This song had a profound effect on me when I first quit drinking in very nearly 30 years ago in 1994. I could relate to it in so many ways. Rather than getting me down, it made me feel empowered, it felt like someone was singing it to me encouragingly. I am still sober and clean.
There's 2 of us, I quit in 1989 when I was 33 yo, coz I had 6 children and needed to devote more time to them and wifey. 34 yrs later and I'm still off it and so glad I am too, with 15 beautiful grandchildren and 1 great. Thanks to you Sting.
I drank like a fish… lightning… vodka… rye… tequila… now, at 76, only Louie XIII Why this story… I’m proof there is an alcoholic gene, as I was never an alcoholic! I do know a lot of them, however, many AA folks… some of which go off after 19-20 years and it’s really rough… one killed themselves, so don’t even think about it! The AA success story’s are actually little miracles and a very low percentage! I knew a guy… a blind drunk… and the last thing he remembered was a woman he hit coming through his windshield! Another guy wrecked his car a couple blocks from his house and the cops found him sobbing uncontrollably in the attic of his house! You guys are living miracles!
Riding on a bus at night, sitting near the window seat while it's raining outside, and listening to this song on my headphones. What a soothing experience.
He doesn't get the credit that he greatly deserves his music is Ageless. It has its own unique style and sophistication that is timeless. Not only easy one of the greatest singers out there, he's also one of the greatest writers out there.
@@Touchthibo Gregory's cover is also magnificent. Both + the other with Eric Clapton are amazing. But I do prefer this one. The instrumental is just... Can't explain. And Sting's voice echoing ❤
dang..it makes me sad, man: but then, who's he talkin' to, what's he mean, and what a great song... it's not necessarily sad: it seems to me, this cat's songs mean more than we can ever know in a given decade or century, nobody's ever seen anything like it, man
I've always enjoyed this Sting song, so musically smooth. BUT the lyrics were secondary, subliminal to Sting's delivery. I'd never really heard the words; until I happened on Gregory Porter's version. I believe Porter sang it at a tribute for Sting. The lyrics are absolutely Incredible.
I think Sting is very good at writing about real human feelings and he captures the story with the proper mood through the music. Really gifted musician, artist. This song is about, I think, the lonely battles that many face through life. It's a tough world sometimes, and the song is thus relatable.
If the night turned cold And the stars looked down And you hug yourself On the cold, cold ground You wake the morning In a stranger's coat No one would you see Ask yourself, 'Who'd watch for me? 'My only friend, who could it be?' It's hard to say it I hate to say it But it's probably me When your belly's empty And the hunger's so real And you're too proud to beg And too dumb to steal You search the city For your only friend No-one would you see You ask yourself, 'Who could it be? 'A solitary voice to speak out and set me free' I hate to say it I hate to say it But it's probably me You're not the easiest person that I ever got to know And it's hard for us both to let our feelings show Some would say I should let you go your way You'll only make me cry But if there's one guy, just one guy Who'd lay down his life for you and die It's hard to say it I hate to say it But it's probably me When the world's gone crazy, and it makes no sense And there's only one voice that comes to your defence And the jury's out And your eyes search the room One friendly face is all you need to see And if there's one guy, just one guy Who'd lay down his life for you and die It's hard to say it I hate to say it But it's probably me I hate to say it I hate to say But it's probably me I hate to say it I hate to say But it's probably me I hate to say it I hate to say But it's probably me
I haven't listened to this whole album in probably 30+ years. Quite honestly, it is one of the most incredibly written, played, produced, collection of songs ever.
I have to say, I was introduced to Sting (separate from the Police, which I knew about already) when I was about 14 or 15.... fell in love with his beautiful music then. Still in love with his music today..... over 30 years later. I still place Sting and Sade as two of my favorite all time singers. If there was a dream I could have answered, I'd love to sing a duet with Sting..... even if it never made it on a recording.
Oh, lucky you! And I also love them both (see my profile), and I met several people here, who would love to hear the duet: Sade and Sting. (I wouldn't dare to sing along with Sting, just not do do him a harm)
Sting is the greatest and most prolific song writer of all time! John and Paul are close but he has the edge on number of great songs. Great singer and musician too obviously.
This is a song like If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, where I got the feeling Sting was writing it about his own life. And of course, you can take his lyrics on so many levels. You just feel that a lot of thought and perception went into it's creation. Magnificent is an understatement of the essence of this song. Thank you Sting. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
@Sting Official thanks for bein' such an example of great musical lyricism and whatnot, man, i've only wanted to tell ya that since 1982 when i saw you guys play in michigan, up north... dad 'n' i 'n' brother denny took yogurt-slides, haha, and a good time was had by all, even mom too, we all love your Art/Work~ thank YOU, sir~
La perfección hecha canción: melodía arreglos, instrumentación, tempo, voz, letra and etc.Todo girando en una deliciosa armonía. Thanks to enrich wind, forest, ocean music with your magic. LOVE
This song aged very well. still one of my heavy sting favorites. It eases my mind. years ago when Artist Gregory Porter did his tribute to Sting Live on stage he knocked it out the park with so much soul. Gives ya goose bumps....
My God, everything here is pure perfection. Everybody is so young and illegally talented. Sting is an absolute genius, the trumpet sounds so “night in downtown”, and Willem Dafoe on the guitar is sooo endlessly cool. That is paradise.
This is my favourite song of Sting since early 90s... The whole album is genius beyond anything, I just love this one the most for some strange reason. The quality of music production is also just beyond. QJ's level
I went to a very small exclusive concert to see Sting in the early 90's. I think there were only about 50 to 100 people in the audience and we were sat so close to Sting as he was singing in the middle of the circle with his top off, his black & yellow striped jeans on and his sex appeal in full attendance. What a guy, what a talent, what a performer. I am so glad that I got to see him live and in such an intimate concert.
Stings great, I love his work with the police. I used to find his solo work too polished and mainstream but now I appreciate its craft and the little nuances he puts into it
This is one of this man's - this living legend's - finest of all time. If I Ever Lose My Faith In You is his #1 for me. This one is most indubitably #2 for me.
i didn't appreciate that one, personally... it was like, why not bring phil collins in, to play a few of his heavy-ass'd-drum-bashes too, right? haha, just kidding, eric: the guitah bits on 'i'd have you anytime' were great, that's you, right? and you're one-lucky-cat, man~
@@charlescowart5423 oh yeah? well... ironic, i'd say.... because the one on the record, that i always knew, sounding almost exactly like this one here, sounds much better
Classics like this never grow old.....the early 90's was the tail end of an era of music when beautifully crafted melodys with stunning harmonies supported phenomenal lyrics, and musicians with other wordly talents got together to play what was written as well as it possibly could. The fact that Sting got Vinnie Colaiuta to play on this whole album was a masterstroke
I first knew Sting and Police in 1978 when I studied in London. His music changed quite a lot in this 40years. But still, Sting is my favorite musician. Don't stand so close to me, Beds are too big without you, Every breath you take, Invisible sun, Spitits of material world.........Fields of gold.
Since I was a teenager I loved Sting & the Police, but this song is so special to me. The lyrics are just so real about past times in my life. I play guitar along with some of the songs, it's my way of meditation. Thank you for the beautiful songs & music through all these decades.🙏
Listen to this every morning on my way to work and while riding by the water it’s just relaxing and soothing to the soul love Sting his voice coolness and style ⭐️⭐️⭐️
the music is the studio version but Sting is singing live here....This song is a masterpiece of subtle jazz chords, showcasing Sting's amazing composing abilities....
STING'S MUSIC IS LIKE THE BEST LIBRARY YOU COULD EVER IMAGINE. TIMELESS, VALUABLE, FOLLOWED HIS CAREER FOR OVER 44 YEARS. HOPE FELICIA AND I MEET STING AND TRUDIE AFTER OUR WEDDING.
One of the original Kings of Blue eyed Soul...the legendary Sting! Absolutely my favorite song of yours. Thanks for creating it Sir. Louisiana soul brother Rohn
I've been a huge fan of Sting since the early 80's when he was still with the Police. This brings back memories of my youth. I'm pretty sure that this song was used in A Thomas Crown Affair with Pierce Brosnan. Thank you.
At some point one has to face his inner demons and his inner fears. This song helped me to face myself. I am responsible for my actions and how I treat people. We don't have to hit a brick wall any longer when we are real about who we are and our past . Thank for this sobering melancholy but powerful song.
REALLY FEELING THIS TONIGHT AS I VISION THE LORD SENDING FELICIA AND I OUT INTO THE WORLD HARVEST. SO BLESSED AND GRATEFUL LORD, AMEN. I HAVE FOLLOWED STING SINCE 1976- MY DAD, MOM AND I LOVED GOING TO THE FORT WORTH, TEXAS MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND HISTORY AT THE IMAX THEATER TO SEE " THE LIVING SEA" FEATURING STING'S MUSIC 💜💜💜🎶🎶🎶
