told me many years ago to keep it running as long as I can. Still works as good as ever.
I have both Husqvarna and Stihl power equipment. Once you get out of the home owner stuff, into the farm & ranch level or even up into the pro series stuff both Husky and Stihl shine together. Reason I am a Husqvarna guy primarily is there is a Husqvarna dealer 8 miles from me and the Stihl dealer was 18miles from me, well now they combine and sell both brands at both shops. The guys say ear brand has specific models that will shine better than the other but realistically both are just as good and realiable.
The Stihl company should be awarding you “Best Customer of the Decade “ with all those saws 😂😂. I’ve owned one Husqvarna in the last 40 years, but I can feel that itch coming on, I think I’ll rush out and buy a new one!!😂 love your videos, love all those saws too. Regards from Down Under.
We had 2 farm boss's i think they were 046s but not sure. They were great saws. I had a friend that had a big one I can't remember what size but he had a 6' bar on it and I never in my life would have thought it would move so much up an down when cutting it was wild to watch. We had a great big old sycamore tree that was 6' around. He got it done but he worked at it for a long time. Thanks for the video great as always.
I share the same thoughts on the 038's. I own 3 of them now, a magnum, and 2, 038 magnum 2's the one I purchased recently had west coast parts on it including the very hard to find tri-port muffler. Normally run 25 inch and 28 inch bars on them and they just bear down and eat.
I bought a stihl ms310 17 years ago. Never let me down yet. Run a 24 inch bar with a full skip chain. When I bought a new saw a few years ago, ended up going with an echo 620p because at the time it was the only manufacturer on the market with an old school carburetor. 28 inch bar with full skip, Great saw! Other than that I'm a old school homelite junky, it's what I grew up with.
My first saw personally has been a Stihl MS250 with 18 inch bar. It’s been a great all around saw other than one issue I wish was different. I’ve toyed around with the idea of a bigger saw but haven’t been able to justify it quite yet. 15 acres of oak, cherry, walnut. I’ll get one some day! That 500i looks real nice!
We run stihls in western New York on our dairy farm. We have 3 -460mags and a 660mag. A few other smaller ones too. Great reliable saws. Thank for the look at your dad's saw rack!!
great video. I just purchased the 500i maybe two weeks ago. I had trouble finding one in my area (south-central Pennsylvania). So far its been a fantastic saw, really fast and strong. I've cut down and bucked up several loads since buying it and I'm impressed with it.
At the lumber jack competitions they have some tricked out saws with fancy expansion chamber exhausts and maybe even turbo chargers. Such a type would be a whole new avenue for George's collection.
I run an MS290 Farm Boss with a 20" bar. It's a great saw for an occasional user. I also have a 180 with a 14" bar that I like for small stuff and limbing. It's a lot lighter than the 290, which is less tiring.
I learn so much from your conversations. Its almost impossible to buy a professional or bigger saw now days. I gave up trying after sitting on a wait list for a year to get one you had recommended before.
I love my 029 Farm boss and my 039 with a 25 inch bar. They have been good saws. Use ethenol free gas and keep it fresh. If it been a little while since I cut I'll dump my gas can in the Poppin Johnny and mix up a fresh can. I also hit the saw with compressed air and clean it up when I'm done with it (most of the time).
when I was 12 years old, was running a McCulloch chain saw, that was heavy, Took my Bro. & I to hold it, but it would cut wood! years ago working in the woods, always used Stihl saws!
Hey if you guys if you would like to watch a review on the 500i Buckin billy Ray is a tree faller and he is a mac guy he's got a hell of a review on that saw just a little something to watch.
interesting hearing what the boss had to say about the 660 ............got a lightly used one here ........was very disappointed by it ............have a well worn husky 365 special that can almost keep up with it both sporting 20 inch bars.............. the husky has very average compression ........the ms660 is hard to pull over without the decomp button pressed .......
Oh no Dad, tell me you didn’t... You’ve joined the Corvette Club?🤦🏻♂️🤣. Looks like you were in a desperate position, and anytime we run short on saws, we gotta run out and fill the gap! All kidding aside, congrats on the purchase. I believe it’s more like the weight of an 038 and cuts closer to the 660. Will it drag chain on a long bar as well as the 660 class units? Doubtful, but for 32” down, your energy level at the end of the day is likely to be a little better. Especially since you commonly run 20” bar, it’s definitely going to be easier to wield. Bless’ns to ya, Tedd
About 12 years ago I bought my first saw which was a 290. After a bit I put a 20 inch bar on it and it has not let me down since. I would suggest at 290 for a first saw.
Can't wait to see how that holds up and hear your father's take on it. I've got a 360 and 661c both have been great. The 661c can get a bit heavy after a while. Thanks for the videos.
Fuel injected saws.... I should have known that would be coming. I still use a Jonsereds 70E. Good to know if I were to sell it someone would snap it up the way it sounds.
I run two stihls ms 391 25inch blade and a ms291 16 inch blade good saw never had a issue my son has two stihls also my dad 046 20 inch blade and farmhand stihl not sure on the size but it is a 18 inch Good saws
Good video. I am with your dad the older saws are much better I use my 28 super and 46 Stihl all the time I traded off the ms 230 for a 400 echo I am going to trade off the 360 pro to I hate the new fuel and oil caps I will never buy anything with that cap again I have broke 4 and sick of high priced fuel and oil running out on the ground. Take care, be safe and well.
No doubt fuel injection is the future. My (33yr./old) "boy" will NOT own anything with a carburetor...an' bless my soul, now he doesn't HAVE to... But seriously, folks, what was the last carburetor-type of car (or truck) you bought?
old saws are just different i have a old John deere big saw and you just get it in the wood and lay on it she pulls down and just hangs there new saw can't do that but that john deere will vibrate you to death and its heavy
Those saws are very dangerous in the hands of an amateur. Why haven't chain saw motors been subject to federal emissions standards like outboard motors? The 'Federal Register' bureaucratic process might want to look at these machines. What do you think of the Register? Of course "The Wisconsin Administrative Register" is highly read. It's like reading a chain saw manual. Eaglegards...
Great info in the video - thanks! The discussions with your dad are always interesting! I admire how well y'all seem to get along. Another channel that I enjoy and get a lot of information on saws, saw maintenance, and tree cutting techniques is cottontop3. He is a good old southern boy that runs a tree removal business in Alabama. I think you will enjoy the channel. Keep up the good work and stay warm....
