Stock Plugins vs Third Party Plugins - What YOU NEED to Produce a PRO MIX
In your DAW, you have everything you need to mix high quality songs without the need of third party plugins. You have EQ, Compressor, Reverb, Delay, and Saturation plugins, and in reality, that's all you need to produce a great mix.
But I’ve often been asked, “If stock plugins are all I need, why have I never seen the pros mixing with a lot of them?” Pros use third party plugins to achieve a very specific tone and sound or to achieve a specific task that works better with a third party plugin. It’s not always an issue of better or worse, but rather, very subtle differences that are specific to the track they’re working on.
But here’s the thing: if you don’t know how to use the basic plugins, you won’t be able to tease the nuances out of the 3rd party plugins. Until you learn the fundamentals of getting a great sound with the EQ, Compressor, Reverb, Delay, and Saturation plugins that your DAW provides and prioritize skills over tools, you’ll just be wasting your money on expensive premium plugins that won't make your mixes sound better in the end.

I have a project I call my Nemesis Project - I've remixed it about once a year since I started mixing. One year I did a version with ONLY Cubase stock plugins and it didn't sound anywhere near as good as the version with all my favorite premium plugs. 6 months later I couldn't tell which master was which. I constantly find that the Cubase channel eq is as good as any other option I have available - I just don't want to believe it because I've got some really pretty options. Stock can be like getting a processor upgrade too. RnR!

Hey Chris! I have a big problem, thats never happened before. I have a Elysia outboard Stereo EQ and i worked always with it. It was all fine. Today i tested a new Ssl Outboard Stereo Compressor from StamAudio. First thing i noticed, the sound gets noticeable fluctuations in Volume. Just with 1 effect inserted. No matter which of both. When i insert 2 effects i am not able to controll the input gain without clipping the return busses. The sound also distorts. I need a certain volume to send to the comp so i dont know what to do. Help me pls! Thx and regards from Italy. Michael

Thanks for this video! When I started recording and mixing at the end of the 80ies we had noisy 4 track tape recorders, old SM 58s and a crappy sounding reverb but lots of fun. I am totally happy with the technology today and have even more fun with the possibilities of my DAW. 30 years ago ... science fiction. TPP offer incredible possibilities. I personally decided to reduce them to less than ten (in fact Valhalla and Klanghelm). Big money and time saver. Instead, I invested in good speakers, good headphones and Pro-versions of DAW, editors, ... Emulations of LA2A, Fairchild or whatever are great but to be honest, what can we expect in 10, 15 years? Still emulations? Boring? In the end it´s much about marketing and money.

I just bought Cubase 11 pro a week ago and I'm honestly blown away by the quality of its stock plugins...coming from Reaper i didn't expect this. Not to say, Reaper plugins are bad, but i found them less intuitive to operate and appreciate that Cubase leaves you with more options.

Thanks Chris! I hired a friend of mine ( a Grammy nominee ) to mix 5 songs of mine, but he wanted 3rd-party plugs-ins he was used to. Since I use Cubase 10.5.2 and he uses ProTools, I wanted him to feel at home, so I bought whatever he thought we needed. (Eventide, Scheps, Focusrite, Waves and others...) The results were like you predicted. His talent produced better results than I was presently getting. I studied your mixing course, along with Greg Ondo's and Dom Sigalas' and my mixes are steadily improving using mostly Cubase plug-ins and a whole lot less CPU cycles. MORAL: Run what you brung and strive to do your best. All the Best to You and Yours.

Now you're reading my mind! This is exactly what I've been looking for. I use a lot of 3rd party with presets and I want the basics very clear in my mind first. Especially bass drum/bass relationship EQ and vocal presence. Also the basic FX setup; e.g. what are the standard setups. I spent an hour yesterday and got a better drum sound by using just Cubase, probably because I took much more time on each track. The only plugins I really missed were Waves Rider. That's a tough one to replicate easily. But by using a combination of the track presets and plug-ins, I got great results. It really helped me to analyze the elements of the presets; then bypass or adjust some, adding Studio EQ or Multiband compression. As you noted, the stock plugins are so much faster to load. Great work on this topic Chris. Mixing without understanding the basics - it's like drumming without learning the basic rudiments - you can't get the best results without the foundations. Awesome topic Chris...there’s a lot of confusion and misconceptions in the mixing/mastering industry that only 3rd party plugins give you the professional result. I personally mixed with stock plugins in Cubase for a long time until I purchased some 3rd party plugins that made my life much easier. Some of my favorite plugins are by WAVES. In my opinion, stock plugins versus 3rd party plugins is similar to a bicycle versus scooter. Stock plugins are like a bicycle, you get to your destination slower and you have to work harder. But 3rd party plugins are like a scooter. They get you to the same destination much faster with less work. When it comes to mastering, 3rd party plugins definitely have more advantages, in my opinion. Thanks again for your insights on this topic.

Got got that right...That's exactly my point. You first mixed with stock plugins, understanding the fundamentals. Then jumped on 3rd party plugs and actually hearing the difference and the benefits that you will get. I unfortunately did the opposite when I started, I had all the cracked plugins possible (I don't anymore) before fully understanding the fundamentals. In the end it slowed me down. So yes, a lot of 3rd party plugins have more advantages, no argument there, but not that useful if you don't have the skills first IMO. Thanks for sharing my friend!

I actually first use stock Cubase plugins BEFORE considering a 3rd party plugin. The channel strip and the EQ but also the multiband compressor for example. But, I can't deny that the Pro-Q 3 is phenomenal. I can't live without the dynamic sidechain EQ function. But I only have a handful of 3rd party plugins. I use the Slate Bundle, Valhalla Verb, FabFilter and some Soundtoys stuff. But that's basically all I need.

I just mixed a track for the KVR One Synth Challenge which allows only stock plugins and freeware. That is quite some challenge. Biggest problem for me was reverb, reverence if fine but not for everything, revelation i found quite weak compared to modern competitors. Hard to tame. A selection of a few good freeware plugins (TDR, Klanghelm, Valhalla) really helped.

I'm happy you did the experiment. Yes, Reverb can be a challenge. You know that with Reverence, you can import other Impulse Responses if you want. For Revelation Reverb, I wasn't a fan of that reverb, but that experiment forced me to learn it very well. I kinna like it now.. lol.

I agree that with longer reverbs it can actually sound nice (if you keep the modulation low) and useful. For short rooms, e.g. for drums, it seems to lack a bit of density imho.

I work with Cubase Pro and Ableton Live. Both have plenty of business-ready quality plugins. If you know what you're doing, you don't need anything else. The point is exactly this: first, you must learn what is mixing theory (volumes, balance, definition, etc etc), then you'll practice all of the fundamental tools (eq, dynamic, saturation, reverb/delay, limiter), because if you don't know what does what, you could pass your entire life buying things only because you don't know how to achieve a certain result. I totally agree with 11:22 (Also keep in mind that - sometimes - some mixing engineers, could decide to "use" their collection of expensive gear to convince customers that they NEED to spend money in their expensive studio ;)

I think the stock plugins in Cubase are really good! I could EASILY mix a full song with them. The Vintage Compressor really makes vocals pop. I'm certainly not a "Stock Plugin Apologist" however, because I use Waves and Slate stuff too!

Chris, im new to your mixing videos. But my biggest question is this. Take a drum setup for example. Do you start mixing the drums with steinbergs eq, as opposed to putting Slate VMR on it to shape them that way? I know Slate has some good plugins, but their mostly eq's and compressors. How do YOU go about a mix? Built in EQ's, and then Slate., or eq alone, or slate alone? And what about Fabfilters eq? Do you start with built in eq, or go straight to Pro Q? Thank you for your tips. Its greatly appreciated!!

Stock plugins is a good thing when very new to the industry still learning how everything works and sound. after getting good decent mixes with stock plugins it is a good thing to start using some third party plugins. Thank s for your videos...

I still don't understand how to import and initiate 3rd part plugins into cubase. I use stock plugins out of necessity. I've been learning as a hobby for quite a while and it's definitely difficult. RU-vid videos have been helpful.

Before buying a plug-in, ask yourself: 1. Will it improve my sound? (Will it actually?) 2. Will it improve my workflow? 3. Can I afford it?

i bought so much stuff in the beginning thinking buying stuff alone will give me a better Sound. I have a huge chunk of the Waves Plugins and at the moment i did not even do the Setup where i can use them. I have an old ICon Qcon pro Console Thing, and after having it for a long time, now i just went for setting it up again. Preparing my DAW to the point where i have a full mix Template that can be mixed only using the icon console. So i do not need to look at the Screen anymore while mixing. I have this console a long time, and thats the first time i am really trying to get the most out of that thing. And since i am lazy i can reuse this template and additional work is required to change it. So commitment and limitations are a thing, and i have to think about what i want to use before i even start the mixing progress. That way mixing got more interesting. Now its turning knobs, playing with faders and pushing buttons and not messing around with the mouse clicking throug menues, being overwhelmed with Options that break that worklfow. And i do not see meters whyle mixing anymore. Or there is no vision for an eq plugin, exept for small numbers on my small qcon screen to know where i am at. So hey i need to listen, compare fail, evolve, basically to get to know what i am working with. And its easier to find reasons for what i am doing and to memorize why i did it, or what i had in mind wile doing it. Also the mapping (i can not change it) for thirt party stuff is usually worse than the mapping for stock plugins. So i think twice about using those. It is less attraktive and they really need to bring something on the table since beautiful guis do not matter anymore . Anyway.. Nice well made content!

Aaaah is there any way to map the loop in and out selectors to a midi controller? Thats a small thing that still requires a solution in my case. At the moment i use the rewind option in transport controls. Thats more listening to stuff but i would like to have a better choice for those loop controls. I probably do have to invest more prep and research time in that point.

I stopped buying third party plugins a while ago. I had way too many problems getting them to work. Sadly, Waves ones especially. Truth be told, I found that just by using my stock plugins carefully and with some thought, I could get exactly what I wanted.

I have 15 tracks in a non-exclusive music library and 5 tracks in exclusive library and all mixed using stock Cubase plugins, Period! And on top of that, I only have 3 yrs of experience (started 2019) in this DAW composing game. It's the operator, not the tool.

To be honest I quite often try to compensate my weak skills with gear....if it's guitars or plugins. But what I have learned so far since I jumped into recording and mixing last year after owning Cubase for 20 years without using it much...there is a lot of tips and tricks I learned by watching YT videos which is good and helpful but that can't make up for experience. Another thing I found out is you have to develop a philosophy of mixing which suits your liking of good music. What I have planned for the future but not done yet are different scenarios like mixing with stock plugins, mixing with plugins only emulating old hardware like Abbey Road plugins or trying to emulate a 4-track recording and learning to deal with the limitations...that could be fun too

Definitely, that's the idea...By mixing with limitations, this is where you focus more on your skills.I thought of mixing a song with the Harrison Mix Buss 32C DAW. Limited with busses but a nice full console emulation as a full DAW :-)

Tokyo Dawn Labs, Klanghelm, Voxengo and ValhallaDSP are probably the best im class for free ( and paid) plugins. Honorable mentions go to TAL, Ignite Amps, Melda, Blue Cat Audio and too many others to list here :)

I second A m6/9 on Tokyo Dawn Labs plugs, especially Nova [ a dynamic EQ ]. I have a similar Waves plug and I don't remember it's name because I never use it [it's an absolute pig on computer resources]. I also found a free compressor I use called Easy Rider. It's recommended for drums and vocals but I only use it [ aggressively ] to give me a fantastic electric slide guitar sound ahead of a distortion plug or just the amp drive circuit in the signal path. For paid plugs I have everything Native Instruments offers and 2 duds from Waves. Elements doesn't give you quite as many options as I have in the Pro version but what you do have is solid stuff, and before you go to Waves and other 3rd party stuff I'd look for free plugs if you think you're missing something first, and upgrade to Cubase Pro as a second [ more bang for your buck ] option

I personally think if you have the skill, knowledge, experience and a good ear you should be able to get pro level results with the stock plugins in Cubase (or whatever DAW you use). Sure, third part plugins can be brilliant and can add more possibilities, make life easier etc, however far too many people over-rely on external plugins to do the work for them as a crutch instead of developing their music production skills. No plug ins can make up for lack of skill.

To be honest, anyone who says you should never use stock plugins probably hasn't developed their skills enough in using the plugins (or I would question that at the very least). I'm actually saying this from experience where I used to almost only use 3rd party plugins. Now that I know what I'm doing more I find myself using more and more stock plugins. Basically, if you need a 3rd party plugin, there has to be a good reason for it (ie. gives you new functionality, features, etc). If you are getting the 3rd party plugin only because it "sounds better", it's wise to ask if that's actually from the plugin or from skills. This is not to say this won't be the case, but there have definitely been some times where I've been disappointed in buying the 3rd party plugins based on "sound". (EDIT: Also, love your videos. They've helped me a lot in moving from FL Studio to Cubase)

Actually i mostly use my logic stock plugins...i embellish with my total studio t racks but not much i mostly use tracks for mastering ...but them logic plugins dial in real fast

I think that with the latest plugins provided by cubase we can mix a complete song 100%, I think that 4-5 years ago it was not possible with same results. I noticed you have UAD plugins but also I saw a Yamaha audiocard, is it right? I was thinking about buying a usb apollo or arrow or similar, mostly to use UAD plugins. Do you think this kind of usb audio card could have conflict with motu 24 i/o? I mean, I know that cubase can use only one asio driver per time. As far as you know, could I use my motu sound card as main asio driver and the usb UAD device for plugins only? Cheers

Let's face it...anyone who takes music production, mixing or composing seriously are ONLY using native (stock) plugins in their DAW. Or at least that's my experience whenever I meet actual in-industry people.

I think anyone who cannot produce with stock plugins isn't using Cubase. I only have like three SSL plugins I use but I don't even use my Izotope plugins anymore and I loved those and used to upgrade them every year. Cubase Pro literally has everything I need.

I'm just started using Cubase 10.5 and when i try to record (midi, audio etc) it pops up "can't record it Disk full" How can I solve this, can anyone answer me🙏

Chris one question if I want to be a great mixer. Do you have to go to the school? or who could help me in the process from the scratch as a beginner mixer?

Lots of the greatest mixers didn't go to school. They came up learning through the recording studios that they interned/worked at.

@@marstudios7879 It's ok. Most people don't anymore. That way of coming up in the industry now a days is getting pretty rare. The best thing to do is focus on learning and beefing up your skills. Then focus on getting clients and making sure your clients are extra happy :)

to tell you the truth Chris 'm running Cubase elements and there is more then enough stock plugin to keep a person busy the only plugins that i went 3rd party on was compressors I like the stock compressors but they just dont have enough color in them.

Yes, with Cubase Element, you have a bit less to work with compared to Cubase Pro unfortunately

I went crazy with 3rd party vsts over the years...I regret it now other than a tape sim or reverb. The rest are a huge time waste.

As i always say, if you cant get at least a decent mix using stock plugins, you're not mixing right

And also (despite the illegal side of it) this is also a problem you create for yourself with piracy. You can download hundreds of plug-ins but still don't have the skill to use them (I've been guilty of it). Since I stopped pirating and started buying I take plug-ins more serious and learn the ins and outs of them because I've paid for them and know what they cost me!

A lot will have pirated plugins, unfortunately, and like you said, a lot of them still don't have the skills to use them

@@mixdownonline I think a lot of beginners start like that and it is a good way to explore what you think you need and to find out what you don't need. I don't think that is necessarily wrong. As long as you end up buying them in the long run when you start making money with them. I just wish some developers would make buying their plug-ins as easy as pirating them, because for some it is a pain to go the legal way sadly...

Hnnnn.... This coming from a guy with a Chandler Curve Bender in the background, you think he's not using that? People don't believe this theory. As I understand he reckons; if you're a composing and mixing expert then you don't need 3rd party plugins and only uses one DAW stock plugins (Logic stock plugins are great, it does down from there). Right. How many in the world fall into this category of expert mixer? 99.9999%. The rest of us need any edge we can get to make our sound pop. So just go and demo Acoustica Audio, Fab Filter, Soundtoys, Gullfoss, Soothe2 and UAD and wait for the sales and use mixing lectures RU-vid for guides on what plugins the pros use (Hint: Fab Filter, , Soundtoys and Soothe) . These plugins blow away most stock plugins out the water, and create a very precise, musical and inspirational options that stock plugins don't. You can get great stuff from Plugin Alliance and Boutique in the sales. For $500 you can get a load of amazing plugins that WILL make your tacks WAY better than stock plugs.... Oh,... unless you're a genius.

First of all I don,t have a Chandler Curve Bender in the background, I wish I had though ;-) Have you watched the full video??? Cause I actually started saying that I use both, stock and 3rd party plugins. The point of my message is that you need to focus on your skills more than the tools, third party plugins won't give you better mixes of you don't have some mixing skills to at least be able to hear the difference. You cannot imagine how many people spend hundreds of dollars on plugins and gear and are not even able to run a compressor properly. I've criticized a lot of mixing done with fancy plugins that sounded unprofessional because these people had problems understanding the fundamentals of mixing. You don't need to be a genius mixer to produce a pro mix with stock plugins. I don't consider myself a genius mixer like Andrew Scheps and Jacquire King and I can easily mix a full song with stock plugins only and make it sound good. Of course I miss some of my regular plugins and analog gear when I do so but that's not the point. If I had to spend one hour taking about mixing with Andrew Schelps, trust me that the last question I'm gonna ask him is what 3rd party plugin he works with, It would be all about mixing techniques more than anything else. You should try it as a challenge, mix a couple of songs with stock plugins and try to make it sound as pro as you do with 3rd party plugins. I'm telling you, you will learn a lot :-)
