I am learning grade 11U chem in Canada through TVO ILC learning. The online self-paced curriculum has been fantastic up until teaching about limiting and excess reactants. The 5 steps they outline and related formulas are one in the same yet very confusing as compared to this matrix. Still a bit puzzled about who came up with this matrix but at the very least I was able to get the same answer while following a different method that I can recreate in the future. Thank you!

A trick to find the limiting reagent can be like this. Find the number of moles of reactants given by the given amount in gm, then divide it with the mole coefficient of balanced equation for that reactant. We will get the smallest ratio for a reactant then, that is our limiting reagent. We will not have to calculate that long. Although really nice explanation by melissa.👍

In the last part of the problem, can I not use the limiting reactant (FeCl2) to find out bow much of the excess reactant we need for the reaction? I've done it this way before, but now my answer is not matching and I'm checking the steps over but can't find anything to change. Edit : I found my mistake. It was a silly one.

Hello Melissa, I was wondering, I am in Gen chem 2 college level and I watched your titration and buffer video and it was explained excellent. However I was given this titration problem and I was really wondering if you can go through it? I am wondering how should I go about asking you this ? thank you so much! A 0.125 M solution of sodium hypochlorite. A 50.0-mL sample of this sodium hypochlorite solution is titrated with 0.125 M hydrochloric acid (HCl, strong acid) at 25 o C. What is the pH of the solution after 10 mL of HCl has been added beyond the equivalence point of the titration. Sodium hypochlorite is a basic salt, with the formula NaClO, and the acid ionization constant of its conjugate, hypochlorous acid (HClO), is 3.5 x10-8 at 25 o C.

Hi Melissa! I love your videos, but there is a part that confuses me. Should we really use the Theoretical Yield to calculate the mass of consumed excess reactant? I compared your videos on Limiting reactants to other videos. And I found out that they use the given value of limiting reactant to calculate for the mass of consumed excess reactant. Help! i'm on the verge of confusion now):

What I have a hard time understanding is why each value is the numerator vs denominator. For example why do we put 1 mole of FeCl2 over 126.75 grams in the first step instead of 126.75 grams over 1 mole of FeCl2 and same thing for all the other values there after? How do i know which to put as the numerator and which to put as the denominator?
@69Paulita
@69Paulita 2 года назад
The ending unit that is to be the final answer should always be the only unit (s) that do NOT cross out. ex: How many seconds in 4 and a half hours? 4.5hrs-- (60min/1hr) (60 sec/1min) =( here we can cross out the units of hours, and units of minutes. What we are left with is only the unit of seconds. We multiply across, and the answer is : There are 16,200 s in 4.5 hrs. Same exact concept with conversions in chemistry. The unit we intend to end up with should be the only one that doesn't completely cross out, and the conversions should start with the first conversion having the unit you are wanting to remove placed at the bottom of the fraction, so it crosses out. Hope this makes sense? It may not be exactly what you are asking, but the concept is always the same when it comes to the ending units. Hope you figured it out by now though!
@allys103
@allys103 3 года назад
how do you know to write down “1 mol” or 3 mol” as shown in the first problem for example? why is the first FeCl 1 mol but the second is 3 mol? and why is NaCl 1 mol?
@caramelapples6821
@caramelapples6821 2 года назад
i was confused on this too but I think it’s because it’s saying for example if you have the equation: 2Fe + 3Na -> 4FeNa (I made this up) The ratio between moles will be 2:3:4, so when doing dimensional analysis you are saying that when multiplying between moles the ratio of 2 moles of one element means that the other element will have 3 moles. So for that specific part in the problem when she used one mole instead of three moles it’s because the grams for that element are based on one mole not three. But when multiplying between moles of those two elements it using two and three because that’s the ratio between them and you’re trying to find how many grams or moles are in those elements with those specific moles. So when she used one mole she was trying to find the amount of grams are in one mole of that element, and when she used three moles that’s when she was trying to convert that grams to the amount of moles in the problem. I’m not sure if that made sense at all, I’m trying to make it make sense in my head and put it into words sorry if that didn’t help
