Wonderful piece of film featuring people who actually cared for the city. Agree with the comments here on Hanley, now it’s a shadow of what it once was and I avoid it like the plague which is sad when you think about it.

Thankyou for this fascinating film, I especially enjoyed Shelton Bar. My late Dad worked there for over 30 years he got made redundant in the about 1979/80. He worked on the Kaldos( not sure of spelling). He always said if he had his time over her work there all over again. I remember the children's Christmas parties.

Lovely hearing the old 'potteries towk' like my grandad spoke. I remember as a child a friend visiting my grandparents with me - although she lived local she went to a private school and spoke 'queens english' and didn't mix with any other local children. She couldn't understand my grandads accent and kept whispering in my ear 'what did he say?' Fond memories of the 50's and 60's and my childhood in the potteries and the long gone grandparents generation and lost contacts with schoolfriends although many have now also passed. 'Cosna kick a bow agin a wow n' bost it'

I went up Hanley with me mum on the bus 2 weeks ago. As a little girl I loved that place. There was John Lewis with the big spiky man on the side of the building and there was always a man busking with a monkey puppet on his knee near Woolies. The town had a great atmosphere. It was my childhood treat to go there and I even enjoyed going up in my 20’s. Mum used to go there to the place club as a young woman and me and my partner went there all the time clubbing when we first got together in our younger days. It’s all gone now and very little of the Hanley I fell in love with as a child remains. The place needs a total overall and all the best bits bringing out to make us all proud again.

Superb story about the chap making the film 'Baskeyfield VC'. It's not often I'm that impressed but that story made me grin like a Cheshire cat. I can remember fondly my time working at the New Vic and winding up Peter at a few production meetings.

John Baskeyfield was my Dad's Uncle and when the film was made we were all invited to the Premiere in Burslem and coincidentally my Mum's brothers were extras in the film being shot a lot.

@@davidpoole1531 Lonnie is a real gentleman, polite, friendly and very sociable. This documentary was a right good trek down memory lane and thanks for uploading! I liked the bit where a miner reminisced about working with men from different countries....."we all mixed as one happy family, Poles, Ukrainians, if the world was the same place as the pit for mixing with foreigners, it'd be a far better place".

@@Bulletguy07 You could say I am a friend of Lonnie's and even played in bands with him. I was always in his record shop and sat with him at Victoria Hall a few times over the decades.

Stoke On Trent, like everywhere else, is reaping the spoils of a Thatcher government. She destroyed unions, taking pits, potbanks and steelworks too. Hanley, Stoke, Burslem, Tunstall and so on have all become ghost towns. Britain was bought and sold a long time ago, and your government are nothing more than thieves and robbers.
