The English lyrics are by veteran pop singer Brenda Russell, and I think I read a story once about how she dashed off these lyrics just in time for Sting to learn and record them. Pretty good. The English lyrics are much more romantic and sensual than Lins's Portuguese lyrics, which seem more impressionistic and poetic and are about nature, I think.

I remember an ex and I listening to this on a warm spring night, and dancing together as the moon shone in the windows. We parted amicably and I have many happy memories of our time together, and that evening spent dancing to this tune stands out. Many warm, happy feelings associated with this song, and hopes of other memories waiting to be made.

I found this (A Love Affair: The Music of Ivan Lins) compilation CD of Lins' music at the public library; put it on in the car, and ordered my own copy as soon as I got home. On radio I'd heard the song Sting does & knew the sax had to be Michael Brecker, but the whole project is just gleaming with brilliance. This youtube has the sequence (playlist order) mixed up, but you'll want your own anyway so just go ahead, treat yourself & order one too! Grover, Chaka, Freddy Cole, Vanessa W - just ALL the performances are exquisite.

I heard this song a few years ago when I called somewhere,and they put me on hold,and this song was played.I recognized the voice,and knew it was Sting.Then I discovered it was him.great song through and through. Two people missed the like button.

I met Sting at a club where I danced and used to imagine he sang this song about me. I say "met" but I didn't realize who he was at the time; he approached me in the dim and din and had thought he said his name was "Steven." I say, "You know, when you smile like that, you look a lot like Sting..." He says: "Oh really? Is that a good thing?" I start professing my undying love, deifying Sting - TO STING!! -completely unaware until later. Good thing, too. If I'd known, I'dve been paralyzed.

Ivan Lins carries the torch once held by Tom Jobim ... and Sting's cover is a good match. Velas Icadas is my favorite by Lins, but I don't think Sting quite has the range for that melody line.
