In this video, I go through the major steps that I use when painting an HO Scale locomotive shell: washing the shell, choosing the paint, preparing the airbrush and air compressor, putting down the primer, painting the shell, and giving it a gloss coat for decals.

Thank you for posting this. My 15 yr old and I are brand new with using an air brush and painting his trains. Your video was a great start for us.

Awesome, I am glad this could be helpful! I think airbrushing gets easier the more you do it. Good luck getting started with it!

Probably the best video demonstrating the simplicity of the process of airbrushing a model train. Seems easy honestly.

That is great to hear, thanks for the comment. I really do think airbrushing is pretty simple, especially when using water-based paints.

@@emillerz yeah, airbrushing is going to be my next practice project. I hear Trucolor paint is also airbrush ready paint but a bit of thinner cant hurt no one.

Im using spray paint for my customs. It ended up being extra thick for the one i painted to look like railway series Percy, and i accidently let my second project get too thick up top, and tryting to fix that made it worse. Its currently soaking in alcohol. The primer went in well, and the paint went well on the sides. Tried to get a top part... thats where it went wrong. Oh well

Eric - I too am a fan of model flex paints. They always seem to work well!

Thanks for the comment, I totally agree! I have been painting with them for about 15 years now and they have never failed. Plus, they are still in business and continue to make great railroad colors.

Good video 👍 have tried acrylics but never really happy and end up back on lacquers but nearly all my Floquil is gone now. Noticed your air pressure, have never gone this high, maybe my enamel and lacquer pressures are too low for the acrylics??

Sorry for the late reply on this, I have been busier than usual and have a lot of catching up! I have heard that with acrylics, the pressure needs to be a little higher, so that might help you out.

This was so informative and easy to watch, thank you for taking the time to document your process and share it online. I'm just beginning to dive into model railroading and this video will be extremely helpful going forward. New subscriber here, thank you!

You have this pretty much down, the Badger 350 is a great all around Single action that actually has 3 needle sets made for it, Fine, Medium, Heavy and will allow you better control and results, I only hope you are using a compressor as those cans are horrible lol. The paints are a good brand but usually require a bit more thinning as you can see by the spatter you were getting. Timbertech has a really nice $25-$30 dual action that is amazing for a cheap brand but I recommend using metal polish on the needle to make it function almost as good as a $200 Iwata. That will take a lot of polishing about 1 hrs worth of buffing and reapplying. That tip also works with any of the cheapo airbrushes which is the main culprit in their lackluster out of the box performance, just polish those needles! Great video! I am always stripping old train cars and locos and restoring them and removing most paint even with older sets using Purple Super clean or Purple power seems safest and best in results.

Do the Badger airbrushes come with that adaptor, or is that a separately-purchased attachment?

Maybe a goofy question but on decals can you custom make your own ? Just subscribed to your channel

Sorry for the super late response, I have been taking a break from videos and plan to start up posting again soon on a new layout that I will be building. I have done custom decals from a couple different places. I recently used Precision Design Co (pdc.ca) and have also used Highball Graphics and have heard good things about Circus City decals.
