Still worse than the competition... CCM Speedblade XS Black Steel Review

The CCM XS Black blades are still disappointing and a step behind the competition from aftermarket companies like Step/Byonic/Tydan. From my experience Bauer LS4 was better than the Speedblade 4.0 Black, of which these didn't feel any different.

Step's been available for a few months now :) I got a set first thing when I got my FT2s on release.

I agree with this 100%! I bought the AS1 and I changed the blades after 1 skate to step steel. I was wondering if it would make a difference. The black speed blade actually felt soft and I didn't feel confident on my edge. You can definitely tell the step steel feels better and edge lasts longer.

I have the custom FT2 skates which I got back in August and the stock black steel sucked. It felt like I was skating on dull edges even when I went to a deeper hallow I was not getting much bite. I got regular step steel a few months ago and it solved my problem. I'm thinking about upgrading to the Black Step steel

If you bought the mirror finish Step, the Black Step should have a bit longer lasting edges. If you bought normal Step Steel than the Black will glide better and have longer lasting edges!

@@HockeyReviews Did you have the same problem that I did with the Stock CCM black steel?

@@nickb2912 I've always had problems with CCM steel, it is absolutely garbage. It is one of the reasons CCM bought Step so they would be competitive in that market again. I had a similar problem with you where the edge didn't feel sharp, but mine would also be extremely dull too quickly

I have custom ft2s, got them around one year ago, I don’t qualify for free step steel tho but these XS blades don’t last at all. I use to have black step steel on my old skates but they don’t fit with my new ones but I’m thinking on copping black step steel again

The problem with CCM top end skates without the Step Steel deal is you have to spend like $150 to get steel that is actually useful.

Hockey Reviews just bought my black step steel today. It was $240, $206 for the steel and $34 for the profiling

I just picked up a pair of the Jetspeed FT490s and wow is all I can say about them definitely a nice choice on my part. Now I know they're not the FT2s but I did pay a decent price for them in my opinion. My question is do you think upgrading to the Step steel blacksteel runners would be worth for my skates or should just stick with the normal non black XS1 blades that they came with. Reason I ask id because I was kindve hoping they would have came with the black blades in them considering the price I paid for them after taxes. Thanks.

Step black steel is so much better than any CCM steel. I'd say even normal Step would be a huge upgrade over anything CCM had (until they bought Step).

@@HockeyReviews Ok thank you for the honest opinion I suppose the ultimate choice is mine in the end but it is always great to get advice from someone whose had first hand experience. Thanks again! :)

Agree with everything said in this review. CCM stock blades are garbage right now. Matt - have you tried or heard any good things about Bladetech steel? Is there any legitimacy behind the claim that their "flex force" technology is able to increase ones speed?

I have only heard of them through www.modsquadhockey.com forums, but haven't tried them and haven't seen them nor do I know anyone that has used them.

Youre making it seem like this would make me a Bad player. If I upgraded from XS Stainless default blades to these Black Steel xs1 would I get any benefits? Or is it just absurdly bad that it isnt better than the Default stainless runners
@HockeyReviews
@HockeyReviews 2 года назад
You really wouldn't get any benefits. They are supposed to be better glide and edge retention but the coating is terrible and it doesn't do anything but easily scrape off if you use a stone on them. If you already bought them and sharpened them than it is what it is. But I would never recommend these as an upgrade over even the stainless. You shouldn't buy CCM steel unless it is Step, the aftermarket stuff is way better.

Glad I fell on that review. Bought some CCM Ribcore titanium skates last year. They come with the regular speedblade XS stuff. Since the beginning they feel like they aren’t sharpen at all. They feel dull especially under the back of feet. Even if I ask shop to go more sharper they don’t hook to ice. So maybe the cheap and soft ccm steel is the issue. I’ll maybe give step blades a try. Because now I’m back in my 20year old Reebok skates

Anders Borum Hey dude. I had the Ribcore sharpen about 4 or 5 times total at 2 different shops (total of 3 different technician). Once I asked for 3/8 instead of 1/2 sharpen index. Played probably 9-10 games total.Each time it felt dull under pressure on back portion of foot. Even when freshly sharpen. On each foot. I had my 4K Reebok sharpen by same person, 3/8. And the feel awesome. So I’m starting thinking the issue is the blades itself on Speedblade XS. I’m not far from buying step Vsteel or blacksteel because the Ribcore are some light and comfortable I want to play with them
