I was getting eggs from pasture-raised chickens. The farmer also raised cows. He'd move cows to the next pasture, let that the previous pasture sit for a few days until there were maggots on the cow manure, and then (using a bus as a hen house) he'd bring the chickens onto that pasture. There is nothing like maggots for a great food source for chickens. Even the maggots were pasture-raised. Now that is farming for the win!

Valid points. Chickens need about 20% protein feed. Replacing corn for wheat or barley is easy if the farmer has good sources for that due to the low protein %. Replacing Soy is much harder due to the high protein %. Field Peas are a good alternative but the majority of the feed will have to be that. Good to remember that chickens are not herbivores and animal protein is possible as well if one can get a good source. Depending on the scale fermenting your soy feed might be an option. Lots of good videos showing fermented feed for chickens on RU-vid, a few of them at pretty decent scales too.

Why not feed chickens on protein from maggots that feed on cow manure? That is as traditional as pasture-raised farming gets.

@@MarmaladeINFP That definitely happens when pasture raising your chickens behind cows or sheep but it isn't really scalable to make it a large % of the chicken feed. Should be done regardless as the chickens will spread the manure through their scratching searching for fly larvae but also it is needed for the ruminants because doing that greatly reduces the fly population and is healthier for your cows. Its a win win win.

So if one was trying to avoid linoleic acid from the types of feed given to the chickens (corn, soy, wheat, rice etc), the best thing to do is to raise your own eggs or dont eat eggs?

they eat grass,worms,insects,flies etc why would they need corn or soy? i grew up in africa and the chicken never needed corn or soy to grew healthy

What doctor said is true. You got to immerse yourself in the game, raise your own layers and study nutrition to understand that 99% organic eggs are actually just partially organic. Feeding ample and correct nutrition while being organic takes years of RnD and for sure you'll end up being the lone wolf. And you find out everyone just lies blatantly or just stay ignorant lier. Your product will be the most expensive to produce but the market just doesn't buy it because who cares. Pathetically hard, man.

Organic isn't organic any more either. Would it work to grow the grain in the field they will graze? Or section part of the field of until the grain is ready?

Non-GMO rice, milo and non-GMO high oleic soybeans would be good options to consider first.

@@easyme12 Organic by definition is non-GMO. In our case, we know the practices of the farm that produces our feed. One of the first conversations I had with them was about pesticides. Some of the ingredients that we use to optimize our feed for human nutrition aren't available as organic, but are as non-GMO. The other problem that we ran into with attempts to go with only organic feed was that the trail of transparency was absent. I could tell you who would sell me the feed, but not who grew it. I like to know where my feed is coming from. Non-GMO options still exist that make this possible.

At this point you can't trust organic labeling anymore either. Would it work to Sprinkle gain seeds in the fields that they graze in? Would enough grain grow? Or maybe section part of the field for grain?
