Haters gonna hate, as long as you are not claiming that you served when you didn't or displaying medals as ones you have earned but have not, you're good. As you said its a bit of a grey area, it is funny how most people who don't like civilians wearing camo did not serve lol. The bottom line is be respectful and mindful when wearing camo, especially domestic US camo. Personally, I refrain from matching camo while wearing it casually, for example If Im wearing ACU UCP pants I wont wear an ACU UCP shirt. I personally don't like wearing USMC MCCUU marpat shirts or US army OCP tops, since the EGA is plastered everywhere on the USMC MCCUU and the US army scorpion OCP is still current issue. I do however, don't care if Im matching camo when it comes to really outdated patterns like Woodland and DBDU and even DCU, especially when its cold or if Im hiking. If I am hiking or doing anything outdoors I don't care about not matching because Im obviously not going to be pan handling change from a passerby hiker lol If you are walking around town be tasteful with wearing camo, if you are mostly alone and in the outdoors do whatever you like. All and all, using common sense and not being an idiot will help you not be accused of stolen valor.

Stolen Valor is when you claim something you are not to collect benefits. So wearing a uniform and getting charity or given money is stolen valor.
