Our Modern Classics review series returns once again and this time round our host Stimming dives into Swedish company Elektron’s Analog Rytm, an eight voice drum machine which combines analogue drum synthesis with simple playback. Over the years and through its various releases the production manufacturing company Elektron has gained somewhat of a cult following with many of the machines becoming staples in the studios of some of the most respected producers. The Analog Rhym falls into this category thanks for its meticulously engineered precision when it comes to punchy kicks, shimmering hats, crisp snares and sharp percussion, all of which can be programmed across its twelve pads and in built step sequencer. On top of this already weighty functionality, and in true Elektron fashion, the company has integrated a flexibility which allows every drum voice to be spiced up with customisable samples as well as fx elements like individual LFOs, analog percussion sound generators, analog overdrives, and analog multimode filters.
Stimming takes a look over this powerful piece of kit to tell you what he thinks.

I love the MK2 because of resampling, if it had stereo sampling and time stretching it would be my favorite instrument.

The kicks are actually really nice if you combine them with a rumble sample created on the machine itself. Adding some distortion glues them together. You can set the lfo on the rumble to duck when the kick hits

2:46 I've always stumbled on the name too, and I'm Swedish! "Analog" is just the swedish word for "Analogue", so it follows that "Rytm" is the swedish word for "Rhythm" (which is not easy to pronounce either!). The accent is on the "y", one syllabe. So rYtm. Sort of. A sharp "r". A "alveolar trill" not the classic german uvular fricative r we all know and love. Not a comfortable word to say in Swedish either. The Analog Puls could perhaps have been a better name, just off the top of my head. The "takt" in Digitakt is the swedish word for "pace" or even "rhythm". Strangely enough they didn't name its FM brother the "Digiton", but the english "Digitone". Then again it's not called the Analog Fyra... I should go to bed, sorry for the text-wall. Love your videos.

@cooptrol

Some considerations: 1) There is a limited amount of parameters that you can add to Scenes and Performances, so no, you problably can't have all 16 slots used unless you map only 1 or 2 parameters per slot. 2) It has 1 DAC per voice for sample>analog path, 2 ADC and 2 DAC per send effect (delay and reverb), and 1 ADC for each of the 8 voices, both L and R inputs, and the L y R Master, all for getting the tracks into Overbridge. The total count would be: 12 DACs, 16 ADCs. The path to the audio outputs is completely analog, only conversion happens for samples, effects, and usb streaming. 3) Hence point 2, the Compressor is analog.
@jetpacksnake9741
@jetpacksnake9741 3 года назад
Point 1 is inaccurate. There are 12 not 16 pads. Between them they can have a total of 48 parameters assigned. So you could have 4 on each of the 12, or 8 on each of 6 pads. Etc. 48 among all scenes and 48 among all performances.
@cooptrol
@cooptrol 3 года назад
@@jetpacksnake9741 Thanks for the clarification. I was too lazy to look into the manual to give the exact quantities. My point was to say that there is a limit. And the 16 pad thing hahaha I have it in front of me all day, but must be I have just been watching too much MPC videos...

You know the really sad thing bout the people that advertise or own these drum machines is that Most of them hardly know the depth of programing. For example, I recall some programing my crew did on a simple Yamaha RY30 1998 model. The thing don't even come with bass just drum kits and my boy K.L.K find a way to manipulate the resonance in a cymbal or a crash with the pitch to an extent where they made some lovely water bass sounds. Some time later I met a guy who played in a big band and he asked me what bass syn you using. I said its an ry30 he was like you lie ... I was like nopes just ry30 doing every thing. He was so so shocked. he was like I owned a Ry 30 for years and he never knew it could do that. The look on his face priceless.

Nette Demonstration.

in regards to the performance mode being overly complicated compared to the Octa's fader,... isn't it.... pretty much the same but with pressure instead of a fader? On the octa you can also select from 16 different scenes, right? Plus in the Rytm MK2 there is a dedicated knob to use for this (Quick perf amount) instead of the pressure.
@MartinStimming
@MartinStimming 3 года назад
I agree - the thing is, the fader in the OT becomes freaking complicated as soon as you use more than two/three scenes. Even more mindtwisting as A/B can be any of the 16 scenes. In the OT classic review I mention that. so - the one knob in the mk2 seems to be a very good idea. I like it when I had the A4 mk2.

I guess its not about what the rytm is capable of, its more like: whats convenient to use? In regard to the use of performance/scene-mode, if you did prepare your scenes before its easy to turn the knob. But for the use of performance/scene mode as in live wiggling (as in the video) its really complicated. To me it seems this is what happens often on the rytm. the possibilities are endless, but the way to get there is not very practical...
@GeekGearSynths
@GeekGearSynths 3 года назад
For me it's not the same. How can I blend between my settings in the performance on pad 1 to the performance on pad w/o falling back to he original state? Performances are more of a temporary nature while scenes on the OT stay active (same counts for rytm) and you can blend smoothly between two scenes regardless of the original settings.
@muaythaifred
@muaythaifred 3 года назад

Got the mkt but don’t use it much because of the lets say dull sound. Samples sound dark and are mono.

yeah, seems to be a language issue - the word doesn't really work with a german background. so I should have stopped talking about it so much ;)

I assume those guys are Swedish. That word is weird even for a Norwegian. Strange to end on "tm". We say "rytme".

The issue with the pads is due to dust getting onto the sensors, you just need to disassemble and clean the carbon film with some alcohol, it will be better than new.

what is he saying around 35:00 about gain staging and pre amp overdrive on mackie mixers? i dont understand? something about equating beginning of signal overdrive with the saturation on the rytm?

36:20 on the drive page in the fx path before the compressor the symmetry of the drive was off. if its not at 0 you get this weird compression very fast. more extreme settings tend to let the singnal disappear completely if run thourgh the comp. and yes it is an analog comp :)

What happened at 36:00 minute with the compressors happens to me also when I use the SYM parameter of the distortion unit. The technicalities behind I don’t know 🤷🏻

Your conclusion about the performance mode being great in concept, but missing the mark in reality I think can be applied to the whole device. As you said joining analogue and sample together in one device was brave and a win for the industry, but I can't help but get the impression it falls a little flat overall? Purely because the analogue sound is so ehh. Had it really stood out in sound, I think the quirks and complexity would become background noise.

+1) Maybe thats the reason why 90% of rytm spend their living as a sample playback device in mute mode (+performance mod once in a while)....
@Sypher474
@Sypher474 3 года назад
@@MStimming Absolutely! Was also going to respond to @MechaTomb saying the 808 kick alone has been a mainstay in multiple genres for decades. Same for the entire 909 still being the difinitive house sound. Had Elektron done something maybe a bit more adventurous, this could have been a genre spawning device in the same way all the Roland machines had been in their day. Maybe I'm just trying to justify my recent Digitakt purchase over the Rytm though!
