I’m am a long time prepper (20 years) in Oklahoma, during our outages this year, we used PAPER plates because they were also burnable, so they got tossed in the fireplace after meals to keep the fire going, same with paper towels. Also had many packages of wet wipes and used those to clean flatware.
Hi from Hondo Texas! Last Wednesday night was the storm of all storms. We had a Tornado and a massive hail storm. The Tornado took out our pump house and part of our pump. It rained for 3 days after that and we have to wait for the land to dry before a truck can be driven on it for someone to fix it. We have no water at all. The hail damaged our vehicles (made them undriveable), our house and destroyed our garden. Windows were blown out of the bedrooms. The hail came through 3 layers of roofing materials (tin, plywood, sheetrock). The holes they made caused leaks in every room of the house. Roofing materials are all bought out. We can't find them anywhere. We lost power for 2 days and 6 days (so far) without water. The flooding outside made it impossible to walk around the yard. I had to use our camp stove inside the house. I am able to buy gallons of water and now getting water from a friend. We hadn't had a shower in 5 days. We were finally able to buy a camp shower (bag you add water to) yesterday to get cleaned up. I recommend having those. Do you know how many gallons your toilet tank using to flush? Do you have that water as back up? Do you have a way to get the water out of your water heater to use? Have water for a hand washing station. Hand sanitizer is only good for so long on your hands. After a while, it gets horrible. Have separate water to drink. In all honesty, you think you're prepared but in reality you're not. If we didn't have a generator, we would have lost everything in our freezer. I have canned foods, but no way to wash the dishes to warm them up in. When prepping, think of ways to cook, eat, clean without water, power and even propane if that runs out. Propane is out here because of all the surrounding areas are experiencing the same thing. Keep that in mind. The things you may need may not be there when you need them. Remember, I'm on day 6 using my preps with no where else to go close by. Hope this gives you some insight. God bless!
I'm so sorry! That's alot to deal with. What you are sharing will help alot of people to really think things through when trying to prepare . Praying for your family!🙏
🙏✝️ I can't imagine how hard it is for you. I am in Arizona so hot 🔥🥵 summers, being without water and electricity is what we experience mostly. My heart goes out to you.
Margie Stokes may you find strength in the Lord in your time if need. I was 16/17 when we lost everything in a forest fire year was 2000. It was one of the hardest times of my life but also one of the biggest blessings. My family lived in tents for about 6 months until it was time for school to start back. We got loads of help from family and friends but choose to live in tents on the property. It taught me so so much about life. And now that I'm prepping again and reading your story. I pray you find the silver lining and keep keeping on. My prayers 🙏 go up for you and your family and everyone affected by tornadoes. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
God bless you and your family through this disaster! Thank you for sharing! That's exactly what I've been trying to tell my husband..just because we have a generator doesn't mean we'll be able to get more propane during a disaster! Praying for you.
Kimmy my son heard you say about 72 hr kits , now he's looking for backpack 🎒, so we can put some together. Spending Quality time with my kids and talking to then about safety. So thank you
We have a homemade fire pit in our yard. Used it only to burn branches amd made Smores. Then our power went out last spring a few times. Used our oven rack to grill and stared using it every weekend in the summer since we don't have a grill!
Ya gotta get mountain pie makers.. u can do egg and sausage sandwiches, toasted cheese, pizza, fruit pies etc... its endless what u can make with these.
I PREP BY WHATS ON SALE---THERE ARE WEEKS THAT EVERYTHING I BUY IS ON SALE OTHER THAN FRESH VEGGIES AND FRUIT---LIKE LAST WEEK ONE OF MY FAVORITE STORES HAD BONELESS SKINLESS CHICKEN BREASTS ON SALE FOR 99 CENTS A POUND---HAD ROOM IN FREEZER SO I BOUGHT 18 POUNDS SAVING A DOLLAR A POUND OFF REGULAR PRICE
I was about to comment on that. I don't have an arbitrary list of what I am going to prep every month. What I prep week to week all depends strictly on the sales at my local grocery store.
I do the same. Last month pork shoulder was on sale 99 cents a pound any meat less than a dollar is purchased for the freezer, canned or dehydrated. I did 4 smoked and canned and then 6 baked and what wasn't eatin was put into the freezer for fast meals of pulled pork can make more than sandwiches with.
Yup, Learned this method on buying what is on sale that week and what meals I can make with it was a way to start saving money on my groceries then seeing your (pantry)stock pile has also helped cut the many grocery trips that I had to do. This month of may I bought in bulk my sugar, all purpose flour and pancake mix 25lbs bags each. Last month Was my rice, cooking oil and beans also in 25lbs. I say I am good for at least 3 to 6months on all this but fresh fruits and vegetables is my only grocery list now and sales on meats.
We pick up our grass fed, local quarter cow today! 172 pounds @$2.00 per pound plus $112 for the processing. I’m itching to get my garden going, but in Michigan we must wait one more month.
Whenever I get fast food to take home I always ask for cutlery. I then store them in a ziplock bag I keep in my kitchen. When the bag gets full I sort and rebag by type. I feel like I scored when I get the fork, knife, spoon, napkin, salt and pepper combo in plastic. I occasionally get asked to bring plastic ware to social gatherings where there will be food. I will pick up bags/boxes of forks, spoons, knives at the Dollar Tree and bring home what wasn’t used. Also as I usually stay to help clean up I noticed most people who do bring the disposable cutlery just leave the extras after the event and if no one else wants them I’ll take them. I recent graduated from Ziplock bags to plastic snap top shoe boxes. The stuff really adds up and it’s nice to have forks at birthday party cake time.
I live in northern Missouri. We have a large population of Amish around us and a couple of Amish bulk food stores nearby too. They are a great resource for bulk food and can order just about anything you can think of even if they don’t carry it in their store. A few weeks ago I ordered 100 pounds of black beans and pinto beans, 50 pounds of navy beans, 100 pounds of raw sugar, 100 pounds of brown sugar, 200 pounds of oat groats (this is a new item for us) and 50 pounds of quick oats. This is added to our other food stores. I would add that I can a lot of the dried beans so that they are ready to use. It takes a lot of water to cook beans and in an emergency situation, water is at a premium. I don’t want to use all my water cooking beans. I love to garden, can and dehydrate food. We raise our own chickens for eggs and meat, also pork and beef. We do all of our own butchering and it is good to know where our food comes from. God bless you all!
Great series Kimmie! Would lalso ove to see how how your newlywed daughter is setting up her food storage now with less people in her family and different space challenges for storage.

I'm including this month things our pets might need. I noticed last year when covid hit getting food for our pets was difficult. So every chance I can I'm picking up extra food for our cats and dogs and litter. Litter is not just good for the cats you can have it on hand to clean up spills and to soak up grease and oil in your garage.
Kitty litter is also good in case of power outage and you can actually make a little compost potty bucket. After you go just sprinkle about a cup of Kitty litter over top. If you don't have the extra water to throw in the bowl to flush.... Our last power outage lasted 5 days..my son was going down to the river about 5 miles away and bringing home 5 gallon buckets of water for flushing toilet..2 qt. Pitcher is perfect for pouring into bowl and gravity flushes it.. and for boiling to wash dishes..

So May 1st I try to jump start my Hurricane supply before the first day of Hurricane season, but thanks to your videos I have been preparing since January 1st. Last month I focused on can soups, pet food, water, and canned meats. Kimmie, thank you for providing these kind of videos!
Been buying chicken on sale and canning it. Concentrated on bread flour to add with my wheat berry flour, potato flakes and still adding to honey. Also trying to increase canned beans & fruits. I picked up any dried beans that were 5/$5 every time I went and 1 can of salmon at every sale ( we love salmon cakes but it's not cheap!)
i truly enjoy your content, started watching your videos last month, i have a stocked pantry and now starting long term... thank you for sharing your knowlegde. most prep videos are scary..yours is up lifting.
Years ago I made utensil and napkins rolled up and tied with ribbon for my mom's 70th bday party. I recently found about 12 in a box. If you have kids, sit them at a table with a package of napkins, utensils and small rubber bands. Roll them up and store in big zip locks for emergencies. It's like being at a restaurant and eliminates extra work and clutter
Im from oklahoma. The beginning of this year was hell 😓. And now with tornadic weather happening it seems like we can't catch a break. Lol. Thanks for the tips! I enjoy your videos!
Yes on the plastic ware and the propane! I’m in Texas and we didn’t lose water but we were without gas so we used our grill so I was soooo happy we had both of our tanks full. My budget for June is to get another tank just in case. Thank you for these videos, they teach me new ideas while refreshing my brain and reminding me of stuff I do and know I need to do! Do you have a video of what your family “actually” has for your 72h bug out bags and resources?
I think something very important to add. During a major disaster, you could also lose phone and/or computer use. I made a notebook years ago that I divided into sections, and have recipes, medical remedies, how to's, etc. Also, don't forget about feminine products, they can be used for more than one purpose.
We have a sun oven (think slow cooker), a small camp stove that runs on butane, and a thermal cooker (Saratoga jack) to help conserve fuel. We have multiple ways because we're here in Utah so during a sun oven out in a blizzard may not work, so we have indoor alternatives. I also live both the thermal and sun oven cookers, because in a real emergency you may not have a ton of time to spend on cooking, if your having to clean up the mess or dig people out of rubble or something. It will be nice to have a hot meal waiting away the end if a long tiring day.
Vinegar is not hard to make. Purchase one bottle of bragg's and never buy vinegar again. You can use the peelings of a apple to make more. You can use just about any fruit or combinations of fruit even rotten fruit to make vinegar. I use cleaning vinegar which is 6 % acidity instead of the 5% that most use for cleaning. Heinze makes the cleaning vinegar.
@@tiffanymengor217 I guess I have been doing okay, in my attempts at prepping. I have a bottle of Bragg's in the back of a cupboard. I will make a list of it's purposes, and hang it on the bottle, and a copy of it in my BIG BOOK. I have a huge binder with SO many creative ways to clean...info about projects first aid, health, killing mosquitoes, gardening and prepping etc. After I am gone they will find it, and laugh, but they will use it!
Love this series! Definitely stocking up on paper plates and plastic utensils this month. I don't normally use them but it would take a lot of extra water to clean plates & utensils in an emergency situation! Also stocking condiments and spices. Thanks so much for all the info!!
I canned soup last month. I also canned milk (I know. I know. Not suggested.) I stocked up on canning jars/lids. I bought a digital canner. I organized my cool shed for my storage and took an inventory. I also waterglassed (limed) two buckets of eggs. I also canned potatoes and planted a garden in 9 garden boxes.
To be honest, I put all my new spices in clean dry canning jars because they stay fresher for longer. I've had some spices for a few years and they're still fresh and good to eat
People would be surprised how well the pressed paper bowls work. No issues with hot stews or cold ice-creams. I prefer them over the plastic bowls because I can compost them. Also, the traditional "paper bowl" from a name brand manufacturer are coated which don't break down very well in my experience. Keep preparing ladies and gentlemen! Be well and joyful!
Thank you for info. I find that as a household of two (kids are out and on their own) I am throwing out more veggies and fruits because we don't use it up like we did when kids were home. I am going to give Thrive Live a try. I think the smaller cans will be great for the two of us. PS: Just found you site a couple weeks ago, it's great.
P-38 can openers! A P-38 can opener is the little manual can opener that military use. There are also P-51's but I find the 38 easier to use. I like buying them in bulk and have them stored in my camper/camping goods, in a bug out bag (BOB), a few in my kitchen drawer, and randomly taped to a #10 can inside the box in which those big cans were shipped, just incase. I highly suggest getting a bag of these and practice using them!! One can find these online in bulk for about 5 bucks. A great little tool for next to nothing in price. :)
@@peppysdotcom I live in Maine, we can lose power for hours sometimes, some instances have been days without power because of winter storms (in 1998) so we try to be as prepared as we possibly can be.
@@Sassyirishwoman I live in northern Wisconsin. We lose power sometimes for 2 weeks or more in winter. Preparedness has always been a way of life here!
@@littlehummingbird1015 I had one had wanted it since last year, sad to say had to give away, wasn't supposed to have it. I live in studio apartment & fuel said do not store in living area. Very concerned of blowing up my spot so got rid of it. Only thing I can safely hide away is tea lights. I stick on canned goods I can warm with tea lights. They do have a tea light oven the big one uses 20 tea light candles. Try to get the small one sd out
This was a great reminder to stock up on propane. We love to camp, so we have lots of camp stoves, but we don't always have propane. Last month, we got another order from thrive life with lots of veggies. We are so impressed with the quality, especially the onions. We always do a $100 order so we get free shipping!
This series is awesome. Not new to preparedness, but this is a great way for me to check how I’m doing. Thanks for posting! (Love love love the LDS book!) along with paper towels, coffee filters have hundreds of uses & super cheap! This month was Thrivelife spring sale. I got some fun goodies for long term
I have been throughly enjoying this series. It has really given me new ideas on what I should stock up on. I have been keeping an on going list of items to keep an eye out for.
Thanks Kimmie!! Also buy the twist can openers at the Dollar Tree. If the power go out or your camping you can't use an electric one. I stocked up on tuna and soups last month.
New regular viewer. This month is about reorganzing the second pantry room. Last month i dry-packed #50 of oatmeal. I would like to add to that next month. We have a shelf unit to put together for our water/ beverage items. Can it really be May, already?! Be safe, Be prepared, be blessed
So many great ideas and reminders; ironically when I did my end of month pantry inventory, I realized I was low on several of my spices and condiments. This month I will definitely be focused on stocking those up!!
Whenever I don't keep up with your videos, my kitchen becomes a mess. LOL I was wondering why my kitchen was such a disaster lately, and it turns out my day job has been keeping me away from your videos for almost a month. Argh! Time to binge-watch and get my kitchen back under control. Can't thank you enough for all you do to inspire joyful and creative home-keeping. ❤️
For those living in the country and having a septic tank vinegar is very good for it and so is old yeasr that you might have in the refrigerator or new.. I put a packet down the toilet every month the whole three packet strip and a quart of vinegar saves on your septic system and a lot cheaper than some others.
Started watching you, bought a lds preparedness book, bought Carla Emery's book, and we have a bulk order to put in soon. That's what I'm doing this month. I had the original emery book about 50 years ago hand made by her but eventually left it behind after many moves. Blessings.
I always say 'yes' to bread making. Started learning in January, I have regular white, wholewheat and cornbread down, want to try new graham flour that we have here, I just love that we can have a variety. I am looking forward to those videos.
I enjoy watching you i only been doing this for about 2 weeks now have long way to go before i can say i happy with what i have i use more than i save.
Watch commodities prices. The price of corn, both for animal feed and people food, is to be up by over 40% by the end of summer. That means higher meat prices and things like tortillas and corn chips, as well as canned corn.
@@marybethm.9952 We grow about 40 acres of field corn every year. Now,the price of the seed corn, fertilizer, and weedkiller (I know, it's "bad" but you can't grow corn without it!!) has all gone up so much, and the availability is scarce, that it's almost too costly to plant as we never know what the weather will do. We'd be lucky to even break even this year!
i have lots of plasticware and condiments by saving what has been included in our takeout meals! You've already paid for them and they're in individual packets, and the plastic ware has a napkin (most of them). A cheap way to stock up! You can also wash out the cup or bowl sized take out containers and save them for emergencies. They have lids so you can cover them easily if you don't have other ways to do that :)
It's coming into flu season here in Australia so this month I am stocking up on things like cough drops chest rub vitamins soups jelly (jello for americans) 2 minute noodles (ramen) and stuff like that.
Beef jury and for light when the power goes out is the flashlight 🔦. I used the gig one with the large battery but my husband at probably a hardware store he got this seven inch flashlight that took a couple of AA orAAA . It lights up the room and make sense. Ours is red .
We stocked up on pasta, cereal, meats, drinks. Even though me and my mom are vaccinated I am still high risk for COVID so we are trying to stay stocked up so we don’t have to go out a lot. Paper towels and toilet paper are starting to get low at our local store so we are trying to stay stocked up on that. We don’t have a lot of storage due to moving to a condo a few months ago.
Use the space under the beds or make space under the beds behind and or under the couch. I have buckets everywhere my home cover with table cloth and board on top never know works great for side boards
Great video ! I need to take it week by week and focus on things just for that week .I'm gonna start that this week with spices .Lots of great information.Thank you
Great info thank you. During summer our kitchen get unbearably hot to cook in so we use our BBQ Grill to do our cooking of meals and also use it as an oven for baking. We are amazed how many of our friends are surprised to hear you can bake in your BBQ. Lol
Hard red winter wheat as well as hard white winter wheat 50 lb bags as well as a good grinding mill even a extra put in a mylar bag with oxygen absorbers and in a food grade bucket same as 50nlb bags rolled oats do the same way. Water storage water filtration like a big burkey and others lot of propane oil aluminum foil good cast pans kettles and a rocket stove. Good wood burning stove for winter to stay warm and cook. Take notes or buy books on baking and cooking prep food
Asian family so we include soy sauce powder in our food storage so lots of black bean paste, chili sauces, Japanese MAYO, fish sauce, rice wine, rice vinegar, balsamic vinegar, so much more.
New Subbie. Watching from Canada great details. For the past few years now I have a pantry, short term and long term food storage from watching blogs like yours. Also, I use a lot of vinegar for many things around the house like fabric softener, cleaning floors, appliances like the dishwasher and washing machine etc. This month I am concentrating on toiletries like shampoo, conditioners, coconut oil, basic make up, dyes, body creams lotions and different OTC drugs for emergency. I need to stock up on those items above. Normally, I am only purchasing things when on sale so I can buy plenty at least for 6months or more if expiry date is good. Or when the sale is on go to different store to price match the items and get the maximum allowed. This sometimes, gives a longer expiry date because that store do not have a sale.
Awesome tips! Keep in mind if you go the plastic utensil route not only May you be with out water but no trash service as well. Took our town 6 weeks before FEMA let the trash service back in 🤢
Definitely going to reload the condiments. I'm also running low on bread flour, so I'll get some of that this month too. Costco run will be for canned roast beef and canned chicken (maybe) and Maggi instant Indian noodles. I'm also keeping my eye out for n95 masks, because it will soon be wildfire season in my part of the country. VERY important to have n95 (or better) to filter the wildfire smoke, a cloth mask is useless against smoke. I already have us stocked up on quality HEPA filters for our hvac system to keep the indoor air clean when/if things start getting smoky.
I learned about vinegar in laundry, from prepper videos of making laundry detergent. Didn't work for me but when I wash on hand I use it then. I live in building with laundry management would have an issue if they seen me put vinegar in the dispenser. I have yet to stock paper goods for kitchen. I have the fold down pan & the Stanley cups to cook. I have to start practicing my tea light cooking very small 1/2 serve of rice. I been stocking broth case water run short.
@@KristenHH I freeze dry my in from my garden. I go north to Idaho to their community pantry to put my freeze dried stuff into cans. I don't trust the mylar bags as mice can get into them.
@@maryjane-vx4dd I have been focusing on proteins for my freeze dryer, but I like to do things from the garden as well! Not everyone has a garden or a freeze dryer, so I figured I'd put that out there. Also 3lbs of dehydrated onions for $12 is almost cheaper than buying them fresh, so it's a good deal for many! :)
Expiration dates are only there because the FDA demands it. Canned or cryovacked foods are safe to keep and eat past the "experation" date. Same with medications. Now medications and vitamins will begin to lose their potency after a few years.
In my area, Dollar General has great prices on condiments. I wait till Saturday and use my $5.00 off $25.00 purchase coupon. If you purchase during the week, you will have a coupon on your receipt, or just download the DG app.
Condiments are something that I think differently on: I get more small containers incase we don't have refrigeration. I hope that I can use it before it goes bad. Also, I get those little jars of chopped garlic from the produce section
Great tips. I love how you say Worcestershire sauce. In the UK we just mainly say Worcester sauce. Even tho I struggle to eat solid food - I have Gastroparesis/slow stomach emptying - one item I have to store is Heinz salad cream. It’s great. I’m in Texas and I lost power a day before I lost water. And even after the water came back on it needed to be boiled so washing dishes was not fun! I cooked with Sternos, in my living room.
I live in Alaska what I do for power outages is generator and lots of cords three freezers and a frigerator And two neighbors on a 3000 Honda. For water I have what is called a juicer steamer stainless steel this gives endless distilled water and a berkey either way both work for removing the ickies. lived without power and water longer than with learned how to have clean safe water. I have a charcoal grill and miles and miles of trees that have been burned that is what charcoal is twice burns hotter. I do keep a couple hundred pounds of propane but for incase I run out of fuel for the generator and have to can the freezers up. If I lived where I couldn't get water first time I heard a storm coming I would fill a water bladder that fits the bath tub.
