The speaker's book 'More Than Happiness' - a comparative and critical analysis of Stoic and Buddhist ethics - is probably the best work of popular philosophy I've ever read. It asks serious questions of both philosophies without resorting to the sweeping statements and catch-all condemnations of hostile commentators. Does a fine job of distilling highly complex systems of thought too.
Brilliant explanation and synthesis of Buddhism & Stoicism... I feel the same - I have to reject the metaphysics of both traditions... (though understand many others are fine with the metaphysical components)... i’ll certainly be getting the book! Thanks so much for posting👍
Thank you for sharing. In Early buddhism, to practice the Right mindfulness, u must have Right View and right virtue(Sila) first. In my own experience, is really important to have right view and virtue before practice right mindfulness. Because mindfulness is like a vehicle, if u use it wrongly, will bring u out of the path. If it's Right - Mindfulness, it's should lead us to Right-Samadhi and the end of suffering.
If the non egoic state is beyond thought emotion memory, how can one describe it as bliss nirvana. Surely describing it is a memory of its existence and therefore another egoic state.
Compassion isn't the same as empathy. Equanimity is not passivity, and is more about not being attached to outcome i.e. "must be a certain way." This woman is clueless in many ways.
