I’ve sold a few videos of my home town in south wales here in the uk on pond5. A few videos and images on adobe stock. But on shutterstock I’ve sold a lot of my 3d horror and cryptid images. Back in January somebody bought seven images for a lot (over £300) and i seem to be selling more every month. I’ve seen a few of images used in youtube videos as thumbnails or as clips. It’s gratifying to see your work used in anything i think and yes, the money is a good bonus

I had the idea years ago and started working towards getting the equipment to start even posted a few photos. And yes I have a different perspective on the topic. I view most if not all of my travels from a different view than every one else. I see the world from the deck of my sailboat ever see Savanna from tide height? Or passed through a drawbridge in North Carolina or watched a Saturn rocket launch from Cocoa, Florida western shore? Most 9-5 ers and Werner drivers haven’t either.

I'm definitely looking to add it to my business. I switched to a part-time day job to pursue doing my photography full time, but in order to stay afloat I need to find away to increase my income that less rough on my body (due to health issues and COVID exhaustion).

Hi Nicole - enjoyed your insights. I am wondering if since you are non-exclusive with Pond5 do you participate with their GPP where they distribute to the other sites ie, SS, Adobe Stock, etc. or do you submit to each agency individually? I have been on SS with mostly images for a while now and just starting up with Pond5 but was looking for some insight as I get more into video content?

I have an exclusive account with Pond5 too - they allow you to have both! Generally though I submit most of my non-exclusive content individually to each agency - more work, I know.

In my opinion stock is worth it only if you already are working as a pro and have accesso to the gear. Starting all over would not be profitable right now... what do you think?

Thanks! A gimbal for a camera or a phone? I have gimbals but honestly never use them, I tend to use tripods more often.

Great video! I noticed in two shorts videos you showed: you holding a canon camera, and you in front of a Costco store, the brands are visible and your face is identified. In this case, how to get approved as editorial image? Did you send a model release and set it to editorial, or just set to editorial without any model release. Thanks a lot!

For shutterstock I just submitted them as editorials (no model release). For Pond5 I added the model release as well..

You want a basic color grade(adjusting exposure/contrast and boosting saturation) and I assume she shoots raw.

I shoot photos in RAW yes and I do a basic color grade, like Eli mentioned. I do not shoot videos in log. Pond5 and other stock sites do not want overly edited media, since buyers will often want flexibility to edit the content themselves: blog.pond5.com/13794-prepare-footage-upload-pond5/

You can use a smartphone, as long as you’re using it in a way to get good quality video. Daytime videos or vids with good lighting. (For example, night videos done with my smartphone are not good enough to be accepted.)

@@tonycapo8015 most iPhones are stabilized enough to not need a gimbal but shutterstock rejects most smartphone content.

@@tonycapo8015 Sure, especially if you're doing walking shots. But if you're just panning left to right, it's probably not necessary since newer phones have pretty good internal stabilization.

I think it means you can watch the video continuously without really knowing when it ends. Think of a clip of a cup of steaming coffee, you probably won't know when the clip started or when it end if it's recorded right.

I don’t, but I basically experiment with prices and see how unique it is: if it’s a clip that’s not very unique and has a lot of competition, I’ll price it on the lower end. If it’s super nice and rare, I’ll price it higher.

You can share it with someone that will edit and upload the footage, and than split the earnings. It is better than only keeping it on HDD

In your case it would probably make the most sense to use a service like Wirestock which does all of the captioning and keywording for you (all you do is upload it): wirestock.io/

Would you mind checking below question and answer them of you know. 1) What should be the appropriate size of an image. I tired resize them it goes below 3 MB and Shutter stock and other agency does not accept the same. 2) How do you check the quality of an image? 3) I captured extremely Sharp image even the faculty who taught me Photography at University confirmed it’s sharp and finest image, but shutter stock rejected stating quality issue. Well I guess it depends on where you live. The cost of living in my area is really high, so I could not live off of my stock income at this point. However, if I lived abroad or in a cheaper area, then I probably could make it work.

@@NicoleGlass Yeah I'm thinking about doing this as a side job after doing some research. I need the video footage anyway for advertising my drone services so I might as well sell some of that footage for a little side money while I'm at it. It seems like it might be a nice long term income if one can get 5K+ clips up and they are unique offerings or harder to create. I've watched several different people talk about the business and they all say it is a slow grind to making any money but can pay off over time.

I talked about that in other videos before but basically: you can still create newsworthy photos. Masks in groceries stores, documenting food shortages and things of that nature can be done anywhere. There may not be protests, but there's still models you can use to create concept images of something that's trending.

If it is profitable to work for stock agencies, why do you shoot for youtube, why do you spend valuable time you need for stock photos? Is it perhaps more profitable to record videos for youtube where you will get more money from commercials and convince people that it is profitable to work for stock agencies that may pay you to do so? Some people saying stock photography is dead then others saying you can make a fortune. I mean I can also fly to the moon with today's technology, but I wouldn't bank on that happening. Wish I knew where I could go to make more than pennies and dollars as a serious photographer aside from weddings.

I don’t think anyone is saying you can make a fortune, but you can definitely make a few hundred or thousand per month with a large video clip portfolio.

@@NicoleGlass Thanks for the response. I have been building up a more than decent videography rig. Just have to start focusing more on that and learning what video's sell. I just wonder with all the effort it takes to buy equipment (even though I already have) shoot the video, edit the video, upload the video and marketing, is the payout worth all the hours spent? Like what is the average profit you can make on a 10 second clip or whatever length is average?

I have some clips that have made a couple thousand dollars and some clips that have made nothing. I would never recommend buying gear solely for stock. But if you already work in the photo/video industry or already have a hard drive full of great clips, then selling these clips on the side is something that may interest you.

Step 1 - don't waste your time with stock photography, the time vs effort isn't worth it. Step 2 - take photos to sell direct to the public and local businesses, it will be a better earner.
