On my Christmas party we had a Christmas Song competition. My team won. I carried my team when we did Silent Night. I was the ONLY ONE in MY squad to sing in German. My teacher was surprised as hell.
JFK yes I love history too and apparently the carols original language is German. My grandmother is German and my great grandfather was German who served in WW1 so he would have sung this at Christmas. I like to carry the tradition on so I only sing the carols in German now even though I know them in English.
I learned to sing this song in German when I was in the Eastin Arcola Elementary school choir. I wish I'd kept singing it, as I have forgotten, that was over 50 years ago!
this is the best Christmas song I've ever heard in my life.... it feels like, your sitting in a bench, the park only has a number of people, and your just there to experience you first winter......
I'm going to learn the lyrics by heart and sing it on video call playing on the piano for my Mother on Christmas Eve (Weinachten). I have been so blessed with my German Mother and Afrikaans Father, best Mommy and Daddy ever!
Quick story, before the covid, we have xmas parties at a school house the owners of my company saved. He is a farmer, she is an ex school teacher. anyway she likes to end the night with Silent Night, and challenged everyone to learn it in German, As she is German decent, he is Dutch decent. I think I will spread this video to make that lady happy this xmas
Für mich es ist besser auf Deutsch als auf Englisch. I'm englush but I dont cry at English version😔 as my mum has often done. stille nacht? I'm in sobs (sigh). I just feel 'home'. It's really weird.
directly from german, this is what it is in english, but the words in english do not fit the beat and rhythm of the song, so they have been changed to have a similar meaning of equal beauty.
