WELCOME to Hopwood Hall Estate (AKA "Downton Shabby") in Middleton, England.
This channel follows the unexpected adventures of American Hopwood DePree who, whilst living in Los Angeles, traced his family tree online, and discovered his abandoned 60-room ancestral home "Hopwood Hall Estate" that dates back to 1426! Hopwood was informed that if he didn't do something very soon to save the Hall, it would be lost forever. So he packed his bags and left LA to take on the madcap challenge of his life with a passionate team of supporters and community volunteers, in England.
We share the ups & downs, failures & triumphs of this group effort DIY rescue emergency: learning new skills, discovering house & garden secrets and seeking the inspirations that will be needed to get this Estate back onto her feet once again!
Thank you to all our Patreons, Friends and Supporters who have decided to come along on the ride with us as we transform this irreplaceable British treasure back to her original grandeur! It may take us some time, but we embrace it, as the fun is in the process!! We hope you agree and that you will gain as much from watching the journey as we are experiencing it - and do feel free to contact us via the comments section below.

I'm stuck at home with the dreaded man flu so I got the chance to binge watch all of the older videos. Wow what a beautiful project done with a lovely team and charming host. I kept wanting to hear about the mysterious glass house that used to hide the less attractive servants wing. Obviously at this stage you wouldn't build something new with so much work needed on the existing structure. But is there a dream in years to come to reinstate the conservatory? Bravo guys!

❤ It's actually quite wonderful that the carvings (and other elements) are being recreated and renewed by the community. It will add to the heart, story and legacy of the building to see it done this way. There's something grandiose about a building that is a work of art funded in the past by wealth and pedigree. However, there's something even more positive and beautiful about that work of art being cared for and rebuilt by people who are there as community 😊

This is what blows my mind on such amazing historical buildings, the architecture, inside and out, the size and scale on how the flow, the artistic minds who designed so many things from the chimney design, the window designs, each room and the designs for singular purposes, library, bedrooms, dining rooms, halls so on so forth and how the craftsmens such fine and remarkable skills made delightful fixtures, fittings and features for ceilings and floors, walls and fireplaces, furniture and soft furnishings, the designs on the gardens and lands to buildings like this. People just pass by, glance and admire what they may briefly see, peice by piece, bit by bit. The smallest of details are the most important like these the intricate woodcraft pieces, make up the bigger most stunning impressive finishes. Truly remarkable. The dedication your giving this fantastic building and the step by step videos you show to regain and get it back to its original glory, then will those who have watched your videos truly appreciate what it takes to have such a historical building then and more so now. Wonderful ❤

My Uncle, whom passed away many years ago, tried to find places that he could take his advanced students. He was a professor of architecture here in the states. Maybe you can find some apprentice students at some college that might be able to help you find out more info on the carvings and on other artifacts around the mansion. And maybe be able to help recreate some items. Hey I think you did darn good for a first time carving. Great work!!!!! I would love to come help, but it is above my pay grade. Hopwood, does the house, or your ancestors, have a connection to the Tudor family? One of the flowers you showed looked like, or similar to, a Tudor rose. Inspiring. Coventry Cathedral was refurbished on 70's and 80's, and some of the new carvings are unapologetically modern and the result of design competitions. After all, history isn't static. Perhaps a panel of some people chasing pigeons?

I really like this suggestion, and especially with respect to furnishings and art. Some rooms could include contemporary art on the rough brick walls for example. I already donated an art piece to Hopwood Hall from 1493; perhaps Andy Warhol Campbell's Soup 1985 or similar next? What say Hopwood? Richard
@BryanMecklenburg

Wow, you are so fortunate to have found Saena and gain new skills through her training. I am guessing most of the wood used in Hopwood Hall was originally taken from the adjacent property. Did the Hopwood family sometimes use exotic woods for the carvings? Are you able to figure out what kind of wood was used in the original carvings so you can reproduce them accurately? - Bryan from Hudsonville.
@HopwoodXIV
@HopwoodXIV 10 месяцев назад
Thanks Bryan- yes many are oak which is why they have survived through the centuries so well. The surrounding Hopwood Woods has many acres of woodlands so someday it might be interesting to get back to utilizing fallen trees from there
