Watch here the trailer for Sting's stunning album "Songs from the Labyrinth - Dowland Anniversary Edition" released on Deutsche Grammophon in August 2013.
This special edition album is dedicated to the 450th anniversary of John Dowland's birth. It comprises the original album along with live versions of several of the songs performed at the St. Luke's concert in London in 2007, plus the celebrated renditions of "Fields of Gold", "Message In A Bottle" and "Hellhound On My Trail".

I always appreciate Sting interpreting and bringing these works to life in new ways. I listen to a lot of other classical performers of medieval music like Jordi Savall and family, who insure that things are always aesthetically proper and authentic, and still appreciate what Sting is doing. For me, I'm interested in how artists act as a conduit allowing humanity to communicate across the ages. Lovely lyrical expressions.

Sting is a very dear person, a great musician and a never ending explorer of music. The Lute album is excellent!!! I didn''t know, that I would ever like this kind of music... :-)

Yes alright, sorry, I was being unkind. The thing is, if a classical singer (even an unknown one) didn't know his notes in the studio, he would be fired or at least, accused of unprofessionalism. Also, the pop singing style Sting uses is inadequate for Dowland's requirements (high larynx, lack of support etc - leads to breathy low notes and strained middle register). But alright, he's very popular, and he'll sell many records and get Dowland out to a new audience, so let's see waht happens.

Although Dowland may have been a "pop singer" as Sting says, that term's a bit misleading in this context: Dowland was a "trained" singer (even if he sang in taverns etc!). For comparison, listen to 3'43" here and then search RU-vid for: Clear or Cloudy - Rogers Covey-Crump. let me know what you think.

Covey Crump's rendition is good - natural and unaffected. Personally I would like to have a classically trained Baritone singing in a natural style (not pop - but with good unaffected diction and sound resonance without being loud), as Covey Crump comes close to doing.

One of the only good things about this album is that it really shows pop singers that their skills are... not the same... as trained operatic voices. In pop music, the voice plays a different role. The voices in Dowland's music are there to sing notes... precise notes, like an instrument. The lyrics are secondary, if not even irrelevant sometimes. If you're not singing the notes in Dowland's music correctly, and beautifully... theres not really much point. Sting might as well just speak the words, and that style doesn't translate well to Dowland's music.
